  1. USAF for four years. My grandfather was in the Army in WWI and my father was in the army in WWII. So, when Vietnam came along, I went along. Loved the people and loved the airplanes (C141s and C5s), just didn't like what went with it during that time in our history. The best part is that my son gets to break the tradition of going to war. So, to the rest of the vets who helped make that possible, especially those who didn't make it home ... thanks. 2. Yep, we made it to Lincoln this afternoon. Had a great time wandering around downtown and hitting bsmalley caches. Carmelcorn from the local store was an extra plus. Thanks for replacing both caches. We both really liked &quotIn Plain Sight&quot. It was worth the trip ... made us both smile. Thanks ... will log it tomorrow. By the way, worked it so that &quotIn Plain Sight&quot was my number 400 cache find. Jeepster - We did not inherit the land from our parents; we are borrowing it from our children.
  3. Yep, got mine and they were too small also. No problem, as I am confident that Brad will correct the problem. The clarity is fantastic ... I'm going to throw out my Belkin covers. Wanted to share something that you might want to try. I messed around with one of the extras from Brad trying to get it installed without any air bubbles. I'm reasonably good with my hands, but I couldn't get it installed without an air bubble or two. Same problem with other covers also. So, I tried something we do when covering model airplanes with monocoat. I sprayed the screen lightly with a fine mist of water ... lightly is the operative word. Then I peeled off the entire screen protector and applied it to the screen. With a light mist of water on the screen, I could move the screen protector around that little bit that is necessary to get it just right. Then I used a squeegee to move the water out from the middle of the screen towards the edge; and ultimately, out from under the protector. Wiped the screen clean and found I had a perfect application. Not a single bubble!!! Jeepster - We did not inherit the land from our parents; we are borrowing it from our children.
  4. I've been very fortunate to be able to geocache in an assortment of different states since discovering this hobby for Christmas. I love the caches hidden in the mountains of Arizona ... and, some of their urban caches are really very challenging. The Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan caches are fun, but they’re very similar in difficulty and terrain. The Chicago cachers seem to work extra hard at making the actual find very difficult. But, the absolute best cache I've completed is right here in my backyard. The Journal is rcharlier's creation of a lifetime for a geocacher who likes to hike and solve puzzles. St. Louis and Chicago have so many caches that this puzzle, hidden half way between the two cities, seems to get overlooked. It's a theme hunt, with the theme centering on an old family chest which was left behind in the 1800s. The write-up on geocaching.com doesn't give one a clue to the complexness of this puzzle. I don't want to give anything away, but I’ll tell you that it is a multi- within a multi-; which simply challenges you to stretch your physical and mental abilities. No, you don't have to be an Olympic endurance runner nor a PhD candidate. But, you've got to have a great big dollop of perseverance (stubbornness finally pays off). You can't look up the answers to the puzzles on the internet nor in the library ... you've got to do your own cogitating. To give you an idea of rcharlier's dedication to the theme and to making this a memorable cache hunt; the prize for the first finder was an 1879 silver dollar ... with the second finder scoring an 1899 silver dollar. The original clues were all engraved on brass plaques … but, since they tended to tarnish, he’s replaced them with something more permanent. So, St. Louis and Chicago cachers, you’re really missing a great experience if you don’t try this one. Jeepster - We did not inherit the land from our parents; we are borrowing it from our children.

Will, I'll just have to think up another excuse. Jeepster - We did not inherit the land from our parents; we are borrowing it from our children.

  8. quote:Originally posted by bsmalley:haven't yet decided if I will replace it Now you're starting to hide like Markwell ... get a guy's interest up, archieve the cache and then leave it dangling there in front of his face. He archieved his Quasimodo's Quandary cache back in March, right after we first got started. And, left it archieved all summer ... right up until last week. But, even then, you can see by my posting that Markwell still doesn't really want to let others play with his toys. Would you think about rehiding it for one day? I would love to come down and find it on Sunday afternoon. You might have to leave it up a little longer for Walkin Stick though ... he is getting a little old and slow you know. Please ... 9. bsmally, thanks for the compliments on the urban caches (micros). I sincerely appreciate it. I enjoy the caches that really tweak our noses (my wife is with me about 80% of the time) and make us think. It's great to know that others enjoy that type of challenge also. I've got a couple more planned ... just searching for the right location. &quotThe Big U&quot (CYBret has completed it) in Champaign is also a great Urban Cache ... fun challenge at home if you like studying encryption methods … and a fun puzzle when you get to the site, especially if you visit on a Saturday like we did. Spyderuser - in the Chicago area - has an assortment of Cigar Tube caches that are non-urban micro caches. Actually, I think they are idiot magnets ... only an idiot would go looking for a cigar tube in the woods ... that's why I've located all of them. Well, all but one ... &quotGone Fishin&quot might be AWOL … I'm waiting on a reading from Spyderuser. As to geocaching in the Springfield area ... I've been meaning to get there. But, family travels and Markwell's new five star cache have managed to distracted our attention. Chicago has sooooo many caches, it's no wonder their local cachers don't leave the area. I'm extremely jealous. However, Markwell managed to beat up on us pretty badly yesterday, so maybe a visit to a friendlier area is in order. BTW, CYBret, congratulations on the new addition. 10. I like your letter. It's a neat introduction. What I did for the last two places, where I asked and received permission to hide caches, was print off the geocaching.com's introduction pages. I used that and a face-to-face conversation to interest the folks in letting me on their property. No, the last two places are not public, they were private business properties. But, I've asked and received permission for two public places also. I've got permission for more places then I'm currently using. For the next cache site I'll use a cover letter similar to yours, some of geocaching.com's printouts, and a sample geocache log page all assembled in a binder. With that type of approach, I can't think of anyone here in the Midwest who would turn me down. Jeepster - Road kill on the information highway ...
  11. quote: I'll take everything south of I-80 and east of the Mississippi. It's all deserted farmland anyway. Markwell, with all due respect, you can't really mean that! After all, you haven't even conquered The Journal yet. How can you speak and think soooo loooowly of a major portion of this fine state, when such a small portion of it (870 acres) has kept folks from the city of &quotwind&quot at bay for the last half year. 12. 211 within 100 miles of the heartland of Illinois. That's why I now have to play in Markwell's backyard. Please don't think I'm complaining about the number of caches in the middle of Illinois. I traveled through North Dakota this past summer when the cache count in that state was 12. It has now more than doubled to 29. Never will you catch me complaining about Illinois. 13. Dave and Jamie gave you good advice. The instructions actually tell you to load it twice ... if you're starting with older firmware. I've upgraded three units with great success ... yep, did it a second time on two of them. Jeepster - Road kill on the information highway ...

