  1. Tech + Nature T-shirts from the Groundspeak store. Mama pirate (acting as Santa) picked up one for each of us. The new GPS is in the works too, but Santa's waiting until tax return season.
  2. When asked where she would like to place a geocache, our oldest (5) responded "in our yard". For many of the reasons others have listed (neighbors, disturbances etc) we decided against it. However, we do have a city park within a block or so of our house, and have thought about placing a micro there. We could sit in our front yard and watch people search. Could be fun.
  3. Yes, it is addictive, but believe it or not, there are a few who can resist the temptation. I got a co-worker interested enough to go out and find a couple caches in our area, and he hasn't been back at it since. So I guess there are some folks out there who aren't as susceptible as the rest of us.
  4. I guess I should have added that we have 3 youngsters 5 and under, so winter caching (especially of the snow shoeing, folding shovel sort) is pretty much out. I've been thinking about where and when to place our first cache, and looking at caches that will be available in the spring. Also looking at caches that are available in the winter. Thanks for the advice Jennifer and Dean, we've looked at Missoula caches for when we're in the area. (Signal added by the oldest little pirate)
  5. So what do you do when the mercury is hovering below zero and/or the next cache you REALLY want to find is under 3 feet of snow. Other than dreaming of spring and praying for a little global warming, what do you do to maintain your caching sanity?
  6. The latest weather I've seen says it's supposed to clear up for the weekend! So get out there this weekend Band of Brothers, because next week is looking really sh....nasty!
  7. It depends on where you are. Although really new to geocaching, I've already looked at the caches here in SW Montana, and know there are tons of very cool locations still open to place caches. Mountain lakes, old lookout sites, near ghost towns and other places of historical significance (Lewis and Clark sites). You could just be in a cache dense area. An urban area perhaps? We're hoping to place a couple soon, and have some pretty awesome (in my opinion) locations picked out.
  8. A family of new Geocachers in Dillon. We moved here about a year ago, and really love the area. Not alot of caches in our area, but we're hoping to fix that. (Along with some co-workers whom I've gotten hooked on caching)
  9. It's looking good for placing my cache in the state park in Montana. I've talked with the manager again, and he seems very receptive. We've scheduled a meeting so that I can show him my cache, and the location I'd like to place it. We'll also have the park historian along to ensure I don't want to place it in a sensitive area. The only down side is that between the two of us, our schedules don't match up until the 25th of June. I guess the moral to this story is to keep trying, and be willing to bend over backwards to assure the managers that our intentions are good.
  10. I recently talked to the park manager at a state park here in Montana. His first reaction was to say no because "we don't allow digging at the park". When I explained to him that there's no digging involved, and that the cache would be in an out of the way area, he seemed much more receptive. He had me email a proposal to him, explaining where and why I would like to place the cache. I'm hopeful that things will turn out. I'll keep you posted, for those of you in or planning to visit Montana.
  11. Tomorrow is our first Geo event. We are doing this as a family outing. There are five of us, mom, dad, and three girls. An almost 5 yr old, an almost 2 yr old, and an almost 1 yr old. We are all very excited to be doing this and can't wait to see what the future holds!! We loved the birthday idea also. Our oldest turns five this month and if she enjoys the "treasure hunt" tomorrow then we might do that!! We have taken our children all out on "expeditions" since they were born. Whether it be hiking, caving, searching for sunstones in OR, or just out and about. Having a backpack and/or a wrap is a major have to have. Our oldest loves to go caving!! Just give her a flashlight and she is off and running looking for Benny the Bat on the ceiling!! If you know anything about Bear in the Big Blue House I am sure you know who I am talking about. Can't wait to write again and tell how it went!! The MTGeoPirates
