  1. When I sent my (older) Garmin in for repair they asked if I'd been using rechargables and advised against their use. They operate at a lower voltage and could have been responsible for component damage. If you do choose to use rechargables I'd go for those with a longer life (e.g. 2000 mAh or above). Cheaper ones are often as low as 1300mAh.
  2. Our German Shepherd, Tzara allows us to accompany her when we're out and about here in Cumbria. She's quite happy for us to help her with your quest!
  3. Scan Computers in Bolton have all three TomTom's in stock. Look here If it's showing on their site then it's in stock. They will ship next day by CityLink. Amazon also have them.
  4. I've used this on-line service here Only £1.50 per phone unlock.
  5. Thanks Pharisee and all who responded. Quite enjoyed the mystery!
  6. In the cache at The Dodgy Gate today we found a sheet of stickers which simply had "The Northern Cache" and co-ordinates N 54°48.758 W 2°26.350. However, a search of Geocache.com and the forums don't produce any further details. Is this a long gone cache/event or something different?
  7. Thanks Fangsy. Helps to know it wasn't us doing something wrong. From our experiements today it seems to matter which way round the inputting is done as the discrepency on the ground can be quite a few metres different. Do most cachers input decimal degrees rather than BNG? Despite all this, we're still unsure how we should have our GPS set up as per our question above.
  8. We're just a litle concerned about the accuracy of our Garmin GPS II Plus and wonder if we have it configured properly having just marked a known location and checked it against Memory Map but there seems to be a discrepency. Under SYSTEM MENU > NAVIGATION of our there are a number of options for HEADING; Auto Mag W005 / True / Grid E000 / User Mag E000. Could someone please confirm which we should use? We currently have DATUM set to WGS84 and CDI SCALE set to +/-0.25. We believe these are correct. Something else which is confusing us is using CARROCK FELL as an example, the cache sheet gives the co-ordinates as (N 54° 41.654 W 003° 00.254) NY 35371 33704 but converting the latter on our GPS (and by switching modes on Memory Map) we're given an actual BNG of NY 35370 33709. Can anyone explain this discrepency please?
  9. Quite a few castles here in the (northern) Lake District
  10. I'd heartily recommend www.seem.co.uk both for domain registrations and for hosting. They offer excellent customer service (I've had replies to queries at 3 in the morning!) and importantly, don't charge for importing or exporting domains (unlike some). No connection, just a satisfied customer.
  11. If pay-as-you-go road charging comes into being we'd setle for a one-way ticket and mail one back.
  12. Maybe http://www2.getmapping.com ?
  13. John ~ When you say you have had problems installing do you literally mean so or are you having problems in configuring one of your GPS modules? I had real difficulty getting TT5 to recognise by Bluetooth GPS and ended up selecting Cable GPS to make it work (go figure!). I must admit I like the new version very much especially now I've added in the 7 digit postcodes from www.pocketgps.co.uk and the voice activations for Gatso's in place of the stoopid bells and whistles. The former requires the file placing in a folder on the SD card called 'zip' and a blank folder created called TomTom. Haven't been 'off road' with it yet and there appears to be no conflicts wth Memory-Map running on the same PDA (iPAQ rx3715). Hope this helps.
  14. I don't think Coniston has had broadband for very long and at the moment they only have a maximum of 1Mb connections available. I'm pretty sure there is no internet cafe there (haven't been for a couple of months) but some of the bigger hotels may have facilities but possibly just for residents? Sorry I can't recommend anywhere directly but maybe a few enquiries through http://www.coniston-net.com/ may produce a result. Have a great time here in the lakes.
  15. Thanks Jackplug. We've just gone through the whole menu again and did get a positive message via http://www.geocaching.com/forums/register.aspx so we'll see if time sorts it like yours. Cheers
  16. We're having the same problem. Where's the 'register' button please?
  17. Ironically a UFO supposedly crashed on CARROCK FELL in the 1950's. Maybe an idea for a future cache?
  18. You may also be interested to try the new Google Maps (still in beta) with satellite images (see top right of the page). http://maps.google.com/ Works best for USA maps at the moment but no doubt they will roll it out worldwide in time. If you fancy a peek at the detail possible have a look at Area 51 via http://www.livejournal.com/community/the_u...ined/37956.html If you fancy a challenge, go find
