  1. Since the Groundspeak Forums run on third party software (Invision Power Board), it's unlikely that you'll see this implemented. Do you know if there's a more recent version of the IPB forum software that includes a "Return to Top" hovering button?

As a workaround, you can press the "HOME" button on your keyboard, or press the top of the screen on your touchscreen phone browser.

Haven't seen it first hand on an IPBoard powered forum. I've seen it on a couple of other platforms, but I assume it's probably community provided add-ons or something.

No Home button on my MacBook.

This gives me an idea though. I wonder if there is a Chrome extension that can provide this feature? I'd probably want it to be able to be enable or disable depending on the specific site I'm browsing. I'll have to look into this.

  2. Just a simple feature request. Could the same Return To Top Of Page button that is present in the lower right corner of geocache listings (it was introduced a couple months ago I think) be added to all pages within the forums? I know of a few other forums who have added this type of button, and it's very useful. I like how it hovers on top of other content and stays in one place as you scroll.

  3. Looking at the screenshots of the Geocaching program for Android it shows the live map with the individual caches in the general area.. But going into the actual program it seems that it isn't an option for me.. Am I wrong or have I not set the program up properly to enable the feature..

Thanks in advanced for the help..

After you draw up the list of Nearby Caches, press the phones Menu button and then press "View on Map". If you scroll away from the nearby caches, you can press the phones Menu button and then press "Search Here".

One of the great things I like about apps with a "Live Map" is that you can be driving down the road and the app automatically populates the map with the surrounding caches. No need to mess with your phone and do a new search every couple miles.

Hear hear. I've often said, as we drive along, "there....was one! Dammit!"

I suppose the constant scraping of the site is the reason that Groundspeak has problems with "live maps" and states that the other app violates the Terms of Use. It is just as easy for me to set up a pq for caches along a route or a large enough search area so that I can stop if I actually want to do so. And if am somewhere unexpected, and feel like I might want to stop, it is not that difficult to search the area just up the road.

As already mentioned in the thread, Neogeo has a "Live Map" and does not violate the ToU.

Another app called CacheSense (which has a responsive and active developer unlike neogeo) also has a "Live Map" I believe. The app is also using the official API and does not violate the ToU.

  4. I don't have an Android but a buddy of mine does and he uses something called "c:geo" and loves it. Kinda does something similar to the "live" type map but with a twist...check it out. Might be just what you're looking for...then again it may not.

c:geo uses unapproved methods of retrieving data from this site and is completely and utterly unsupported by Groundspeak. If changes are made to the site, it could very possibly break the app (and has in the past).

I've heard a lot of Android users say that Neongeo is an excellent app, and I believe it has a live map that accesses the data in the proper way.

Since the thread was bumped I figure I'll post an update on this. Neogeo hasn't been updated in 10 months and the developer is ignoring is own support forum. People might want to look closely at alternatives prior to purchasing Neogeo.

  5. I didn't know it was okay to use another cache site's caches for clues.

    - "This cache has a little sister. She follows him closely, so use her coordinates for checking your results."

    Learn something new every day...

Really? I've seen a a few like that, and even one that used a trackable item page on a cache which showed the tb to be in the hands of a pseudo user which had a profile page that contained information required to solve the puzzle.

Umm... Did you click the link? I don't think you did.

No I hadn't. I guess I read "cache site" as "cache page". That looks like a german version of opencaching.us (not that other opencaching site). I know that there at least a few geocaching sites in other countries but I wonder if GS doesn't see them as competitors, and thus let it stand. In any case, I don't recall a specific guideline that one can not put a link on a cache page to another geocaching site. It could be one of those hidden guidelines.

More likely the description was changed after publication.

  6. i'm relatively new here, w/only 150 finds, but i'm having a great time in the woods. some "small" caches i find seem to lean more toward "micro", while some "small"s look like they should have been labeled "regular". i'd like to start hiding some caches of my own, but are there some guidelines that i just don't know about?

    From Geocaching 101 http://www.geocaching.com/guide/

micro.gif Micro - Less than 100ml. Examples: a 35 mm film canister or a tiny storage box typically containing only a logbook or a logsheet. A nano cache is a common sub-type of a micro cache that is less than 10ml and can only hold a small logsheet.

small.gif Small - 100ml or larger, but less than 1L. Example: A sandwich-sized plastic container or similar.

regular.gif Regular - 1L or larger, but less than 20L. Examples: a plastic container or ammo can about the size of a shoebox.

large.gif Large - 20L or larger. Example: A large bucket.

other.gif Other - See the cache description for information.

Small, Regular and Large containers typically contain trade items.

  7. Since Geocacher Magazine has been brought up again recently and continues to scam people, I figured I'd post an update.

