  1. With using TTN 5 on PPC you can add a 3rd party app called OS GPS Convertor that you can assign to one of your hardware buttons to launch when you need it. It works very well for me. It modifies or creates a TT Itinerary or POI file for you. It also works with Destinator, and Ozi Explorer. As far as entering caches to TTN, I prefer to use GSAK. It is easier than using straight gpsbabel in my opinion as I can more easily have control over my data via the GUI database filtering options as well as can enter thousands of waypoints into one .ov2 file. Using it this way I am also able to export many .ov2 files at times, depending on the organizational schema I use for breaking caches out. My normal approach is to export a caches.ov2 for all new caches and a found.ov2 for all previous finds, although I have on occasion during vacation trip planning and such created individual .ov2 files for multis, puzzles, earthcaches etc... Using it with fastest or shortest mode, Suscrofa is correct, it does not do much for you other than get you to parking or the closest roadway location to the cache. Although at times I have used it in Walking/Hiking Bicycle mode to get me closer, but it is not dependable. It works wonders in fastest mode though for cache runs or navigation from cache to cache. While on the subject, if you check the GSAK forums there are several macros available to help you massaging geodata, one that you may be interested in is the export to TT Itinerary from your current filter. I do not remember the TT Itinerary limit (48 or something odd like that) but you can create more than one and just swap as needed.
  2. I too would be interested in seeing this ported to a package that could be complied by *nix variants.
  3. if they are .jar files you need to insure that you have a java VM available to run them on the phone.
  4. We got our confirmation email this morning!! Can't wait...coins look great! Thanks
  5. From the last cache I tried to place in SC (Pee Dee Region) which we were planning on having my parents maintain as well as the few caches I have helped my parents with listing, there is a much harder set of listing guidelines in SC than here in PA. Well at least per working or trying to work with SC Reviewer. SC Reviewer seems to want abundance more information including the Name and a way to contact the land owner before he/she even considers listing the cache. I also remember something about a land owner database, but do not remember if SC Reviewer was the champion of that project or not, but between the more information wanted and the possibilty of having to submit information to this land owner database is more than likely some of the reasons you are seeing fewer new caches. Now to qualify; things may have gotten more lax as I nor have my parents tried to place a new cache in at least 5 months, which is another reason you probably see less caches... as people become disheartened they stop trying.
  6. Just got back from that area this weekend. Lived in the area for 15+ years, was very sad to hear about the proposed legislation. As I have heard it did die, but there is likeyhood of it poping back up due to the political instigator now residing in a new higher office. I unfortunately feel that SC has gotten the bad end of the stick, but it goes to show what a few uneducated people in power can do for something they are misinformed about. We have not cached in MB yet, although we have hit other areas of the state nearby. Depending on your route you may want to stop in Florence county and check out a few there. If you do any of the Team Tigerz or Mvillian caches are highly suggested. Also if it is still available Living Art is a virtual a bit further west of there and is hands down one of the most interesting virtuals we have been on. Mr. Fryer is more than happy to show and talk to you about his garden if available.
  7. it is a .ov2 file not a .gs. The .gs is the explorist format Doc, Interesting... I too use TomTom navigator 5 on my Dell Axim for quite a while, and have not seen any limitation such as this. I have over 8000 caches loaded in my TOMTOM on different maps. I create a single caches.ov2 and found.ov2 and populate those into my maps. TomTom has no issues seeing the 8000+ or the close to 900 finds all on one map. Can you give more details.... Could it be that you are seeing more of the radius limitation for goto's? Ie if I choose "navigate to" then choose "caches" (could be any name that you give the poi group) then I have a list of caches in a limited radius. Now if you click on the keyboard icon on the lower left you can search for caches outside that current radius by name.
  8. Yes, how about I had to ship my 600 back for repair which they told me to leave that battery in (it was a power issue). They shipped me a replacement unit with out a battery, took almost 3 months to get a battery. Was much faster to get the AAA battery clip from Tigergps and from cabelas.
  9. One very interesting variation of the lamp post hide is Wuthering Heights, a Vinny & Sue Team cache. If you think lamp posts can not be interesting / challenging then I suggest you that you consider giving one of these a try, as it definately is not your typical lamp post skirt hide. Infact after you complete one of these depending on how prepaired you are for it, then the skirt hide may be a blessing the next time your gps points to the lamp post
  10. I hear you loud and clear there... I quazi understand the reasoning behind why GC says (or the one that was speculated earlier in this thread) they want the info, but to be perfectly honest with you they have it all already. If all they were looking to do was verify the people asking for the TBs were the members requesting and that they could log in and log the bug then it would have been much easier and not as alarming, to the more paranoid user base, for GC to allow you to request a TB from the form, then it send your account's e-mail an automated url with specific user token that would redirect to a properly secured SSL site that uses the account password for authentication for you to verify your account information that is on hand versus having to duplicate data, or use more complex algorithms to grock and compare the data sets. Personally having worked for several ISPs and other net based companies over the past 12+ years something definitely smells like a new targeted mailing list being generated for someones use. I sincerely hope that is incorrect, and is just me being paranoid. As for the intent of these bugs/campaign, I highly commend GC for agreeing to allow and support them. I think this is an excellent type of awareness campaign that GC can support and retain it's light airy feel, while continuing to educate the user base. I hope more of these types of opportunities are available in the future, but that GC also learns from each and adapts its support model for these types of spin-offs to ease some of the concerns of the users in the future.
