Mary and I headed south to hit some caches since my son was doing a math team thing in Dos Palos. Really interesting area. Check out http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=7079 I found this one but ran out of time and couldn't go for the others. There is a FTF that Iron Chef put up that has some REALLY interesting items. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=15216 lot's of dirt road traveling in this area. george george hey george didn't you know that a PIPEFITTER/WELDER is required to know a good deal of math, not only that we bring the proper tools. tomaski I made the mistake of thinking that everything was a clue. Including, the main photo on the page, thus I had to make sense of the other surounding area clues, and the OTHER PINK and BLUE things near the main coordinates. My wife would still be there looking if I had not told her that we need to step back and rethink this and come back later. BTW.. I'm posting a 5 cache today... watch for it in a park near you. george

Yeah, but I'll keep looking if I know it's a micro. Otherwise I'm likely to give up after about 30 minutes. george
  3. Not a lot of area cachers are using ammo cans but I really like them. So far I've found the best prices on them are at the Turlock Army Surplus sotre on Lander. About 4.50 for the 30 cal and 5.50 for the 50 cal Cresent Supply had 30 cals for 6.50 and they're were not nearly as nice and clean as the Turlock supply. george btw... i'm looking at ammo cans because I feel an underwater cache coming... did I say too much?
  4. quote:Originally posted by macro: I started this in another thread but felt it deserved its own...at what point does a microcache become impossible to find? In my neck of the woods a 35mm Film Canister is no longer considered small...they are even smaller! I know of at least one microcache that is approximately 1/4" X 1 1/2" X 1"...hidden in a wooded area among several fallen trees! So..at what size will you stop searching? 1/2 pint container? film canister? an empty chapstick tube? A matchbox? I friend of mine is preparing a cache made out of a drill bit tube. 1/4 inch tube about 4 inches long. He plans to hide it in out in the open sort of way. As long as they tell me it's a micro and give me an idea of what size cache I'm looking for, I'll go for it. george
  5. quote:Originally posted by BassoonPilot: I voted for "over 90 feet," but the actual distance was over 300 feet. How do you find a cache over 300 ft away? And what kept you looking when you were over 300 ft away? george
  6. I've only been cachine about a month and ahalf and when I started I expected caches to be within 10-15 ft of where the gps lead me. As the cache numbers increased I've increased my search areas and come to a greater understanding of how far off I can be, even with good satalite reception. What I want to know is... What's the furthest you've found the cache from the coordinates given. This does not include offset caches?
  7. quote:Originally posted by Ron Streeter: I hit a few in Modesto on Friday the 8th and still have some cleanup work to do down your way. I also want to put out some more caches in the next couple of weeks. __I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost.__ Also, I noticed that we had trampled Girls Rule, especially the area around the cache so we tried to trample other areas where the cache could be hidden as not to give a too obvious clue. But it was partly trampled when we got there as well. Tall grass makes quick trails. We found RECYCLE 1 today and it had been 2 weeks since anyone had been there and you could still see a partial trail leading to the area. george

  9. There are a handful of cachers in my area. I've only been doing it a month and a half but in that time I've watched about 3-4 more pop up in the area. There are 3 of us who are bike riding buddies and we are competative. If one of us places a cache the other two race to it. About two weeks ago I went for one of those caches. As I pulled up in my truck toward the trail head who was to appear? My buddy laughing and telling me I was about 20 minutes too late. That's ok. I'll get him next time. george

  12. I found 4 caches yesterday in the rain... well only the first two were in the rain. It had stopped by the last two. A friend was visiting from Utah and this was the only day I could get off when he was here so we went. One required a couple miles of bike riding along a canal bank so we ended up muddy and wet but we found the cache. A light drizzle feels differently when riding a bike. george
  13. The distance you have to travel vs the distance the gps says the cache is are in NO way realated in the delta region. How many big s curves do you think I had to ride my bike through to travel 1 mile toward a cache. Ron, you are an evil evil person to put me thourgh that. And on top of that, I was introducing a friend from Salt Lake City to the sport. He thought is was funny when I ended up on the wrong side of rivers from caches or when we had to ride 2.5 miles to get to a cache that was a mile away. By the end of the day he was pretty much hooked and now is figuring out how to scrounge up some money to buy his own gps. I have lost all sympathy for Ron and the caches that stumped him in Modesto. have a good one george

  15. quote:Originally posted by DisQuoi: I'm preparing a cache that requires the finder to mathematically triangulate the location of the main cache from three reference points. It would help me to know if a typical finder can do this. This new poll option is perfect for this. Given three reference points with distances ... Being a math teacher, this makes me giggle. If you know how many times, "when are we ever going to use this?". I guess you just never know when you're going to use this. You should have paid attention to your math teacher and then you could all choose the first. george
  16. Round Valley got rained out so we hit some others in the valley. Field of Flags Barbie Pink Girls Rule and Skunks Toybox Due to road closures we denied skullduggery george
