  1. It may not be their job to work with property owners, but perhaps it would be better if it was in some cases. Although the onus for getting permission is on cache owners, Groundspeak has gotten big enough that it would be nice if the public relations department worked with major land owners and took the weight off of the shoulders of geocachers. They likely could do much more with permission in national and state parks, as well as utility companies an large businesses, in contrast to ordinary geocachers who may have no experience and have to make contact in their spare time.
  2. The sad part is seeing all of the vandalism. Cant really appreciate anything without wondering about all of the morons who visit en masse. The xxx story is an idiots tale that doesn't get better with age, and doesn't become true by having more people tell it. Why can't they do something sensible like airbrushing a picture of Elvis on Nicolas Cage's empty tomb?
  3. Now I remember. This virtual was a topic of discussion about 10 years ago as people were concerned about vandalism. The CO edited the page at the time although older pics remain. With a tour guide requirement now, it likely will get archived.
  4. You mean this one http://coord.info/GCGFHX But you already knew that. It sure doesn't help that the cache page instructs visitors to make virtual x's on the tomb, while the article complains about the actual ones. Can't say that any geocachers did it, but after 2000 visitors you never know..
  5. So they often get lost, have no goals, get taken for a ride and kidnapped after staying in sleazy motels while getting logged by multiple people who post compromising photos of them on the net. Sounds pretty wild.
  6. Is that that Tucson guy? Not necessarily a Geocaching puzzle person. The website I run gets many o' hack attempts daily, usually from Chinese IP addresses. Today isn't over, so 12 yesterday, for example. What the heck are they trying to do? Gotta create a fake back door and make them believe that they got in. Then monitor them, or give them fake info, or redirect them to a malicious virus.
  7. It's likely that the geocaches are able to be adopted, as the adoption restriction is likely based upon the icon. However that might change if someone posts a thread about it in the main forums and a Lackey happens to notice it ..
  8. A nice idea would be to have a retirement event and declare you are finished for good. Give a variety of excuses and list the event as being 4 hours long. After an hour and a half arrange for someone to list and publish several caches nearby. Run out and find them and don't return. Write an apology on the event page, saying that something came up and go back to finding caches as normal. Three months later hold another retirement event and explain that because the last one was cut short, this one will be for real. Then do it again. And again. And again. Write a longer and more detailed apology at each one to try to make it sound sincere. After it gets old have a sock puppet ready to thoroughly criticize you and complain about the fakery. Make it bitter enough that nobody suspects anything. Then announce that "this is it" and you've "had enough" and archive several hides, and adopt a few out, saying that it was no joke and you were just putting it off. Next hide a milestone cache under the sock account, celebrating the sock's 100th find, and post a picture on the page of you holding a 100th find card. Then go out and simply resume caching like normal..
  9. I'd rather hear a tale about a fairy godmother getting fired from her executive position at Cracker Barrel and getting a job with the utility company.
  10. Great. Looks like I'll have to scale a tower about 30' and chain up an ammo can with the word Opencache written in tiny lettering on the side to see what happens..
  11. Seriously? Are we really talking about the extreme dangers of glitter inhalation? Isn't it enough just to say it's a stupid and juvenile prank? No. Send me your physical address, and I'll be more than happy enough to mail you a small packet detailing the dangers.
  12. Considering that someone may inhale the glitter and get it stuck in their lungs, or inadvertently get into their eyes causing cornea damage, as well as littering, then yes, it's unethical. Why would you want to do that to someone you don't know, and especially without being there to see it?
  13. Another bloody spawn of Satan? http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=239484&st=0 http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=281651&st=0
  14. I suppose it's a overreaction due to someone in the power company. A few years ago the utility company around here clear cut every tree within 100 feet of the power lines. I suppose someone thought that they were a terrorist target and that the area was safer open. Banning geocaches seems to be even more of a hysterical reaction to this. I'm guessing that it's just one power company in particular that's involved.
  15. What's to address? Take the people out, and it's just some boarded up buildings. A lot of people would take picture of the oh-so-chic urban decay and thank the OP for bringing them to this spot before the buildings were gone. It's all fine and dandy to deny it now, but the picture was chosen for a reason - and it wasn't the garbage. Really? You certainly have a selective imagination. How about imagining getting stuck from a discarded needle and then running to the doctor to be tested for hepatitis B, C, and a few other diseases, as well as returning 3 months later for an HIV test?
  16. Might not be to your taste, but a lot of people like exploring urban decay. Seems natural that some urbex types would hide geocaches in the places that interest them. For a girl who likes to try to prove a point you sure ignored the point. Again. On purpose. You called us racist because according to you, some of us call an area sketchy because there are non whites there and I don't appreciate it. I called it sketchy because of the dilapidated buildings and garbage strewn about NOT because of the people. I personally live in a very flavorful neighborhood, have lived in several others, and prefer it that way, thank you very much. Can't reason with the unreasonable. I'm out. Oh yes, the heaps and heaps of garbage. Right. Heavens to betsy, a styrofoam cup and a couple of plastic bags. Good thing I brought my heavy work boots or I might not survive. That still doesn't address the fact that you brought race into the picture and said that was the reason that we didn't like the area. Yours was the first post that mentioned anything of the sort.
  17. Talking about crappy caches is hardly destructive, as it enlightens those who may not realize how lousy theirs are. What's destructive is trying to stop those from discussing it. Nobody is trying to have these hides removed, they only are commenting on them. Let's discuss the site's features you have mentioned a few times to filter out needles, condoms, and garbage. Sometimes you can read the logs to filter these caches out, but most often the logs simply say TFTC, thanks, or are a copy and paste variety.
  18. This is the very first post with any mention of race or color, so it's hard to determine what the heck you are referring to. But since you brought it up, there simply aren't many geocaches hidden in minority areas, as minorities don't geocache as much as white people. The nasty hides that I have found were in areas that have a sizable white population, although skin color has nothing to do with it. Finding needles, bum liquor bottles, crack baggies, condoms and garbage is what I would consider a nasty area. Did you see the picture that was posted? I noticed several crumbling, boarded up buildings with broken glass hanging out of the window panes, with one appearing to be missing part of the roof. Don't know why you focused on race, as that makes no difference with that in the background. Being that there are kids playing, it likely is a safe area, but yet nasty enough to ask the question. Why is there a cache here?

  20. It's an acronym. It stands for Yet Another Yanker.
