  1. No, what it means is that you need to worry less about getting your personal and off-topic viewpoint made in this forum and address the topic, which by the way has been discussed more times than I can count. Let me catch you up. Trade even, Trade up, or don't trade at all. What I said IS on topic. Nothing personal intended, but I think it's quite in-disputable that you are being repetitive. I have stated a valid reason for trashing that stuff out. I invite you to do the same, rather than repeating an unsupported statement. I'll be the repetitive one if you want. This stuff is offensive. Tracts are a direct statement that I am not only going to burn in hell, but that I am worthy of such fate due to my vileness. It's not at all unreasonable to feel offended by that. My argument is that this stuff is trash, not a trade item. I consider "nothing" to be an even trade for trash. PS: It doesn't matter how often it's been discussed before. The OP asked about it. It hasn't been discussed by me, and I have a right to express my on-topic and non-personal views.
  2. I noticed that too. So to keep the spirit of geocaching alive.... Trade even, Trade up, or don't trade at all. What I said is directly relevant to the topic. It's in support of my argument for trashing out those items. You're getting a bit repetitive Mr. Deuce.
  3. If I find food, porn, fireworks or religious tracts in a cache, I'll trash it out. It's not a trade item. It's trash.
  4. Before you can convince me that I need to be saved in the first place, you need to convince me that I am a bad person. I don't believe I'm a bad person. And I'm offended by those tracts, because they are DIRECTLY telling me that I am a bad person. Why else would I need to be saved? SOME christians go around telling us we're evil, we have "sinned" and not only will we burn in hell for eternity, but we fully deserve it because we are such bad creatures... And then they get offended if I disagree? Don't they ever get sick of running around being offended all the time? When is it my turn?
  5. Hey, where's that "Good secluded places in the woods to bring strange women" waymark category?
  6. How is it that what I said gets interpreted this way? I never meant to suggest that we need more R rated caches. I meant only to suggest that if we had a rating system, then you could easily ignore those that you don't want your kids to see. It is obvious that people are pushing the limits. In addition to this thread's subject, there are caches with murder themes which have pictures of (simulated) corpses as "clues" to the "mystery". That might be considered an R rated cache. I agree that caching should be family friendly. So why not be able to eliminate those caches which are "pushing the limits" from your searches so you can insulate your kids from them? My apologies if I misinterpreted what you or anyone else was suggesting. I read through this thread exactly once, and quickly, and had a lot of things I wanted to address.... so that's what I did, without going back and rereading anything or quoting anyone. I understand your suggestion now, but I think it would cause more harm (encouraging R rated caches) than good. All listed caches should be family friendly. If you have a problem with simulated corpses on a cache listing, you should contact GC.com - just like I did for this cache. No response yet, btw. To be clear, you are not the only one who took my original comments that way. I'm not accusing you of mis-interpreting. Rather, I apparently should have been more clear in my first comments. As for the corpse, I don't have a problem with that at all. But I can see how some people might. I'd hate to see it archived for that reason, but I also sympathize with folks who may not want their kids exposed to corpses (or F.A.G.s).

  8. Whenever I see these threads on batteries, I'm happy to tout the joys of NIMH rechargables. I get great performance with them in my 60CSX. Even if you don't care about the environment, they're simply the cheapest way to go. Just be sure to set your GPSR to use them in the settings, or else it will falsely report "low battery" too early. Also, not all NIMH batteries are created equal. Get the highest mah rating you can. I've had good results with the lower 1800mah batteries, but much better results with 2500mah bats. This is currently the cheapest way to go by far. A charger with 4 batteries is only about $15 if you shop around. You can always have the second set in the charger and you never have to worry about running out of power.
  9. I just download and/or create waypoints in the mapsource software. You should have that if you're using an Etrex. Then just save it as a gpx file and open it in google earth. The latest mapsource version also has a "view in google earth" menu item that will automatically open google earth and load up your selection. Works great, but the icons it uses for waypoints are stupid, so I have to modify them afterward... ---------- What's really tricky is going the other way. If you want to make points in Google Earth, and then view them on your maps or load them into your GPS. Google earth won't save a GPX. (unless there is a new version that does...). So I save it as a kml file and convert with GPSBabble. But that's such a hassle! If it's only points and not paths and stuff, I have a custom program I wrote myself that will very easily convert kml to gpx with out the hassel of GPSBabbel. I just drag and drop the kml file onto my program's icon. and poof! a gpx appears on my desktop. I'm actually going to modify it soon, so I can just copy an object in Google earth and run my program. The program will convert it right there IN the clipboard so I can just paste it into mapsource... No messy files involved... Are you saying "I should have that if I'm using an Etrex"? Are you saying I should purchase it? or it came with the Etrex? This actually sounds like a real messy proposition.... Maybe I will just go back to a compass & a mess of Rand-McNalleys.. nawwww !!!!! Thanks much Frank The Mapsource software is a free download from garmin.com. It can be used as a waypoint manager without purchasing maps. But it's true intent is to manage any maps you may purchase in addition to the waypoints. Also n-route is a free download. It is used for live tracking with your gps connected to your laptop while driving. Again, the maps are the part you pay for.
  10. I think if someone wants to create a website that lists R rated caches, and even X rated caches, he is free to do so. Well, don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to promote porn caches. I'm just saying that if there is disagreement over what's appropriate, maybe a database field in the listings could be used to give people a heads up so they can choose what they want to hunt based on that. The same way we can say, "if you don't like micros/puzzles/etc... then don't hunt them", we could also say, "if you don't like G rated/R rated caches, don' hunt them." Then you could easily filter out the ones you don't want to take your kids out looking for, and you'd know in advance what you were getting yourself into.
  11. nope. That's funny, look at the tag line you use on your posts "Enjoy the SPORT, not the brand name" I had to call it something. How about: "enjoy the generic and controversially labeled activity, not the brand name." ??
  12. Heh Heh... I can't believe I'm wasting my time on this thread... But here goes. I would put it hierarchically. Sports are games, and games in turn are hobbies. Hobby: something you do for fun: a pastime. Game: a hobby that contains a competitive component. Sport: a Game which contains an athletic/physically demanding component. Of course Deer Hunters and such call their activity a sport, when it doen't usually involve competition against other hunters... Go figure. PS: it's "pastime", not "past time"
  13. Why not? As long as there were ways to avoid having your kids exposed to them, that is. It could just be a mystery cache with a violent or scarey theme.
  14. What if there were a voluntary rating system where the cache owner could rate the cache similar to movie ratings. ie: G, PG13, R. Then you could use that field in your pocket queries, or even restrict your membership so that if your kids sign on they'll never see the caches rated higher than you choose. If other cachers find a cache which does not fit the rating it was given by the owner, then they would report it. Everyone would argue about it, and eventually standards would emerge for what kind of cache or cache page constituted what rating. Any thoughts?
  15. I'm not sure who you were talking to. If you're talking to me then you're obviously taking this thread way to seriously.... Hey! Go find someone else to insult you, it was me that he insulted. Dang! Well, I'll keep looking. There must be an insulting person around here somewhere. Headybrew, if you need an insult, here goes: You are.... an evil, mean, pusillanimous polecat and a hooligan and carpebagger to boot! That's better!!!!
