  1. Thanks Cracker7M, I didn't know how to get started!
  2. Is there some way (free of course) to convert a route into a 3-D model? I want to view elevation changes as well as my horizontal mapping. I use Mapsend Topo and Magellan Sprotrac Pro.
  3. I had the same problem and struggled for hours with it. I restarted my computer and everything has worked fine since then.
  4. I still use GeoClipping with my Palm IIIc. I choose this route because everything is free this way. Works for me!
  5. I think Xitron made the best points in a couple of posts. I would like to see the bickering end and the forums move on!
  6. When I installed mine, I had a choice of a full installation or partial that requires the CD each use (to save disc space). I would think it depended on which installation you chose as to whether you need the CD or not.
  7. I voted "No". But thanks Pan for your suggestions about this problem. I think it is a trivial problem and soon enough there will be something else that comes along, anyway. I feel that the bigger problem would be deleting posts and locking topics. As long as it's clean, family-oriented stuff I would prefer to discuss anything that affects us as a community. 8. Hi GunPowderBoy Yeah I think I would proceed exactly as you say. It seems to be the only thing that makes sense - I would assume it was done that way in order to be just a little tricky.
  9. I legally carry a handgun and live in VA and I would like to make a few points about the issue. First of all, those of us who are licensed are trained in safe use and also in the legal aspects of carrying. Criminals are not - and of course they don't care what the law says or requires. One point I would like to make is that I have never heard of an over-reaction by a license holder (there may well be some examples, though) A person carrying a weapon doesn't use it to bully folks and will back down if able to do so. No one I know really wants to display a gun to solve a problem. That's what sets the law-abiding citizen apart from the criminal, by the way. This is where some people speak out with no real knowledge of the subject. As to WHERE crime occurs, some people think they can figure out just where they are likely to run into trouble. These are people that need to serve in law enforcement because no one has been able to do this yet. Is a park safer than a city street or a school or restaurant? Ask the families of those who died violently in all these places. How about those who die or are wounded and terrorized by a workplace shooting. All these places SHOULD be fun, yet tragedy happens in all of them. Though some people dislike guns - and that is their right - others have the right to carry them. Like a previous poster said, we just disagree. Concealed carry makes everybody safer, even those who are afraid of guns or just don't like them. But lets learn the aspects of both sides before expressing an uninformed opinion. Respectfully yours, tamstan
  10. In my original post, I did refer to VA only, and states vary concerning gun laws. My instructor retired from a county investigator position. He warned us never to volunteer information to law enforcement officers, but answer any questions they may ask. He gave several reasons for this - the first being that it doesn't concern LEO's as long as a person is within the law. If an officer can't tell if you are within the law on any point, they are paid to find out. This is when you cooperate by answering as directly as possible. A concealed handgun is just that - concealed- and unless you have failed to cooperate or happen to fit a suspect's description, an officer won't know - and doesn't care - what is in your pocket or waistband. However, if you are stopped in your vehicle, the law officer already has access to your weapon permit information. I wonder if the policemen ask if they can use the park. Certainly not, because it is their right to legally pursue anything they would like to. Perhaps citizens should ask grocery store managers if it is OK to shop there - because you COULD be shoplifting. Or you might make a suspicious movement while shopping. At any rate, I don't know about other state's laws except for those that border my home state. My post was clear about this. Best Regards
  11. Slightly off-topic...I had once just parked on the side of the road (2 lane but not limited access) and gotten out with my GPSr when a State Trooper pulled up behind me. He asked what was up and I replied I was using the satellite system to locate a benchmark up the steep bank just a few feet from the road. He said "Oh, I thought maybe you were having trouble". I thanked him and he went his way and I found the benchmark. There is good advice in this thread and Snoogans has some great imput, but I would like to add something about VA. If you are licensed to carry a concealed handgun, you are not obligated to declare that information. Always cooperate with our fine law enforcement officers, but there is no need to volunteer this imformation. If an officer needs to know, he or she will ask, and then I personally would declare a legally concealed handgun. Otherwise, it is not their business and could lead to a misunderstanding. Always be truthful and calm, but would you voluntarily tell an officer (without being asked) that you LEGALLY own a home and 2 cars? Or that you have some cash on you that is LEGALLY yours to carry? I have the highest respect and regard for our officers, and I also want my privacy and rights honored.
