  1. I'm considering a new GPS for hiking/caching that's more rugged and water resistant than my eMap. The Sportrak Pro sounds interesting. Has anyone had occation to "test" it's durability? Also, the Magellan page talks about a "North finder" feature that tells direction while standing still, but doesn't go so far as to admit to a digital compass..what's up with that? ApK
  2. Paranoia. By the way...unless the container was clear AND EMPTY, you still couldn't know for sure what was in it...and since we tend to HIDE the containers, how could you be sure the sticks and bark that cover it aren't booby trapped. Oh...I heard about a gang that is breaking into people's houses, and booby trapping the doors, so you might want to get clear doors for your house. Really, I read that somewhere. I wrote it down, then I read it. (props to Howie Mandel) quote:Originally posted by MrPAINT: Hey all, I'm very new to this hobby and havent went on a stash hunt as of yet. Me and a friend is getting into this(GPS has already been ordered hehe). I have one question to ask, its about Opening the stash thats in like a non see-through container. With the loonys in this world it seems to me this could be asking for a Stash Pipe Bomb type device. I know, sounds crazy, but out in the woods somewhere and you have people rushing to find and open a "stash of goodies" people would open just about anything after traveling and searching for the "prize". Has there been any problems along this line(pipe bombs? Snakes? anything else bad?)? I know this is a young hobby. I think i read its 6 months old. But I think we need safety rules to prevent this type nightmare from happening.......Say like only See-Through containers as a idea. maybe this is just talk about something that ill never happen. I just want others veiws on this. MrPAINT
  3. The COM port number is totally determined by the adapter's driver, not the physical USB port it's plugged into. On every driver I've seen, you can go to it's properties in device manager and set the port number you want it to use. LilDevil, have you been able to use Garmin's Updater software (the firmware flasher, not MapSource) to work using your adapter? quote:Originally posted by LilDevil: > tell me how I can determine what COM ports my USB's use? The only way I know of is to actually try them all. (The following instructions are for Windows XP. Other Windows versions should be similar. YMMV) 1. Right-click on My Computer and select Manage. 2. Click on Device Manager. 3. Click on the '+' icon next to Ports (COM & LPT). 4. Plug in the adapter and observe which port appears. 5. Unplug the adapter. 6. Repeat steps 4 & 5 for all USB ports. I hope this works for you. Lil Devil http://www.trailbikesportsmen.org/images/lildevil.gif

  5. $83 for usb-serial adapter is absurd. Keep shopping. Or try: http://pfranc.com/usb/usb.shtml and tell him ApK sent ya.... quote:Originally posted by zaarenoc: Thank you for the prompt answer I think I have found an adaptor from Staples that will suffice. $83.00 for a little adaptor is expensive though. 7. It means that PayPal won't even have the little bit of competition from Billpoint (which eBay is shutting down) so there will be even less encouragement to keep customer service high and fees low. This will not be good for users in the long run. quote:Originally posted by jbwcpa: Ebay announced this morning that they will be acquiring Paypal. What does this mean exactly? I'm not sure but here is ebay's explanation. http://pages.ebay.com/community/news/acquire.html
  8. I think it's the SPIII that my Bro-in-Law got for my sister, who get's lost in her own driveway. She likes it, and she's not technical at all. On her's you can download different voices for the directions...she's chosen to "get told what to do by a prissy British woman" quote:Originally posted by Capt Prozac: Any input on a Garmin color street pilot? This unit will strictly be used for driving in Europe (I have the European Mapsource CD) and will NOT be used for geocaching. Does anyone have thoughts on this? If I purchase one, it will be used by my wife to help her navigate on roads in our auto. She suddenly expressed a desire for a GPS after watching me easily navigate with my Etrex Legend.
  9. I always get "too many results" when I try to use the "Topics you've posted to with new responses." I don't know how to narrow...other options like "Since yesterday" don't have any effect. ApK

  12. Who's keeping score? I wasn't aware of a competition. BTW, LilDevil, I see you only have 11 posts on the forums...I'm beating you! quote:Originally posted by LilDevil: [ Is it just me, or is logging a "find" on ones own cache a bit unethical? Seems like a sneaky way to inflate ones score.

I couldn't resist. I had made a Democrat comment to Alan in another thread. I'll stop now.
  16. I'm with Pneumatic on this. I'm glad you logged your difficulties with the snakes...keknj will be sure to avoid this one... but as for tripping and hitting your head while walking through brush...I sympathize...but, ummm...Be aware of your surroundings, watch your step and know your abilites. Don't go anywhere you don't feel comfortable going, even if a thousand people went before you without incidient. For same reason I don't don't blindly follow my insane friends while skiing. ApK quote:Originally posted by Pneumatic: Not living in the area, I can't comment from personal experience, but having looked at both cache pages, it doesn't look like they're placed in intentially or inheirently dangerous places. In the case of the Greenway cache, None of the other finders had complained about the snakes nearby, so it's likely that they're a new development. The cache owner should be informed, but in previous logs the most dangerous wildlife mentioned is slightly annoyed geese. Your log should be enough to put future visitors on their guard. In the case of NJ Palisades, you took a fall, but no others have mentioned difficult or tricky terrain. Perhaps you picked a more difficult approach than those other people, but a big part of this sport is figuring out the best approach. I hope you don't get turned off the game because of these mishaps. Think of them as learning experiences. You know to watch you footing, and both you and your son (hopefully) now know to keep well away from snakes, and to use sticks to poke into dark crevises. -- Mitch

  21. quote:Originally posted by Dekaner:(Anyone else want a stone to throw?) Sure, I'll take a shot: The cache is a legitimate virtual cache of relativly limited interest area. It may be more of interest as a piece of real estate in B'ham, regardless of the Christi element, then others realize, and I think the cache is as appropriate to the sport as any other virtual cache that I have no interest in, and the only person who should have a valid concern over this cache is Christi herself. ( I know I would.) As for the other point, I understand the "This cache should be archived" option is to alert the managment of problems, not a popularity contest or an outlet for personal opinions. All out of stones.
