  1. The trip and waypoint manager software that came with the venture HC will work. Just unzip the pocket query and open the Garmin Trip and Waypoint software and add the file. Then sync your GPS, it's pretty easy. Just keep it under 500 waypoints. I load 400 on mine so I have plenty of room for manually adding waypoints later. (puzzles and multis)
  2. I've got one in my possession right now that was released in 2006 with the goal of travelling to Disney to get a picture of it with winnie the pooh. It took 4 years to get there and about a year to make it back. It now has a picture attached. I live about 10 miles from the owners location but I haven't been as motivated to drive the last 10 miles to one of the owners caches because it looks like they quit geocaching.
  3. Thanks for the replies. I ended up moving pretty quick and the caches are already published and found.
  4. I'm just starting to add a description for a couple of caches I'm planning. I've unchecked the enable listing box. If I hit "report new listing" does this just save my work and nothing else. The caches aren't ready yet. Also, does this reserve my location?
  5. I just went to the geomate jr. update page and selected the U.S. western database and it shows the entire state of Alaska.
  6. I just installed a ram mount for my PN-40 yesterday and tried it out this morning. It's awesome, I can't wait to do more biking. My bikes been collecting dust for years. I also ordered a mount for a Venture HC for my wifes bike. It was only $12 on ebay.
  7. I use geospere. It works great. Lots of ways to filter. Easy to enter and upload field notes. You can pick up a gps cradle for your iPod as well.
  8. I know nothing about the 60csx but just read a post by a guy in the technology forum from a guy who plugged his into a car and may have fried it. Just a heads up.
  9. Finally got mine. It took 6 weeks all together after the paypal delay and USPS estimate of 2-3 days was more like 2 weeks. I'm Canadian so I had it shipped to a hotel where I was scheduled to stay and it didn't arrive in time. I finally had a trip back to the same hotel and luckily it was still there after 3 weeks at the front desk. As for the refurbished unit, It came with Topo 9.0 which was important since I need the Canadian maps. The Delorme Topo maps for Canada are pretty bad though, many key landmarks where I go aren't there and they are on the free icybus topos I use on my Garmin. The unit appears to be brand new, there isn't a mark on it. I think it was purchased and immediately returned without being used. Thanks for posting this deal, it's a lot of bang for the buck. No complaints about epal so if they ever get more of these in stock don't hesitate to grab one.
  10. Not sure if anybody cares but I just noticed Topo 9.0 is at Amazon for $29.99
  11. I've been using the Dual XGPS251. You can get it right now on Amazon for $79. I use it with the Geosphere app, Navigon and offmaps. Its not rugged but is great for walking around the city or navigating by car (with navigon) and then jumping out for a quick park 'n grab. It's actually becoming my preferred device. When I'm in the trails I use my Garmin but otherwise I've been using this. It take a while to acquire the satellites but all the other benefits outweigh that problem.
  12. I've skipped a lot of urban caches because I feel silly. I'm still new at this and I'm starting to get over it. I actually bought a gps cradle for my iPod for urban caching so it will just look like I'm texting or something. My gps is yellow so it was too obvious. I recently found a few caches on busy main streets with my iPod that I wouldn't have had the guts to do two months ago when I started out with my yellow garmin.
  13. I found this after a little googling. http://protectsensitiveecosystems.blogspot.com/
  14. I had a similar problem. I think it was something to do with paypal not allowing recurring charges, only one time payments. Some membership options worked and others did not.
  15. Mine works flawlessly and I've updated it numerous times. I've always done it on a computer running 32 bit windows vista and Internet explorer.
  16. The T means it includes topographic maps.
  17. It sounds like you didn't download the macro. It's an add-on for GSAK to allow it to create an e-pub. It's linked at the beginning of this thread.
  18. So I couldn't resist trying that macro even though I have no intention of using my Kindle for this purpose. It actually works OK. The size limit seems to be 100 caches. I did a pocket query which held 400 caches and it created 4 e-books for me. Running the macro on GSAK took about 10 minutes and converting and sending all 4 books to the kindle took about 30 minutes. It's all pretty much hands off though. The end result isn't bad. The book is searchable by GC code or name. It's actually fairly quick, the first page has the alphabet, you click on a letter and it will take you to a page containing all caches beginning with that letter. Click on the cache you want and you see the description, past logs and hint. Searching by GC code wasn't very good. The only formatting problem is the page with difficulty rating is slightly cut off and you can't see the difficulty level. If I didn't have an iPod touch I would definitely use this, just be sure your pocket query contains a maximum of 100 caches because I don't know how GSAK separated the 400 caches. Run multiple smaller queries with unique names for each one. The macro I tried was the first one mentioned, I didn't try the mobigen one.
  19. I just did one and added it to my Kindle out of curiosity. I just printed the cache description as a .PDF, imported the file into my Calibre library and then sent it to the kindle. It's readable and took about one minute. If you planned on doing 20 caches plan about 30 minutes to send them over. Printing would be faster but it is nice not to have to print. Maybe theres a better way.
  20. The kindle will read PDF files and you can easily print a cache description as a PDF file. It would be pretty long and involved though. I find the kindle (and all ereaders) have slow processors, I've tried to load large manuals on them and then do a keyword search, forget it, it takes forever.
  21. I think that one requires it to be plugged in to use the GPS, it's not made for handheld use. I have one made by Dual. It's the XGPS251. It has it's own battery built in and charges when you're in the car. It's pretty cool but you wouldn't want it as your primary geocaching GPS. Some benefits are you'll get true wireless and battery free Geocaching, you can run a pocket query from the ipod touch, load it into an app like Geosphere and then get turn by turn spoken directions to the cache with the Navigon app. Once you arrive, pop the unit out of the windshield mount and use it as a handheld. The wires go into the windshield mount so you don't need to mess around with them. It also extends the battery life of your iPod and adds a microphone for Skype. This would be the dream device if it weren't for a few critical problems. Your ipod is still not protected from the elements and if you drop it you'll possibly break the iPod and the cradle. The signal can take forever to pickup and sometimes it won't get a signal at all. If you're driving to a cache and have it mounted to the windshield navigating it will be fine to pop it out and take a short walk to the cache but if it's in your pocket and you decide to pull it out and turn it on to quickly see if there are any caches nearby, find yourself a comfortable bench, you might be there awhile. When I'm using the compass page on the geosphere app it seems to be easily confused when I'm moving slowly, more so than a Garmin handheld. The distance still counts down nicely so you can use that while it's confused. It also tends to jump around more when you're close to the cache, my Garmin would be steady at 0-5 feet for example and this would be jumping from 0-80feet or so.
  22. I'm looking forward to receiving mine as well. Paypal is useless unfortunately and even though the money has been withdrawn from my bank account for a week now the payment to epal is still pending. I emailed Delorme about the upgrade to topo 9, they sent me a form to fill out and send in with the barcode from the GPS package. It says on it the cost is $9.95 for shipping. Hopefully it works out. I figure I won't see mine for at least 2 weeks and then another six weeks for Topo 9 so hopefully I'll have a new toy for this spring.