  12. I've never seen a bad cache! Even missing and wet ones offer their unique experiences and often lead to email communication with the owner to give a heads-up about a particular problem. I have communicated with some great folks in this fashion and wouldn't trade those experiences for anything. I like easy city caches that are in busy areas, and I like hard hikes in remote areas, as well. I have several in areas that require strenous hikes, even overnight backpacking caches. I am saying just let new cache owners learn on their own curve like most of us did. When a cache is wet, email the owner and let them figure out why it is wet and how to remedy that. New cachers need encouragement of a hands-off nature, because cachers are very resourceful and certainly extremely intelligent. I mean very very smart. If a cache isn't one of your favorites, move on to your next find. Best Regards
  13. Hi Mark 42, I have run across instructions somewhere online for making a passive external antenna that helps these units out. Maybe you would want to search for that info. Also, I think it is a great idea for your daughter to decrypt the clues! I find something for kids in most of the caches I see. And about the geoaddiction - many of us don't talk about it much but kind of just flow with it instead of fighting it off.
  14. Hi Team Kender Flashing is used on roofs around chimneys to keep water from getting under the shingles. Most of the time folks use aluminum (which is another option for you) but fancier homes and commercial buildings have the copper. You can buy it at most hardware stores in different widths. Most places will not sell it by the foot but by the roll. Lowes should have a small roll of it. BTW I really like your stamped items shown above.
  15. I use copper flashing for different tinkering projects. I buy the thickest flashing by the foot. I have made coordinate tags from pieces cut from this with tin snips and stamped with a metal stamping set. You could get a galvanized or other hard pipe of 1" diameter or so and a few inches long and file a bevel around the outside on one end so that it will cut or "punch" out a round copper blank (as you strike the other end with a hammer). You do have to file the sharp edges a little, but it is pretty easy to do.
  16. It sounds like you got their standard fix for your particular problem - and some optional goodies as well as a fix for a known problem (the case) you may not even have had. Sounds like excellent service to me. Hope it functions fine from now on. Best Regards,
  17. I wanted to use the program, but when I went to the download area, I found out I was forbidden to use it because I hunt. Oh well, it looks like a good program though.
  18. Thanks for the replies! I believe JDMC has the answer. After reading the "Help" file (like I should have done earlier) I found that all areas aren't available for topos. It just seems odd that the whole world isn't available at my fingertips for free! The program works, the system works, but there has been a user error!
  19. I have been using USAPhotoMaps after reading about it here. I think it is great! But lately I can't download any topo maps although the photo view works just fine. Does anyone else have this trouble? Anyone know why?
  20. I tried it with a SporTrak Pro and had Rusty O Junk's experience. It won't recognize my GPSr no matter what I try. I will tinker some more before giving up.
  21. SilverBob, to answer your question, you must "save" the file - not "open" it. After you have created a folder in easygps, choose "save" and save it to the new folder. Then all will work fine.
  22. CrazyPete, I don't think it will harm your screen. I have been using a SporTrak Pro for some time now in a similar case. I take it out to change batteries. I do try to clean the plastic cover and the screen of abrasives sometimes. BTW, only yesterday I ordered a neo case like the one you linked to. Just access the buttons right through the plastic cover.
  23. I just got geoclipping and it works fine! Thanks for the quick help. Yea, I spend $$ on equipment and gadgets and all kinds of outdoor gear and want to scrimp on a very usefull subscription. Maybe later on I will subscribe and use the pocket queries.
