  1. Hmm yea, I notice they don't have a compass though (how I usually navigate when close). Seems a bit of money needs spending to get something decent! Half wondering about just buying a good waterproof case for my phone  How good are the base maps, do most people find they need additional maps? Do any come with google maps?

If I could stretch my budget to say 150-200 (obviously a bit more but if I saved for longer) would I be in "good" GPS territory? Are garmin generally the best?

    Lo there

I use the etrex 30, and it does have a compass on, and I belive 10 and the 20 also have a compass, hope this helps

  2. To be less harsh here, different environments will dictate different levels of littering. I can't imagine that Dartmoor will ever get as bad as what has been collected in the two photos above. There is obviously litter about, and any cachers who go out with the mission to collect litter should be commended. I just can't help thinking that a dedicated meet up time would allow cachers to at least get together if they wanted.

The other thing which I don't think all CITO's adhere to is the "Cache In" bit, where a new cache is placed in the area which has been "Trashed Out". I don't suppose this is mandatory anyway.

Sorry to say, dartmoor does get the same sort of rubbish, before moving back to the midlands, I was working for the southhams council for 6 years, my job was to pick it up, but I say good on all of you that make the effort.

  3. At a halloween event, I was talking to some other cachers, and one one said to me and my sometimes caching buddy,

that we did not look like cachers, I'm not sure what a cacher looks like, so just for a bit of fun,

could you let me know, and I'll see If I come into any of your ideas of what a cacher looks like.

You look like a flat nosed, ugly looking dog.

    Very good close

  4. Very interesting this one, if only because I'm curious what a 'cacher' feels they look like?

I have also had the comment that I 'Don't look like a cacher' but then .... I have never met two cachers the same.

I will leave my 'description' till others reply as i don't want anyone picking on me!

    LOL

  6. First of all you need to have your photgraph 'hosted' somewhere. For the purposes of the monthly competition you can just have it uploaded to a log on the geocache where you took the photo.

Once you have the photo attached to a log you need to get the URL for the photo: Go to the log, click View Images and then click on the photo to view it on a separate page. Then you've got its URL at the top, which will look something like

    http ://img.geocaching.com/cache/log/617ade5a-6300-44b8-832f-f89eecc9af2f. jpg

To put the photo into your forum post you click Reply in the usual way, then above the text box click on the tiny tree icon. This opens a little box - copy/paste the photo URL into the box, and click "Insert image".

That will put its detail into the text box, looking something like

    [ img ]http://img.geocaching.com/cache/log/617ade5a-6300-44b8-832f-f89eecc9af2f.jpg[ /img ] (Without the extra spaces)

Then just add your caption/text to say a bit about it and which cache it was.

Then you can click 'Preview Post' to see what it all looks like. And 'Add Reply' when you're happy with it.

Hope that helps. Ask for more details if you don't understand any of that. :)

    Many thanks worked atreat.

  7. I have had my trusty secondhand etrex for just over a year now, it has been fantastic for me starting out on geocaching. It is now starting to sometimes loose it's little spring where the batteries go, so far i have managed to spot it once it lands as it pings out of the back!

So i am thinking of a new one, but I have no idea what to buy.

Maybe one that shows a map, but as i am in no way a "techi" nothing too complicated but maybe something up from the one I have.

    I would welcome any ideas/help

    many thanks

the new garmin 10-- 20-- 30 look ok I'm thinking of upgrading myself, and the price don't seem to bad, go outdoors stock them.

  8. I need help with an argument on the internet. Can someone please complete this line for me:
