  1. Not all USGS disks are in the NGS database. The following link to Topozone shows many USGS disks along Pine Flat Rd indicated by the letters BM Pine Flat Rd That said, a couple of PIDs come up in a NGS radial search in that area, one matching your desc - JT1952. This mark does not have a datasheet because the NGS states that there is no geodetic control for it. Maybe some other forum member could chime in as to why it carries the mark. Here are other marks in that area from GC.com. I see you have found some others over there. Brendan
  2. What you have found is the azimuth mark. The description is bit sketchy but per the 1969 recovery note, a new RM 2 and azimuth was set (maybe RM 1 in the box score since there is no distance for it) thus the stamping 'RANDALL AZIMUTH MARK 1969'. Standing at the azimuth mark, you should follow an azimuth of 281 40" to get to the station. RM 2 from 1969 should be north of the road and might still be there. Also, the 1992 desc appears to be a partial copy of the original desc. I agree, though, that 259 should put the RM WSW of the station, but, I believe the azimuths were measured from the RMs - mathmatically, the distances all seem to work. From the current NGS sheet STATION RECOVERY (2003) OK0603 OK0603'RECOVERY NOTE BY INDIVIDUAL CONTRIBUTORS 2003 (KB) OK0603'MARK REMOVED DURING EXCAVATION FOR A NEW DRIVEWAY IN AREA. Brendan
  3. Just curious - if the intersection stations have no real value anymore, why don't they just purge them whether they exist or not? Thanks, Brendan
  4. When I did cadastral mapping for Cook county here in Illinois, a good portion of the changes were 1 inch shifts for fence line disputes. Brendan
  5. It shows up on the topo http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=39.788...3&layer=DRG You can log it at Waymarking.com in the US Benchmark category. Brendan
  6. Thanks for the responses. True - it is only esoteric - but sometimes I like to be that way I guess it just bugs me a bit that I can't find exactly what I want. Good idea - I guess I wiill just do that. Brendan
  7. Does anybody know where (in the US) to get a 100-200M open reel tape measure? All I can find are the ones with front side US and the back side metric. I can live with that kind, but would prefer to find one with the front side metric. Thanks, Brendan
  8. Good job. Its nice when a find comes together like that. Brendan
  9. So you won't do anything unless it is counted? Does this include listening to music, scenic drives, watching a favorite TV show, etc? Brendan
  10. That's how I got into it. It is far more interesting than GC. I GC as a side activity to hiking/walking in our local forest preserves. I benchmark for the challenge, the history, and all the things the previous posters said. Brendan
  11. Oddly enough, this http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php...=141741&hl= topic concerns another type marker I found just outside Fairmont cemetary. I wonder if they are related? Brendan
  12. That's a good call - some research is in order. Brendan
  13. Thanks. It is actually on a peak 50' higher than and 300' from the road on forest preserve property. The forest preserve uses standard ROW markers similar (but shorter) to the ones you showed. It has a triangle on the top surrounding a hole as though it was used for triangulation. Brendan
  14. I changed the descr to concrete. I don't know why I thought it was stone. Argonne used to be located in these woods about a half mile SSW. Brendan
  15. I have created a rudimentary perl script as well to clean up the files. Mine outputs html. sample code I load these on my PDA when I go out. Brendan
  16. Found this one a while ago. Any idea what it is? Cook Cty Monument Brendan
  17. What is the difference? Assuming they all use the same satellite signal, what do you get for the extra money? Curiuos minds want to know. Brendan
  18. Where do they get the adjusted coords? Did they find and measure them but not log them? Brendan
  19. Have the same problem with the highest in IL, LD0363. Unless the railroad has been converted to a roller coaster. Brendan
  20. $7 for plans on how to hollow out a log??? Brendan
  21. Hi John! Yeah, the snow probably won't stop me from searching, all the benchmarks will have to be on the side of a snowmobile trail, though! Thats about the only thing I do during the winter! I dunno Patty, Astro has a point...it would be good story! How fun would it be if I find a benchmark on my own ahead of time, and then go hide the marriage license there or something! lol...then SHE has to go find it before we can get married!! Yeah, your right...probably not too smart. LOL Go after this one EZ4741 on your wedding day! Brendan
  22. I know the feeling. I stop and look at any stick with a flag on it now. They seem to be mostly for pipelines and buried cable, though.
  23. Hey! I was going to harvest that area! Just kidding. A friend of mine works down there at ISU. Good hunting. Brendan
