  1. We teach GPS to educators in Illinois. Garmin set us up with a Garmin dealer who gives 30% off of the list price of most of the garmin units. Shipping is very reasonable as well. He is out of New York, we have been dealing with him for years and is great to work with. He isn't in the position to donate any units.

If you want more info, please email me. I will send you the form we use in our classes. My email address is egorny@gis2gps.com

  3. I posted this earlier - somehow it disappeared. This right from Garmin's site:

    Q. Does Garmin have any authorized dealers on eBay or any other online auction site?

    A. Garmin does not have any authorized dealers that sell new products directly on online auction sites. Any purchases made through online auction sites are on a "buyer beware" basis. A copy of the original sales receipt is required as the proof of purchase for warranty repairs. Online auction confirmations are not accepted for warranty verification and Garmin will not replace any missing components from any package purchased through an online auction.

There is always the possibility that products purchased through eBay or other online auction sites could be stolen merchandise. You assume this risk when you buy through these auction sites. If you buy a Garmin product through an online auction site and later send it to Garmin for service, if the product is determined by Garmin to be stolen merchandise upon receipt at Garmin's facility (through a serial number match), Garmin reserves the right to return the product to its rightful owner or send it to the investigating law enforcement authorities.

    Also here is the info about Software purchased from online auctions;

    Q. Can I legally purchase Garmin MapSource software on eBay or any other online auction site?

    A. Yes, Garmin MapSource software may be purchased from online auction websites. However, there are many issues that can arise from purchasing software in this manner of which customers should be aware. Some Garmin MapSource software sold on online auction sites may be pirated copies. Many of Garmin?s MapSource software titles are ?locked? software programs, meaning that they are useless until they are unlocked. If the original purchaser of the software has already used the registration or coupon codes that were provided with the purchase for unlocking the software, Garmin is not obligated to create another unlock code for the second customer. Any additional unlock codes must be purchased from Garmin.

  5. We use the GPS 60 series in our classes. Has the nice size, helix antenna, last about 23-26 hours on a set of batteries.

Also has the games that the Geko 201 has which is fun with any age group.

We work with a Garmin dealer from N.Y, he extends discount of about 30% for most Garmin units, shipping is reasonable, and no tax. Contact me and I can send you the forms with his contact info.

  6. National Geographic has software that runs on PC and Macs. It is called GPS USA, runs about 20-25 dollars.

You can download the data into an txt file, and either with a simple program like Notepad (I know Mac has a similar program) label the columns and then add it as an event theme into a GIS application.

We teach bringing it into excel, label the columns, say it as a txt file and then bring it into ArcV programs.

  7. We teach GPS and I play with several units. Garmin is a good choice. I have the 2720 for my car and several GPS 60 series for handhelds.

Either way, since you work with a fire department, we have a Garmin dealer who sells units at a good discount. Let me know if you want the info. He also sells to schools.

email me at: egorny@gis2gps.com and I can send you his contact info. He is out of New York

  8. If you want a good unit that can handle tree caverage, make sure it has a helix antenna.

Garmin has several, GPS60 series, 76 series etc. The Rhino also has a helix antenna in it.

We teach GPS to educators and other professionals. We deal with a Garmin dealer who gives a very good rate to schools and govt agencies and S&R groups. Usually it is 30% list.

Email me and I will send you the info

  9. We did a GPS class in Illinois with Geocaching as the main theme. Actually we did several of them this past summer. We use the idea of geocaching but we changed it to more virtual caches to teach things. The ideas went over very well.

Also in our GPS class, we teach about the unit, upgrading, downloading the data into Garmin's software, Google Earth and National Geographic GPS USA software. We also teach GIS using GPS but that is a different class. Actually our GPS class is a spin off of our GPS2GIS class. Some teachers are not ready for both technologies and would rather do it in steps. We had teachers from Nevada and Alaska last summer coming to the central Illinois to see our approach to GIS and GPS.

Our class can have graduate workshop credit for teachers who want it or they could get CPDU's as we call it. We have taught these classes in Ill and Wis so far.

Our main GPS page is www.ilega.org and our GPS & GIS page is www.gis2gps.com

Also if any teacher wants a good deal on Garmin units, we have a Garmin dealer who gives 30% off list the list price. Just email me for more for info. egorny@gis2gps.com

  10. If it was a new unit, you should of gotten the following:

    GPSMAP® 60Cx unit

    64 MB microSD

    Belt clip

    USB interface cable

MapSource Trip & Waypoint Manager CD

    Lanyard

    Owner's Manual

    Quick-Start Guide

The screw is for a knob that holds the Belt Clip. They usually come already attached to the unit. Belt clip is great for using with clipboards.
