  1. I think I would have prefered a donation to what happens to also be my alma matter instead of a throw down. Cache was located in a university garden.

    icon_smile.gifFound it 12/20/2011

Found container in one spot and swag in another...combined them...nice place!

    icon_smile.gifFound it 11/17/2011

Neat location - but there was actually no container or travel bug in this location. We did find a cool piece of swag in its place though!

    icon_smile.gifFound it 11/02/2011

The new cache container is "small"...not an ammo box. And wondering all those apples? Thanks

    icon_smile.gif Found it 10/01/2011

In lieu of a contribution to my Alma Mater, I replaced this cache. TFTC.

    No response from CO??

    Not found, sorry...

Due to construction this cache has been removed. Contacted owner and am waiting for reply to return cache and contents. Garden is still open just not as pristine at the moment.

  2. So I just did a little bit of research and it appears that the forum software that Groundspeak is using is IP.Board. Interesting thing is that IP.Board 3.x has been supported in Tapatalk since April 2010. When tapatalk was first brought up here, the forum was running IP.Board 2.1 which was the reason support couldn't be added. I'm not sure what version Groundspeak is currently running, but you would think that in 2 years they would have upgraded to the latest by now, right?

  3. This did not seem like a feature or bug, so I tossed to the How do I forum to see if others can help.

Thanks - wasn't sure how to move the thread myself.

I was able to solve the problem by deleting the geocaching app and reinstalling it. Thanks for everyones help.

This seems like it would be a bug in the iphone app, doesn't it?

  4. Whatever software Groundspeak currently uses for their forum isn't supported by tapatalk. They would need to switch to an entirely different system for their forum like vBulletin, SMF, phpBB, etc.

See this post by Moun10Bike: http://forums.Ground...5

It is unfortunate though. I also am a tapatalk user.

  5. I'm not seeing the need to scroll. What device are you using and why are you logging out in the first place?

I'm on a 13" Macbook White which and I have to scroll down to get to the login screen.

Why logout ? Security, I always run with Private Browsing mode in Firefox, not that I need to justify the why, but I'd thought I'd answer

The http://www.geocaching.com/my/default.aspx screen that takes me to my home page has far too vertical a structure for anything remotely close to a modern laptop which tends to have a more horizonal/DVD-format aspect ratio. There is no technical reason that TPTB couldn't tweak their orientation to make the home screens more laptop friendly.

Could you post a screen shot? You shouldn't have to scroll.

  6. Not sure if this has been talked about before (and yes I have search the forums for the last 30min trying to find anything) but would it be possible to have a ability to change the icons for the cache type just as you can now change the listed co-ords?

Reason being when you have done the puzzle or qualified for a challenge cache then it is essentially just a traditional cache thereafter.

And you could then run a PQ for just trad caches and your solved puzzles would show.

I know this can be done in GSAK but you have to lock the field and then the cache isn't updated when a new PQ is loaded into GSAK so you don't know if the cache has been disabled or archived since you locked the cache details.

I also think it would be easier to just keep the whole process under one site instead of having to run multiple programs to do the same job.

Is anyone else on the same wave length here?

Please if i have posted in the wrong forum or there is already talk about this please point me in the wrong direction.

Keep up the good work Groundspeak.

Cache types, and therefore the icons, are not changed after publication except in rare situations. If people have found a puzzle cache or a challenge cache, and if the icon were changed, the statistics of the finders would be automatically altered to show that they had found only a traditional. Among other things that could cause persons who have qualified for a challenge by having found certain cache types to no longer be qualified.

Exception situations could include errors in a cache page that can be corrected before finds are logged on the cache page. Exceptions are very rare.

What he's suggesting would be for personal use only. Just like you can input your own coordinate on a puzzle cache after you have solved it.

Though this belongs in the suggestion forum.

  7. Some of us refuse to get on facebook.

No one is making you use Facebook, not even Groundspeak.

Once you are logged in with your regular Groundspeak credentials, the Facebook login button doesn't even show up.

Yes, you say it: "Once you are logged in". But everytime I log in I have to scroll down to find the geocaching login possibility. Facebook is speading out far too much!

I don't see the need for any scrolling...

  8. I'm curious when you say you turn off your WiFi and 4G. Didn't know the iPhones had 4G yet.

Also, 4g came with the last iOS update.