  11. Ok...it is an old style tag so i believe it is only numbers so no 0 vs O issues. Bug isn't activated, so no, the bug isn't shown as being dropped. I saw a log that mentioned dropping it and emailed that person a couple of days ago. I guess i will just wait a couple of weeks and then email GC for the activation code, unless, of course, i get a reply. I found it in I80/99 McBug Hotel Revisited .
  12. We grabbed a bug out of a cache and when i went to log it, it says it is unactivated. What should i do? I have emailed the cacher who placed it in the cache asking them if they released it or if they just moved it and i have yet to get a reply. Any suggestions? This has to belong to someone!!!
  13. Ouch that is alot of caches to keep up with in such a small radius and would produce quite a few files!
  14. Here is something a little different than what you have now, but works great for me. Instead of breaking the caches down by a hard radius, I break the files into number of caches and name it with database name -distance from start - distance to finish, limiting the files to 190 caches per. ex: PA-5.42 - 19.95.gs There are 3 files, the first file launches the next 2 in order. It is the file I set my macro button in the tool bar to call. The second file is to export to magellan sd format and the last exports the same caches to gpx files of the same name. It is then very easy for me to correlate the gpx file on the ppc to the file I have on my gps. If you want to change the number of caches per file adjust the range= to your liking, although if you use magellan 200 is the max for files with extra info. I got the idea after downloading and playing with the alpha sort macro on the gsak site forums. There is some good info over there also... Here are 3 files Distance_Sort -> used to launch magellan and gpx sort / export #Call the Magellan_Distance_Sort, and the GPX_DISTANCE_SORT ShowStatus msg="Please wait; creating eXplorist and GPX files sorted by distance" FileErase File="C:\Documents and Settings\$user\My Documents\My GPS\Geocaches\*.*" OnError=Continue MACRO File="C:\Program Files\GSAK\Macros\Magellan_Dist_Sort.txt" FileErase File="C:\Documents and Settings\$user\My Documents\My GPS\Geocaches\GPX\*.*" OnError=Continue MACRO File="C:\Program Files\GSAK\Macros\GPX_Dist_Sort.txt" Magellan_dist_sort -> break caches out in distance from center in 190 count files. ############################################# # # # Explorist Distance Sort and Export # # Based on # # Magellan Alphabetical Sort / Export # # # # # ############################################# ############################################# # Get PC User name and set Database # ############################################# Set $user = GetEnvV("USERNAME") $Database = $_CurrentDatabase ################################################################# #Check to see of folder exists if not then create and set # ################################################################# $BatFile = $_Install + "\Temp\temp.bat" $Folder = "C:\Documents and Settings\$user\My Documents\My GPS\Geocaches\$Database" If .not. Sharing A Pq

That was my take on it since all members of the board that DJ is speaking of are GC members as it is one of the "rules" for membership. Although the data was removed, it was only used to show another member that was struggling with the new user routes feature that a route they created actually returned data when a PQ was run, which they did not think did. I think the TOU needs some updating myself... Take these 2 points in example: • Licensee may install the Data or portions of the Data onto a global positioning system unit [“GPS”] for Licensee's own internal use. • Licensee may make only one (1) copy of the original Data for archival purposes unless the right to make additional copies is granted to Licensee in writing by Groundspeak. I infer from the first that you are only allowed to transfer it to a GPS unit, how about a pocket pc or palm device for paperless caching? It also specifies "a GPS unit", so does that mean we can not transfer it to multiple GPS units? Or better yet how about the middleware needed to convert the GPX data to data upload able to the unit? The second, I am sorry but I do believe that almost every user breaks this un-intentionally just using email clients and standard tools not to take into account their computing environment. For instance, in my abnormal case I get PQ's e-mailed to my gmail account. I have a rule there that moves them to a folder for me, and I download via pop3, so I have 1 copy on gmail's spindles, then after download at least 1 on the spindle of my workstation within outlook. I then import into GSAK for the ability to massage the data the way I want, now having at least a 3rd copy. As soon as I close GSAK it backs all that up for me, a 4th copy. Now when using GSAK, I commonly use the filters to copy subsets of data into new databases to play with in various ways, so there are even more copies. Then because I am a geek with a fair lab in home, and an enterprise style backup schema, I have multiple backups on my san spindles, which is also backed up to tape. Therefore I could have 30+ copies at any one time before transferring to multiple GPS units and pocket pc, which the pocket pc gets at least 2 copies in different file formats transferred to it. This is all un-intentional but per my take on the verbiage not allowed. So therefore it seems to me that this verbiage is there more so to stop people from explicitly taking mass data and sharing to tohe point of exploitation. I.e. injecting the data into a public database and creating a new interface for searches and .gpx compilation.
