  1. Does anyone know the actual name for the plastic knob thing that screws in at the top of the 60 series units (like my 60cx)? I know it's used to mount the unit in cradles and stuff, but I need the name in order to discuss it with Garmin. Parsa
  2. I'm probably not going to be able to go to Anza. I'm not sure I want to anyway.... Not you guys of course, well you know why and who. In that vein, would anyone like to try to go hit a bunch of county park caches? I still have to go to Guajome for one thing. Perhaps we can design a loop for finding them just in case they all get archived soon. Parsa
  3. Oh well, I guess all the geocachers going into the parks won't be paying those day use fees will they? I'll have to get the Guajome Park caches soon I guess.
  4. Thanks Bigbill, It is not intuitive on how to change them. There's nothing to let you know you need to hit the MENU button once you are on the map setting screen. It almost seems like you'd need to check or uncheck every single box in the list, which would be ridiculous.
  5. Bobcat 2.0.0.3 Beta Garmin's Bobcat software for Mac.
  6. So, I hit end navigation. Then can I hit page, go to the map page , and use the white arrow to select the cache on the map or should I hit "Find" and select the cache that way? Like I said I thought I tried both ways and it kept trying to tell me the "driving directions". It said I should turn left at the end of the street which was about 200 feet from where I parked and go another 150 feet, which was outside the park in the middle of the street. And then every time I selected the cache waypoint again it started all over with the stupid driving diretions. So, if I get within a certain distance of the cache shouldn't it stop the driving navigation and start giving me the distance to the cache? Shouldn't it automatically do that when I get close enough to the cache? Hmmm... perhaps you are auto-navigating to a cache with the GPS locked to the road. If you do that, and the cache is not right on the road, you may never "arrive." You can navigate with it locked to the road, then when you get to the cache area, you can change it to navigate off road. Sitting here in the living room, I can't recall how that's done quickly, but it is via the MENU button I think.
  7. I'm sure someone's probably posted this before, but well here goes.... Have you ever wanted a quick way to get coordinates for a location on Google Maps? Once you are at an address or location that does not have coords in the address, just paste the following into the address box: java script:void(prompt('',gApplication.getMap().getCenter())); It will give the center coordinates in a dialog box. You can keep this on a computer sticky note, or if you have a programmable mouse, in a pop-up menu. Replace "java script" with "javascript" if this forum is separating the word... it does that to me. You can create a bookmark for this javascript, create a name for it, and hit it whenever you need it once you are at a location on the map for which you need coordinates.
  8. If you hit MENU, the first choice will be to end the navigation.
  9. Besides the download error, I'm having another odd problem. On my web site, the gpx files are downloading to the computer, but the kml files are being displayed as text in the window. You have to right click to download. If they are both xml files, what's the difference? I did find some other kml files online, and they download just as the gpx files. I can't figure out why this is happening on my site. Here is the site page with the files on it: http://www.americanroads.us/ushighways/ushighway80CA.html Parsa
  10. I'm having the same problem. The GPX files seem to be ready to download, but the KML files downloads lead to an Geocaching.com error page.
  11. It may still be possible to find 4GB SD cards that are not HC. I have a couple. They worked in my eXplorist and cameras. Buy them soon though, they wont be around very long. I know A-data made one with a pink label. They may be hard to find, and expensive. The ones on ebay are mostly crappy fakes of Sandisk cards. Stay away. You're probably better off buying regular 2GB cards... These seem to be getting rare also, so buy soon.
  12. I have a Garmin 60Cx, and already have MetroGuide North America v8. I just bought Topo USA 2008 on Amazon ($77, free shipping). Does anyone know which of these layers over the other if I have the same regions loaded for both? Is there any option to change which take precedence, or is it fixed? I'm assuming it's pretty easy to switch the top layer off and on in the map Menu screen. Correct? Parsa
  13. Pat, Someone put about 500 caches around my house. I'm not sure when that happened. Parsa
  14. I would recommend a Bluetooth data logger. You can buy several for the price of a more expensive unit. You just need software and a laptop or handheld computer of some sort. Some like the i-Trek are even solar. Semsons has a good selection. A Palm with one of these, for example, would be pretty cheap. I'm sure there's some sort of application that would do what you want.