Any information available in this post is publicly available. I've added some more details including a phone number registered to the website.

Richard Garrick lists himself as the "Managing Editor at Geocacher Magazine" https://www.facebook.com/garrick.rick

At one point for a short while he was addressing people and refunding them, but then inquiries went ignored again.

The Geocacher Magazine facebook page https://www.facebook...ocacherMagazine remains semi-active with a post made as recently as January 18th, 2013.

The website continues to solicit subscriptions for a magazine that doesn't exist.

    Here's some updated info:

Feel free to add anymore information

  8. You might be able to write your description like this one: http://coord.info/GC3CQ9K

Include a table of conditions and state that a finder needs to meet 25 out of 50 conditions listed.

Then also include information about BadgeGen, Project-GC, and GSAK to make it easier for a person to figure out if they qualify or not.

  9. Our profile says we have X finds, but only X-4 "Distinct" finds. I'm guessing this means we've mistakenly logged 4 caches twice - maybe both Santagrandpa from his laptop at home and Mrs. Santagrandpa on her smart phone in the field. Anyone know how we can find the duplicates? We'd like to eliminate them to get our count accurate. THANKS!

  10. I have a Iphone 4, a nokia lumia windows phone and an android device,

Why do I have to pay £6.99 for the geocache app for each device?

should you not be able to buy it, and then get a download link for cross platform like iphone, windows mobile and android? or get 1 copy for each of your devices.

Iv paid for the app for my iphone, iv paid for premium membership, I dont really want to pay another two times.

    6.99 x 4 is not cheap

Each device you list is developed by 3 different competitors. The iPhone runs iOS and is developed by Apple, the Nokia runs Windows Phone and is developed by Microsoft, and the tablet runs Android and is developed by Google. These three companies compete directly against each other, thus their respective App Stores are incompatible with each other. There is no license transfers or recognition by one another. This is the reason you need to purchase the app separately for each device.

Now as for a separate issue, what is possible is for Groundspeak to provide the app for free to Premium Members and to restrict/lockdown some or all features for Basic Members using their API, but it seems Groundspeak needs to milk their users out of as much money as possible. Oh well, this is just how things are. They need to pay their bills and make money somehow.

  11. I've been trying to upload photos to add to my "found it"-log. But it doesn't work currently. I've done it many times before, so it's not the user who is the problem ;-)

Anybody else with the same experience?

(arrgh, typo in the headline - can't edit it...)

Do you happen to be using the Android app?

  12. This reminded me of something I read on cracked.com the other day.

Would Spomenik's (translates literally to monument) fit in this potential category? These things are located in former Yugoslavia and were constructed after WWII. I think their only purpose was for intimidation/propaganda purposes. They'd probably be accepted in the Abstract Public Scuptures category also. These structures are huge though. It's too bad my chances of seeing these are pretty much zero.

  13. Your posted waymark is an objective description of the waymark. When you visit your waymark, you can then add those less objective comments about the waymark that were not appropriate for the posted description.

    Agreed.

Besides, I think of a waymark as not just a "listing" on waymark.com, but as something that you visit. (Surprise, surprise!) So therefore, when I visit a "thing" to make it into a waymark, I visited it that thing. I also made it into a waymark (if approved), but that does not subtract the fact that I visited that thing. And as elyob said, I can add some text into my visit that might be of more of a personal nature that doesn't seem to fit in the listing itself. I haven't done a lot of that, but it's a good idea.

As to statistics, since I visit everyone of my "posts" (things that I had listed), I just subtract to find the number of other people's waymarks (things) that I've visited.

    I agree.

Waymarking and Geocaching are very different to me.

I wouldn't post a find log on my own geocache because before me, it didn't exist. I didn't find it, I placed it and then listed it on gc.com.

Waymarks exist outside of wm.com and exist whether or not I list them on wm.com. They must be visited before they can be listed on wm.com, thus I post a visit log on my own waymarks. I went to a particular site, I visited a particular waymark, and then if it isn't already in on wm.com, I create a listing for it.

  14. A bug with the new emails.

I'm an Officer for the group managing the "Preserved Machine" category. We just voted on our category to send it to Peer Review. The vote passed, but the email I received says the vote was "Cancelled".

    Hello from Waymarking.com!

The polls are now closed and the votes have been tallied. Here are the results:

  15. 3. Categories like McDonald's Restaurants are more interesting than categories which are focusing on sports and nature. But ok, that is how it is.

I can tell you that this particular statement couldn't be more wrong. I know you're upset, but if McDonald's was submitted as a category today, it wouldn't stand a chance of passing. People's opinions of certain categories have changed over time and it appears that many people's opinion of Limited Availability categories has also changed.
