  1. Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!
  2. I don't know of any in that price range with an electronic compass. When I use my Venture CX I never miss the compass.
  3. I would recommend the eTrex Venture (the current model, not the one coming out this fall.) It costs more than the basic yellow etrex, but supports mapping (if you decide to go that way) and has MUCH better reception and accuracy. In short, you won't outgrow it as fast, and maybe never.
  4. I have used a 60Csx and eTrex Venture side by side. One of the biggest differences I've noticed is that the 60CSx seems to "settle down" faster after being in a moving car or on a bicycle. If the cache is near the stopping area the person holding the 60Csx will almost always zero in on it first. I had an opportunity to test the 60CSx in extreme canyon conditions in Zion National Park recently. My track logs show that although it will hold a lock in Icebox Canyon or parts of The Narrows, performance is noticeably affected. The track logs wandered all over the place as the sky slice narrowed. The eTrex (and a 60CS) could not maintain a lock in the deep canyons.
  5. You can't delete custom POIs individually, you can only delete the entire custom POI file. You can, however, break up the POI's inot multiple files on the GPS. Do a search for "Silly Garmin POI tricks". Use the quotes when searching.
  6. I can see where wormhole travel would be much quicker than normal. I think it was explained fairly clearly. Go ahead and take the plunge.
  7. I found a solution. I would close this topic if I knew how. Thanks.
  8. I was geocaching in the southern Utah area recently and retrieved a travel bug whose goal was to go to Salt Lake City. I was back in Minneapolis with it before I realized its goal. If anyone is headed that way please PM me and we can arrange a bug drop. Thanks.
  9. Was it left in a hot car or somewhere else where it was exposed to heat? I don't know about the eTrex series but the 60 series had an issue at one time regarding a plastic piece under the power button that could melt. If your unit is not working under battery power or USB then I suspect a bad power switch.
  10. As I understand it, the hierarchy is hard coded and not user configurable. In map setup, look at the order of the maps in the list where you select/deselect them. that's the order they display.
  11. I don't have my 60CSx in front of me so I can't give exact steps, but yes, when you save the route it will show up in the list of available routes. It is all covered in the manual.
  12. Typically people create routes in Garmin Mapsource and upload them to the GPSr. You can also create a route on the GPSr by first creating (or uploading) waypoints, then go to Setup>Routes and select which waypoints to add to a route. I don't know about Trail Runner but you can use a third party application (I think its called SendMap?) to send mapping info to the GPSr, but I have never used it and don't know it it supports routes.
  13. ...and yes, geocaching is just a stupid game. Get over it.
  14. ...and they are not buried, and they are not electronic beacons. That's right, they don't broadcast anything, They just sit there. And, no, the satellites don't know where I am and they can't tell anybody.
  15. Maybe you can give me a hint? I tried it with a route and a track and it is not working. Hint: Page 36 of the manual.
  16. The most it could cost you to find out is about $180.00.
  17. All motors get destroyed in the long run. The question is not only how long but how fun is the run. We now return you to your regulary scheduled topic...
  18. You can use the "checkbox" column. First deselect all check boxes, then check the ones you want. Filter by "checkbox selected".
  19. I have had problems transferring when I have the power saving settings on the PC set to power down the HD or put the system in standby after 30 mins or so. The computer doesn't seem to recognize that the computer is doing something when it is transferring map sets. I set to power settings to shut down after 5 hours. I have to remember to set them back after the transfer.
  20. You also have to tell GSAK "who you are". The best way to do this is by owner ID number. The instructions are on the GSAK.net forums and in the GSAK help.
  21. One other possibility is that you need to have the street maps enabled in the unit. Go to map page >> Menu >> Setup map >> navigate to the little "i" icon at the top >> Menu >> Show City Navigator maps. If the menu choice only says "Hide City Navigator maps" then don't do anything, you're good to go. Also be aware that Garmin topo maps do not contain any street routing data. You need street mapping such as City Navigator, City Select, etc.
  22. I believe the Legend ships with a 32 mb card so that wouldn't be quite enough. If it is a 64mb card it would work. most people upgrade the microSD sooner rather than later. 1gb cards are $15-20 and 2gb cards are around $30-40. Amazon.com is a good place to start.
  23. The Garmites seem to be more vocal here than the Magellites. The Delormites are fairly new because the PN-20 just came out. I have a Venture Cx (Same as Legend CX but ships without cable and microSD) and 60Csx and I don't see a lot of real world difference as far as accuracy goes. The 60CSx is a easier to use when affixed to a vehicle because it has more dedicated buttons and they are right on the front of the unit. The 60CSx also acquires faster and claims to hold a lock better in tree cover (although accuracy is decreased as it would be with any unit.) For comparisons between 60 series and Delorme, try here.
  24. Number 8 should be, "Don't mark a waypoint for your return route at the fork in the trail, mark it 100 feet up the trail you want to return on. Otherwise, your waypoint is only telling you you're at a fork in the trail."
