  1. Amen to that! I didn't know anything about GPS units when I got into caching so I bought a 60cs just to be certain it had everything I needed. At first I thought it was way overkill for caching. I bought City Select for myself for Christmas thinking it would just be an interesting novelty--and now, as you say, "I can't live without it." Definately a must for paperless (or paper reduced) caching.
  2. I think dipping is perfectly legit as long as the bug actually visited the cache. I took a bug to Vegas from Minneapolis and launched it there. I didn't even think of dipping it here first. The bug traveled 1300 miles ATCF that it will never get credit for (<--hopping on one foot and kicking with the other). Here's another sad tale. I held a bug for a while and wanted to get it moving, so I picked out a cache I thought looked good and found it. When I saw the cache I thought it was ripe for a muggling. It was in an area that was a magnet for kids and ill concealed. I looked at the log book and it had been there a while, plus I was not going to be able to gc for a while, so I thought it would be OK. I put it on top of the log so someone would see it and hopefully move it quickly. I checked the log on gc.com about a month later and sure enough the cache had been muggled and the bug was gone. Why, oh why didn't I just dip it there so the owner could see some movement but I could still have held onto it until I found a better spot?
  3. Since GSAK uses the GPS Babel engine, could this also be accomplished with GSAK?
  4. How do you open GPX files in Google Earth? I can't see that option anywhere, and couldn't find it in the GE help. Do you need a subscriber version? I'm using the free one. Thanks.
  5. The bad news is that the catalog numbers and shipping dimensions are different The good news is that you can return it to any Target store, even if you ordered it online.
  6. What's the safest way to take your GPSr through airport security? Will bag scanners destroy data in either checked luggage or carry-ons? Is it best to carry on the GPS units and have them out for the security officers inspect them manually, like laptops? Thanks in advance.
  7. I placed my first bug on 9/11/2005. Someone picked it up two days later and, well, that's pretty much the story so far. I hope its not the end of the story.
  8. Thank you so much! I can't tell you how long I tried to figure that out, and it was so obvious! Closing thread...
  9. I uploaded a couple images for my TB. I set the default image for one of them when uploading. It appears in the TB page. So far, so good... But what if I want to change the default image to another one that is already uploaded? Is it possible to do this without uploading the image again? Thanks in advance.
  10. This would be the ideal solution. There would be no need to have a warning message and no one could accidently blow through it.
  11. My apologies. I didn't realize that the system was not automatically determining cache ownership. The same message comes up regardless of whether you own the cache or not. I like it. I suggest the following mods: You are submitting a note that this listing should be archived. Your request will be sent to a site reviewer, who will make a decision whether or not the listing will be archived. If you are the owner of this listing you should select "archive listing" on its web page to archive the cache immediately. Are you sure you want to submit a note to the reviewer? [submit] [Cancel]
  12. Thanks Jeremy. It seems to be working. Great new feature!
  13. What would you suggest as a better message? "You are submitting a note that a listing you own should be archived. You should select archive listing on the web page instead. Are you sure you want to proceed with this note?" [Yes] [No] Let me explain: "You are submitting a note that a listing you own should be archived." (The original message says "if you are the owner", but the message was displayed because the poster was determined to be the owner. There is no "if".) "You should select archive listing on the web page instead." (This tells the poster that the better choice is on the web page, not in the posting menu. It also tells them the specific button to look for.) "Are you sure you want to proceed with this note? [Yes] [No]" (This asks the poster to respond to a specific Yes/No question while reinforcing that proceeding is probably not the right choice. Separating it from the informative text further clarifies the question.)
  14. What would you suggest as a better message? That depends on the other choices. I know that one of the choices is "Yes". I don't know the others. "No"? "Cancel"? I guess I could try this with my own cache to find out but I'm afraid I'd screw something up. If someone could post a screen cap of the warning or describe the response choices I would be happy to make a suggestion or two.
  15. I would guess the biggest reason someone would blow through this warning is because the message is ambiguous. What am I being asked to confirm? Confirm that I am the owner or confirm that I want to proceed with the Needs Archived?
  16. I am having this same problem. I enter a cache I own in order to put it up for adoption and I get the message "You have not been asked to adopt that cache" I suspect that when the adoption acceptance function was fixed, the adopt offer function got broken. Adoptions that were already in the queue went through, making it appear that the adoption offer was working.
  17. Just ask the agreeable cache owner to go to that URL. sept1c_tank and myself tried that and entered our own caches as an experiment to see what forms appear when someone puts a cache up for adoption. We both got the same message--"You have not been asked to adopt that cache". Is this a bug in the site?
  18. Ok that works if someone has requested that I take over a cache, but how does the cache owner put the site up for adoption? As an experiment I entered a cache that I own and still got the message: "You have not been asked to adopt that cache'.
  19. How do I adopt someone's caches when the original owner agrees to the exchange? Most of the adoption information I've found in the forums deals with abandoned caches and unresponsive owners. Thanks in advance.
  20. Not a bad idea. I think this is the only place I've seen extensive paperless chat. I've used the info here to go paperless myself. Today was *my* first full day. I intentionally went to an unfamiliar area, checked the GPS for the nearest cache, and fired up Cachemate on the Palm Vx. Worked pretty well, but now I think I'll have to get MapSource because I didn't have all the Mapquest printouts--did a lot of driving in circles (you might call it the "automotive bee dance"). I appreciate all the input here from those experienced with the paperless chase. I couldn't have done it without you.
  21. Wouldn't do it, that's an older model PocketPC, probably running an older version of the OS. I have a PPC and love it, but if I were you I'd keep the Palm and go with CacheMate. That or find a newer PocketPC to purchase. Turns out you were right. It was not a 3855 but a 3835 and it was running Windows Mobile v3 copyright 2001. I passed and got a Palm Vx from Ebay. Thanks.