  15. Guys really hate to stop and ask for directions ... but, here is what I found on the &quotRead about EasyGPS&quot page: &quotWhen you are logged in, a dialog box will come up asking you to open the file or save it. Choose open.. There may be several dialog boxes asking you whether to save or open the file. Keep choosing open ...&quot I found that if you want to save the file to your hard drive, then first click on the &quotOPEN THIS FILE FROM ITS CURRENT LOCATION&quot option. Then, and only then, click on the &quotSAVE THIS FILE TO DISK&quot option. The software will then ask you where you want to save the file. Works like a charm. This failure to read the instructions ought to give me a few points towards my village idiot award. Jeepster - Road kill on the information highway ...
  16. Thanks for the input Coach Potato. Here's what I found. If you start EasyGPS and try to open the file you downloaded (not the one in temp int. files) does it work?. ... Nope, I get an error message. In the folder if you list by details what is the type of the loc file? (it should be 'Topographix Data File'). ... It is a .loc file with 'TopoGrafix Data File' showing in the 'Type' column. OH, I just thought of what it may be. IIRC, in Win98 if you have windows explorer set to hide extensions then you can't change them in the 'save as' dialog box.. ... No, the extensions are set up to show. So IE automatically adds .asp as an extension to whatever you type in as a file name in the 'save as' box. So you may actually be saving the file as 'geocaching[#].loc.asp' (you just have .asp hidden). If the type of file in the detail list in windows explorer isn't 'Topographix Data File' this could be what's happening. ... When I use file properties, I don't see a .asp extension after the file.loc label. Jeepster - Road kill on the information highway ...

  19. Once again, please ... someone has to have a clue as to my problem. I'm one of those folks who fall into the computer challenged catagory and need all the computer help I can get. Since I can download a file correctly on my work computer - and it doesn't have any EasyGPS software installed - it seems like it is in my operating system or in my internet connection. I'm using Windows 98 and have a phoneline connection to the AT&T internet service. Jeepster - Road kill on the information highway ...
  20. I'm having trouble with the downloading of an EasyGPS file from geocaching.com. It used to work okay ... now it doesn't. When I click on the download icon at the bottom of the geocache page, I get a Save This File to Disk prompt. When I hit the next promt is the Save As prompt. It wants to save it as an HTML file. So, I then click on All Files, type in an appropriate name with the .loc suffex and hit . It looks good at this point. But, when I go to the folder and click on the file (which is in the 35kb size range) I get an error message. If I do a find on my C-drive for all files created in the last day. I'll find a geocaching[#].loc file in the Windows/Temporary Internet Files folder which I can double click on and which will then come up in EasyGPS ... this file is usually about 1 or 2kb in size. I can then save that file to a regular folder and everything is okay. Any suggestions? Jeepster - Road kill on the information highway ...
  21. Changing the date on one of the posts for Cachiversary seemed to work. I now show the cache found on one day and the rock found on the next. I then resubmitted the update request. Psst, don't tell Walkin Stick that this method works. Now, lets see. If I create my own virtual cache site. And, then log a find a day for the next two years I'll be able to catch BruceS. Naw, that's way too much like work. Dan, thanks again for not only the update feature, but all of your hard work on the entire site. Jeepster - Road kill on the information highway ...
  22. Dan, Oh, sure. With Walkin Stick on a three week cross country geocaching vacation, you jump right on straightening out my one and only double log on the leader board. What a fine day this is ... his numbers are going up and mine are going down. Darn ... darn ... darn. Now if I can just figure out how to get Cachiversary to show up twice. If I can figure out how to make it happen, I'm not going to tell Walkin Stick that's for sure. Seriously Dan, thanks for the update feature. Jeepster - Road kill on the information highway ...
  23. I tried updating a missing log on one of Markwell's caches ... Cachiversary 1: Forget-Me-Nots. He set up a double find under the same ID number ... one the cache and two a carved rock. The update must check for and weed out double requests. Maybe if I change the date on one it'll work. Also, you're going to hate this ... how do we get a double count off the leader board? I hate to slip from 18th to 24th in North Dakota ... but, one of my three finds there is counted twice. Just think, with 13 finds you could be first in North Dakota. Trust me, I'll never complain about how few caches we've got in mid-Illinois again. Jeepster - Road kill on the information highway ...
  24. Let me tag on to Mudfrog's thread. I bought several travel bugs and gave two away as gifts. Yep, one of the guys threw the package (and activation code) away. Now it's useless. How do I get a new activation code? I've e-mailed Jeremy several times over the last two months ... but nothing. He's always been great about responding to other e-mails.