  15. Sorry. I misunderstood your original post--obviously I did not read what you wrote, since you stated your question quite clearly as I read it now. I was thinking in terms of software to be used with Garmin receivers, as opposed to software released by Garmin. I am also curious about this. I have the Garmin Software downloaded, but have not tried to install maps, as I have none to install. I played a bit with a Garmin-compatible map of snowmobile trails, but have not tried to load it. I have no snowmobile, so I have no need for it. I did note that after running the map converter program in Windows, Bobcat sees it, but if I select it, it causes Bobcat to crash. I don't know if this is a Bobcat problem, or a problem with the mapset. I just pre-ordered CN, so I will be looking forward to finding the answer when it ships. No, problem. I haven't bought any maps as yet either. I just got a 60Cx, and so far I like it. Even with the base maps it is better than my old non-mapping 12XL. I did use one piece of Garmin software, however. WebUpdater did a fine job in upgrading both the firmware and the chip set. Smooth upgrade with no problems... The machine was an ebay overstock-type unit. It had very old software on it. BTW, is there a way to see a status or ID screen with the firmware version on the 60 series? I can't seem to find one. Parsa
  16. Second on RAM mounts. gpscity has them. Parsa
  17. I have an old 12XL that is still working, though after helping me find a couple thousand caches, it got pretty beat up. I found that GPSBabel worked fine for transferring a pocket query .gpx waypoint file to my 12XL machine. You'll have to be a premium member, do a pocket query, open up a version of GPSBabel for your operating system, find the GPX file with GPSBabel, then set the "to" section to your GPS with Garmin protocol. The GPS will need to be set to the Garmin setting also. (BTW, for some reason to the Mac users reading this, the old MacGPSBabel works for the 12XL, but I have not been able to get the newer GPSBabel+ to work.)
  18. The Blue Chart data card for Hawaii covers Guam and the Mariana Islands. Three different scales are listed as the source maps. It looks like the Pacific CD-ROM covers it too. Here are the actual marine charts online. Guam and Cocos Lagoon. Apra harbor. You might want to get a good chart, and just use the coordinates on the GPS. You can make a grid on nautical charts quite easily. Parsa
  19. You know, the American dependencies are so small, you would think they would include Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Guam and other islands into the US data sets. However, you may find decent maps in the Blue Chart maps. They are islands, so i would think they might be in there.
  20. However, there are ways of making the map segments larger so you can fit the whole CD onto the card and still stay under 2025 segments. This is being discussed in another thread. 2GB cards are not much more than 1GB cards. Many are under $20 now, and some even come with a micro USB reader and mini and full size adapter cards.
  21. Ouch, 100 euros is steep when it's converted. By the way, if you were looking for Paris on these, you would need No. 5 Ile-de-France. I think if it's only a vacation that I would second finding a copy of MetroGuide for Europe. City Navigator is twice the price for European maps than North America.
  22. I just bought a Garmin 60Cx. What software do you recommend? The City Navigator NT 2008 software is coming out for Mac (which is good), but I'm assuming it has the stupid single unlock code (which is bad). I like having topographic maps, so Topo 2008 is a possibility. No news on Mac software on this yet, but I can get it for PC and transfer to my Mac using a software app that Garmin has made. Another possibility is to find a copy of MetroGuide North America (v8). At least it is unlocked. Parsa
  23. Congrats to my geocaching buddy dhsundance on 2500. Way to go!
  24. Thanks for your replies. I too have a lot of GPS and GIS software including MacGPS Pro, which is excellent. I also use GPSBabel+ regularly as well. However, I was specifically wondering about the new batch of Garmin applications, and what they all do. It's a bit confusing whether you need them all, or if Bobcat has superseded some of them.
  25. This has been discussed several times, even recently. The 4 and 6 GB cards do work. Maps can be used on the first 2GB, but you can actually use the remainder for storing data such as tracks and such. If anyone can be more specific on what exactly can occupy the remaining space, it would be helpful since I have not seen this in the forums. Parsa
