  1. Anyone out there know how to perform a projection using the 62st? I tried on mine but the number of key-inputs was excessive (IMHO). What I did: Select a geocache Menu > Review Point Menu > Save as Waypoint OK Menu > Edit Waypoint Menu > Project Gotta be simpler way.... Please advise
  2. The Geocaching.com app assumes that you have an internet connection all the time. It was developed initially for the iPhone. I've been using the Geosphere app that does not require you to be on-line. The caches are saved internally and can be accessed without being on-line. You can get the app and details at: http://www.gbhometech.com/Geosphere/Home.html
  3. try Geosphere. Downloaded it to my wife's new iPod Touch and it works great. Their site has lots of useful info as well as tutorial videao: http://www.gbhometech.com/Geosphere/Home.html
  4. Just got an Ipod Touich for my caching wife. I downloaded Geosphere and after going to their web site things started to click. They have several tutorial videoas that go over the basics. Go to this site forthe info: http://www.gbhometech.com/Geosphere/Home.html
  5. You're very welcome. I use the 500 to get me to the general area and then switch to the 60CSx to the actual search. We also use printed maps of the area we're caching that day just to make sure that the "Oh, look there's one not too far from here" syndrome doesn't land us in Ohio (we're in NJ). Have a great holiday and New Year!
  6. After the update I changed the settings in GSAK to reflect 32 characters. Opened up a cache and no reboot. However, when viewing the description page there was no detail. In fact just the Go button was displayed. After changing the settings to 20 all was good. Anyone found the sweet-spot number? Thank you. I just checked and as you said while it doesn't re-boot there is no detail. I looked on GSAK and didn't find where to change the settings to 20. Could you please tell me how to do that. Thanks Dick Go to File - Export - GPX/LOC File... Waypoint Name: %Code Max characters: 20 Cache Description: %Smart=20 Make sure there is a checkmark in the: Also apply to cache name Hope that helps

  8. OK I just bought a NUVI 500. How do you get the blinking battery cover off????? I feel like a real dork but when I push the release button up nothing releases. Does it slide off? Pry off? Do I have to get my sledge hammer? Please anyone who has figured out this mystery please reply chemcache I had the same problem and I felt like a 10 thumbed moron.. tough to describe but you really have to push-slide on the battery release latch and at the same time pop the battery open. It took me a bit before I got used to it. Almost felt like there was a pressure seal keeping it closed
  9. Have you updated the USB drivers for your Garmin?
  10. I have the Nuvi 500 and 60CSx. Stick with the 60CSx if your primarily going to be geocaching. The Nuvi 500 is a great unit but its form-factor is not really conducive to caching. It's awkward as a hand-held and has no lanyard attachment. I use my Nuvi 500 for road navigating and to get me to the parking area. I then use the 60CSx for the actual cache hunt and hike.
  11. Mine appears to be OK. I can see the compass icon on the menu screen when I transition from Driving to Walking. I have: Nuvi 500 SW version 3.40 Audio Version 1.00 GPS SW Version 2.47b
  12. Make sure that when you plug the cable onto your Ex 500 that the cord runs down the length of the unit. If you've plugged it in with the cable coming out the top you will not get data transfer.... again..... cable needs to run down the unit.
  13. If you use GSAK to manage your cache list, there's a way to limit the character length allowing those caches to be accessed without having the Nuvi crash. Within GSAK, the cache list you want copied to the Nuvi should be listed Click on File -> Export Select GPX/LOC In "Waypoint Name" type: %Code Max characters: 20 Cache Description: %smart=20 With these settings I have had no issues with the Nuvi crashing. Hope this helps We have certainly experienced the long cache name/shut down issue. Can't wait until they fix that considering we don't print anything now that we use the 500. I have never tried the pocket query feature yet with the 500; will have to give it a try. Thanks. As for an earlier comment from another poster regarding why switch to the 60 instead of using the 500...the 500 is waaaaay to slow to update the compass. It has literally taken us minutes of walking before the compass updates direction or distance. We switch over to the old Magellan to make the find, but use the 500 for our paperless caching.
  14. Just tried to add a link to a cache but the geocheck.org site is down. Any cache pages using the link now display the dreaded red x in the box. Any one know what's going on?
  15. There's a download that allows for spoken directions. I used webupdater to get the text to speach capability
  16. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't believe, out of the box, the Explorist 100 supports external connection. In other words, there's no USB connectivity on that unit that allows for cable connection. All waypoints need tio be entered manually.
  17. Both units are essentially the same. The 500 is limited to the lower 48 while I believe the 550 covers all 50 states. ..don't forget Canada!!! Remember us we're that big lump of land over the US.. mostly snow covered, igloos & dogsleds My extreme apologies, NordicMan. I should have said North America....
  18. Both units are essentially the same. The 500 is limited to the lower 48 while I believe the 550 covers all 50 states. As far as hiking since they're physically the same my comments would apply to both: 1. There is no lanyard attachment so you'll need to carry the unit or have a protective pouch for hands free. 2. It's a rectangular form factor so holding it requires basically an open palm rather than wrapping your fingers around a traditional hand-held. 3. It's touch-screen so you'll need to be careful how you manipulate the unit when either taking it out or putting it back in a pouch/pocket so you don't inadvertently touch the screen 4. Screen brigtness is excellent but at higher levels will consume battery quickly. 5. It's not as accurate, I believe, as the 60CSx but will get you to your GZ and coupled with the integrated geocache applet allows you to have hints and descriptions. 6. The newest software updates now allow for spoken turn-by-turn. Not on hiking mode but a welcome "free" download. 7. Will prompt you to switch from hiking mode to driving mode if it senses you're moving faster than walking speed. 8. The Geocache applet will allow you to log your finds while in the field. When you get home you can then use the Field Notes function of GC.com and have those uploaded to the site for easy logging. There are more attributes but those are the basics. As long as you consider a good protective cover and understand it's not as ergonomic as a true handheld you'll be fine.
  19. I have had the Nuvi 500 since January and am thoroughly pleased with it. I don't know much on the Magellan units but simply based on their lack of customer support I can not recommend their units.
  20. The OP focused on the Nuvi 500. Not sure what the 200 can/can't do...
  21. I may be wrong but I don't believe the topo maps support autu-routing functionality....
  22. Page 39-40 of the manual. Reset: Hold on/off power button down for at least 10 seconds. Or remove then re-install battery. Clearing All User Data 1. Turn off 2. Press finger on lower right corner of touch-screen 3. While holding finger down on lower right corner of touch-screen, turn on Nuvi. Keep holding down your finger until message appears 4. Touch yes to clear all data.
  23. It's real and it's been reeived by more than one NJ-based cacher that I know of...
  24. FYI Received this the other day from a cacher outside of our area. I've hidden the name and his state. Not sure how you guys feel about this but it sorta waters down the caching experience. ---------------------- Hey fellow cacher, My name is (HIDDEN), and I really enjoy caching. I would love to find a cache in all 50 states, but I don't have the resources to travel the country, so I'm getting creative. I'm wondering if you'd like to team up for a day. Here's what I propose: You go find a cache nearby, take a picture or two, sign in for us both, and send me the pics, and GC numbers (if there are any tb's - bonus!!!) I'll do the same in (HIDDEN), and send you all the info. Then we can each log both finds, through our virtual caching partnership. I would really like to try this, so please let me know if you're interested, Thanks, (HIDDEN)
  25. Both macros are excellent; they differentiate by addressing different features. The Advanced requires a bit more customization. If you want the proximity alerts and caches to be grouped by type as well as some other features, then the Advanced may be to your liking.
