  1. Update: The OP/CO changed the name of their cache to "Do you see a house?" which may be part of the reason why the reviewer chose to end the review process and refer the cache owner to Geocaching HQ.

So let's answer the OP's question. See the cache container icon in the photo below? Do you see a house? Do you see why a reviewer might question this location?

Once again, a simple reviewer note saying that the maps have changed likely would have cleared this up. The FTF would already have been logged.

Using the "Google Maps" link on the cache page this is what shows up for me:

Using the "Bing Maps" link on the cache page this shows up for me:

  2. I found this info on Firefox today and now the Garmin Communicator is working again just fine. You only need to tweak one line in the Firefox config. Here is the post and link to follow.

    From Firefox:

"Override add-on signing (advanced users): You can override this setting by changing the xpinstall.signatures.required preference to false in the Firefox Configuration Editor (about:config page). Support is not available for any changes made with the Configuration Editor so please do this at your own risk."

Keep in mind that this is temporary. Next version will not allow you to change that setting anymore. Instead of jumping through hoops to keep the plugin working it's time to adjust your workflow.

Please explain "it's time to adjust your workflow".

Yesterday, for the first time, Firefox refused to allow the plug-in to work. It was working fine just last Friday.

Another solution to the problem is to forget about using Firefox and use IE instead.

Eventually all modern browsers will stop supporting NPAPI plugins and Groundspeak will remove support for the Communicator plugin all together.

Take a look at the statement on Garmin's website here and have a look at the Microsoft article they link to:

  3. Or, at least, it is possible that the area was not posted as No Trespassing when the cache was originally placed.

In any case, No Trespassing means No Trespassing.

The sign has been there since at least 2008.

    How did you determine that?

Too blurry to be definitive, but that's when Street View drove past the first time.

  4. Groundspeak needs to stop publishing power trails. They are giving caching a bad name.

As I've been saying since the first power trails started appearing, no good would come out of taking a low impact, low visibility activity and turning it into a high impact, high visibility one. And that's precisely what these PTs and most of the "geo art" have done.

I was pretty much a voice in the wilderness in the beginning. Glad to see that more and more people are starting see this nonsense for what it is, a threat to the long term viability of our game. We're already seeing the fallout from power caching in NJ with a new, draconian state parks policy and a total ban on some state lands.

If this is a poll, I'm casting my vote with you! Very well put.

When the "please don't place a cache every 600' just because you can" language was removed from the guidelines in 2009 I wrote here that it was the worst decision GS has ever made. I still stand by that statement.

The statement was removed from the guidelines on April 23rd, 2012.

  5. It appears the New Jersey has rolled Waymarking into their new geocaching permit policy regarding state lands.

The following are some excerpts of this document: http://www.state.nj...._final_form.pdf

    SUBJECT:

Geocaching, Waymarking and other Global Positioning System (GPS)-based Recreational activities (collectively reffered to as Geocaching in this policy document) in New Jersey State Parks, Forests, Recreation Areas, Historic Sites and Monuments (collectively "parks").

    ...

    DEFINITIONS:

    ...

Waymark or Virtual - A Virtual Cache is about discovering a location rather than a container. The requirements for logging a Virtual Cache may vary -- you may be required to answer a question about the location, take a picture, complete a task, etc. In any case, you must visit the coordinates before you can post your log.

    ...

    GUIDELINES:

    ...

Failure to comply with this policy directive will result in the revocation of effective geocaching permits and online cache/waymark listings. Continues failure to comply with these guidelines will prevent the issuance of any further permits to the non-compliant group or individual.

If geocaching or Waymarking activities as a whole are found to have a negative impact on park resources of if safety becomes an issue in geocache/waymark searches, the Park Superintendent/Area Manager or designee may ban geocaching from certain areas or from the entire park.

The Park Superintendent/Area Manager or designee will determine the appropriate number of manageable caches and waymarks at each location.

  6. Elyob,

I offer you the same thing... Take the distant photo... blow it up... And tell me how I could have that low resolution photo, produced a high resolution like the close up.

Please, show me how that is possible. I would love to learn how to that, I got so many old photos I would love to enhance the quality of.

What I find pathetic is that you're lying over a simple waymark submission just to get around a category's rules

Even though you pretty much admit that your second photo was ruined by the sun and you didn't want to go back to the site to get a replacement.

    http://www.Waymarkin...tue_Columbia_SC

No worries, it got declined by the group owner because the 2nd photo I took the sun completely blinded the statue (so I didn't submit it) and he's strict that it must be 2 photos with no exceptions, although this is 35 miles from my house, first time any waymark of mine ever got declined. Oh well.....

Since this topic was closed, I'm starting a new one.

How did the owner manage to get this moved and enabled?

I thought it was explained quite clearly in the quote above and in the links you provided. There were special circumstances.

Why are you bringing this back? Do you have a grandfathered cache you want to move or know of one?

Nope, no vested interests, just curiosity.

I just figured since it is such an exceptionally rare event, only the second known time since the grandfathering of webcam caches, that it warranted a forum discussion.

In the previous example the webcam never left it's local park and there was a fundraising event to replace the broken cam.

Here we have a cam that the owner has been allowing false finds on for over a year. The camera has not been replaced/fixed. There was no fundraising push. A different cam, at a different train station, 1/2mi away was adopted as the cache.

Just wondering what special circumstances compelled Groundspeak to make their second ever exception.

Webcams, like virtuals, are frozen to coordinate updates. That's because it's a grandfathered cache type. Once the webcam is gone from the spot, the cache should be gone with it.I am aware of just one exception made over the years since 2005 when webcams became a grandfathered cache type.

  9. One of the caches near me has been muggled, I really like the placement of this cache and the stealth it would require to obtain and I want to replace it even though it is not my cache.

I have emailed the owner of this cache but they haven't been active for a long time so I've not got a reply

What do people think I should do?

I have a cache sat on my desk waiting for me to decide and I am hoping to sneak out to place it whilst it is dark

I'd recommend writing up a new listing using the current coordinates of the existing cache. This way you are effectively reserving the location for future placement. Then posting a Needs Archive on the existing cache. As soon as the cache gets archived. Place your own container and submit your new listing.

Don't replace the cache for an inactive owner. It'll only continue to have unaddressed problems in the future.