  16. If you do not include the extra notes when exporting you can have more than 200 per file, but the limit is currently 200 caches with notes per file. You can have multiple files you just have to choose which one is active. I also do not transfer from GSAK to Magellan GC Manger. In the export function of GSAK you can export to Magellan Explorist and SD card, and it will spit out your .gs file for you to transfer right over. with doing it that way I build a filter to limit my radius in gsak to get the amount of caches close to 200 then limit to 200 in the export. Have fun!
  17. I tend to agree, this is a bit out of hand. The e-*** auction said nothing about it being pre-order, and I do not remember the original thread saying it was pre-order, although I am not even sure if I saw the original thread since threads were removed. I am glad some of you were able to get replies from the seller, as I am still waiting which makes it worse on my end. I now have a really bad taste for this seller since I have been waiting for a reply for over a week. I do not have a problem with pre-sales, I have bought in on a few of them, although good seller to buyer communication is the key. I have heard back from each and every other coin seller on every pre-sell I have been in, with out me having to e-mail and ask.
  18. this may be a solution... http://www.geocoinstore.com/ You have to look at the community you are dealing with, we cachers on whole are a fairly honest group. Personally I would buy a certificate or bond myself; especially from those whom have minted coins previously.
  19. Not much of an adventure for us as of yet, but we have a coin that was dropped for us. We gave it a mission of traveling to us marking out caches to do on future trips. It has skipped many states in between, but looks as though it may be getting some more miles logged soon. Happy Caching!
  20. Okay guys, enough is enough… Yes we are fairly new cachers that have been constantly barraged by a few local cachers, for various nonsense related issues, which is becoming ridiculous! If we are misguided then the information we have received and is posted on this website has misguided us. As far as the claims that I cooked anything up or want to be some liaison for the parks is absurd! 1.) I was approached by officials while scouting out a hide for a new cache in South Park. I explained what I was doing and was given contact info for John Stibrik. I was told I needed to contact him to get permission to place the cache in the park. I contacted Mr. Stibrik, and was referred to Clarence Hopson, as Mr. Stibrik did not completely understand and all new activities need to be run through Mr. Hopson. 2.) I contacted Mr. Hopson and had a decent phone conversation with him explaining what I wanted to do. He mentioned he was meeting with another cacher for a CITO event in Settlers Cabin, and would like for me to send him an e-mail with any information that I had, and explaining what I would like to do in the park. I did so, and was contacted back by him for me to meet with Him and the naturalist in South Park for placement on my cache as they did not understand thinking it was an event also. I did so and was given permission to place the cache. 3.) I received the form in the mail about 2 weeks after the cache was placed. I immediately called and asked for an electronic version, which I e-mail to Keystone. I received this electronic version from Nicole Ruder in the Parks office. Plain and simple, I was not going to lie about what I was doing there nor do I feel I should ever have to lie about placing or finding a cache. If the Ground Speak stance on placing a cache has changed from what is posted here http://www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx to “it is best to fly under the radar” and “pleading ignorance when issues arise” as has been stated to me since, as well as posted in local forums, then that should be well stated, and posted big and bold on the Geocaching home page. If this is not the case and it is just the rule of thumb for this area, then there should be some type of automatic notification sent to all new members from this area stating that. Keystone… I will re-send you the information that I sent you previously with the contact numbers and form attached.
  21. If you still have any standards left we will take 3. Thanks
  22. What do you guys think about concert sites/venues as a category and/or civic centers as another? Oops sorry did not look upward....... archive this for later.
  23. I hate to say it but the Waymarking site is growing on me. I can see how it can be a benefit, useful, a pain, and is definatley going to evolve due to the abilities given the waymark / category owner(s). I definately think the rating ideas are great ideas, and would suggest deriving the code to further implement it into the marks category to include a single or double tiered warning system to the mark owner so they can try to resolve or archive the mark. This would better facilitate the community being able to police the db, but could also see it possibly being used errantly, thus allowing time for the owner to re-evaluate / act. I would also ask that we be able to sort marks in a category by our filter for the zip / coords, and clickable field columns to arrange in date orders. I know I can click the search button to the right, but this is creature comfort. If I can get them already listed from closest that is awesome, or can refine by clicking column headers. I realize this would entail format changing as dates would have to be moved to columns, but would be beneficial in sorting the data. One last request would be to increase the ttl of the pages. I like to use my browser's back button, and it sux to have to hit F5 so much. Oh and I like the php forums on a mainly asp.net based site Nice way to mix technology, and not 're-invent the wheel' with the forum. CT
  24. 4 years ANG, 46R and shot for the All Guard Marksmanship Team. I used to think I should have gone active, but left to be a geek. Now when I think that way I just go find an ammo container in the woods.
