  1. I'm just confused about one thing here. I may have completely misunderstood how it works but I was under the impression that if you created a cache listing but did NOT click on the 'submit for review' button, then the reviewer would not see it. If so, how can you then create a cache listing 'just to hold the location'?

  2. Although I'm still planning on a specialist GPSr purchase, I own an iPhone 3GS and I recently bought a battery pack (that doubles as a case for the phone) and to be honest I'm nearly getting a full day's caching out of it using the official app sparingly! Bought from Amazon for £18.99 it's a pretty good stopgap for someone like me on a bit of a budget. It actually charges the phone battery from empty twice over from one charge. I am still looking forward to the day that my Oregon 450t comes through the front door though...

  3. Here's my tuppence...

I've recently placed a series of caches 5 miles south of Norwich and they are getting some nice feedback. It's lovely to read what others have said about finding your caches - in many ways I look forward to reading the comments more than finding caches myself. I've recently had some blank logs. I have read the full thread and whilst I realise that there maybe people who cannot type a log (as mentioned above) and that we all play the game in different ways etc, the simple and unavoidable fact is that if you've gone to the trouble of hiding a cache (or series of them) then its simply rudeness not to comment and 'share your experience online' The people who didn't bother to write anything did however, bother to take photo spoilers of some of my caches, even though it says in the cache description 'Due to the nature of this cache please DO NOT upload images of the container'. I've checked their profile and it appears that they are very new cachers. I've emailed them to explain their mistake, and mentioned about the general etiquette of writing comments on logs. My personal opinion is that if you can't be bothered to comment on your experience then don't bother going to log your find at all...

  4. Well thank you everyone for this lively and interesting discussion after my original post. I'm almost sure that I'll be buying an Oregon 450t when I've saved up enough pennies...

robnrshells I'll be asking for your help if I get stuck with TT's maps. Hope that's OK...

  5. Welcome!

It should be pretty obvious as it will have a 6 letter/digit tracking code on it that you will need to type in as proof that you have found it.

If you picked it up from the cache where it actually said it was, then just use the 'retrieved from' type log when you log it

Most Travel Bugs have a metal 'dog tag' and are likely to be attached to the item with a chain. Geocoins just have the code etched into them or embossed on them.

It is exciting when you find your first one. Just don't be afraid to log it so the owner knows where it is...

    Good luck!

  6. I've been looking at dedicated GPS devices to buy over the last few months. There doesn't seem to be a 'classic' unit that most cachers use. I've read review after review after review. I've looked at follow the arrow, reviews on GC.com, watched video reviews on you tube and been into stores and held some of the machines in my hand. I still haven't a clue what to do. My list of 'must have' features...

    1. Great battery life

    2. Good quality gps signal - even under trees etc.

    3. Paperless caching (need to see logs, cache descriptions, hints etc)

    4. Ability to easily add maps (like talky toaster's for example)

    5. Extra storage options via SD card etc

    6. Good screen that is viewable in sunlight.

    7. Robust unit that could stand a few drops if I got clumsy

    8. No more than £300

    9. erm... have I forgotten anything?

I know there are units out there that do all this stuff, but it seems there's no 'must have' unit that everyone agrees on. Satmap10, Garmin Oregon, Dakota or GPSMap62, Magellan Explorist GC are near the top of my list. Will I be happy with any or all of them??

It's SO hard to know which one to plump for. I don't want to spend £300 on the unit that's not quite right!

    Any advice warmly appreciated...

  7. I updated my profile (on My Geocaching Profile.com) this evening after finding 23 caches today. For some weird reason, on the year calendar it has logged them as 8 today (30th April) and 15 on 1st May. It's not even May for over an hour! I can kind of understand all 23 being put on the wrong day but why has it split them into 2 groups of caches? On my normal profile it shows 23 finds today which is correct...

    Any insight appreciated...

  8. I recently completed the 'Fossil' series so I know exactly what you mean... But sometimes, just sometimes, people may have very good excuses for not logging in for a long time. Sorry to darken the tone, but life is short, people get ill and may not be able to come back. But of course this would be a rare occurrence and probably unlikely. I can't imagine not logging in for a single day, never mind months or years, but maybe, just maybe... just my tuppence on the issue...

  9. I'm in the process of setting up a puzzle cache but it is not yet ready for publication so I have NOT enabled the listing yet. However I typed a note to the reviewer in the bottom box and this appears to have 'gone through' the system as I've received an email saying I've posted a reviewer note. So now will the reviewer will get this note but not see the listing? I'm still not ready to publish. Every other time I've made caches I've not needed to post reviewer notes. Help much appreciated...

  10. So I've found over 60 geocaches now and I'm nearly ready to place my first cache. I've deliberately waited so I gained plenty of experience of good hides with different styles of containers etc. so that hopefully my first cache won't be a complete duffer! I realise that my hides will probably improve over time with yet more experience of finding and hiding them. So I have just one question to check the procedure...

I take it that I place the cache and then submit it online? The reason I ask is that most caches I've seen have the GC code written at the top of the log. If you place the cache and then do the online form filling, how do you know what that code is? Do CO's come back and write it on? I'll probably be hiding the cache in the next 10 days or so... Any advice appreciated...

  11. I was just looking on rather enviously at some user profiles stat pages that seem to be all singing, all dancing with maps, pie charts, detailed information on finds, FTF's, and loads of other stuff.

I was wondering if some kind soul could tell me if this is a simple job to do or would it take someone with plenty of PC knowledge etc.? Also there appear to different ways of doing it too or am I mistaken with that theory?

I'm a premium member with I'd say average PC skills and knowledge but I'd love to make my profile statistics more interesting...

  12. Hi, I discoverd all this afew days ago by complete accident, been lurking, having a read, trying to understand all the findables, trackables and everything else...bit confusing LOL...but with a little "nudge" from my 11 yr old who is finding all this a bit exciting, I registered to find out a bit more as I searched my local area and there are tons of them hidden within 6 miles radius of our house, and some specifically for children....

Hopfully with a it more "knowhow" we will be posting our 1st find soon....wish us luck

Hello - I'm also a newbie from Norfolk. Been caching for just a few weeks and loving every minute. Its fantastic isn't it? My 8 year old daughter loves it too!