Actually the only thing that changed with the latest OS update is the little cell service icon for AT&T iPhones 4S's. The iPhone doesn't have a LTE or WiMax chipset (the only two types of 4g networks in the US). Sadly, its just a marketing gimmick and speeds weren't increased with the update.

Here's some articles that explains what happened:

    http://thenextweb.com/apple/2012/03/08/att-apple-hspa-lie/

    http://www.theverge.com/2012/3/8/2853128/in-a-triumph-of-marketing-at-t-upgrades-apples-iphone-to-4g

Google "iphone 4s 4g update" and you'll probably get thousands of articles on the subject.

  9. I'm assuming this is in the wrong topic, since the Challenges app is free.

As for your question and if you are talking about the $10 Geocaching app, then if your new phone is an Android phone you do not need to repurchase the app. Just log into the Google Play Store (formerly Android Market) with the same account that you used on your old phone and you'll be able to download the app for free.

  10. ... I wish GS would put that much effort into a solution that would teach owners to clear no longer needed NM icons. ...

Perhaps to this end, Groundspeak should change the system so that if a cache has an NM icon, then the CO can only post an "Archive", "Disable", or "Owner Maintenance" log. I could see this being applied to other scenarios as well. For instance, if a cache is disabled, only allow "Enable" or "Archive" logs by the CO.

OK. Sorry, briansnat. You can have your thread back.

I like this, although I'd also include the "Write Note" option for both cases.

  11. The bigger problem was that the owner was being denied placement, while others were using the same methods, that is where the problem came from. I know two wrongs....but he had a problem with uneven application as it pertained to his caches. So if the current thinking is that they will not be allowed, someone should point blank say it.

It is not my placement, but the problem is not really related to the specific placement, it is related to the idea that others are using the placement technique locally and this owner is being denied. The local review standards should apply uniformly, not just to one cacher in particular.

I understand what you're saying now. In this case, I'd bring it up with the reviewer and ask why the same cache hide type is being approved in some cases and denied in others. Maybe the ones being approved have permission from the fence owner?

  12. The subject cap was on a chain link fence next to a highway access path to a rail trail. Personally, I thought it was a strech to consider it defacement. The bigger problem was that the owner was being denied placement, while others were using the same methods, that is where the problem came from. I know two wrongs....but he had a problem with uneven application as it pertained to his caches. So if the current thinking is that they will not be allowed, someone should point blank say it.

If the fence owner denies permission then there's not much you can really do. It doesn't matter if a certain type of hide is allowed or not at that point. You just need find a different location.

  13. Thank you for the input on hanging Bird House caches, I am sure it will prove helpful to some others. But I think I answered my own intial inquiry, in that I looked up what constitutes defacing, and it specifically refers to marring the surface of an object, and therefore concluded that placement inside of an acorn fence cap does not (absent outside marring) violate the defacing guideline. Thanks for the input.

Since when is the underside/inside of an object not a surface? If you are "marring the surface of an object", then why does it matter if it's exposed or not?

I would agree with Cardinal Red. Leaving aside the interpretation of the wording in the guidelines, If I owned an item, and someone stuck something to it, either inside, or outside, I'd consider that you defaced it. Maybe you didn't harm it, but you still altered it. It's just as simple as that!

Lets try to not spin things to match our wishes.

If a tree falls in a forest nd no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

Something attached to the inside of a fencepost cap that was intended to never again have the inside seen is defacing that cap? I'm sorry, but I'm not going to take the guidelines that literally. Even if it were the original cap and the fence ower discovered it, I seriously can't see any reasonable person being upset over that.

The thing I've found with these types of hides is that the caps can get stuck, which means a cacher then picks up a rock and taps the cap off. After 100 of these "taps", the cap and post starts to look a bit beat up. Then add to the fact that sometimes a cacher might do this to the nearest few posts if they guessed incorrectly initially. Even if your hide only defaces the inside surface of a single fence cap, this can lead to defacement of the outside of multiple posts and caps over time.

I can't see any reasonable fence owner not being upset at the fact that a few of his posts and caps got marred without his permission. The end-all, be-all solution to this issue is to just ask the owner of the fence if you can place a simple little cache under his/her cap.
