  1. Thanks cache people. I was encouraged by your replies and even had a giggle. Plus I felt a lot better after a good meal and a hot bath! My doggie was cross with me because I was getting annoyed with her as she kept barking whilst I was trying to find the cache, but today she says "It's just walkies with some added fun" (am I totally barking??) so what with that and your encouargement I will carry on, and the cross-stitch can wait...I've been doing the same one for 7 years Keep getting distracted! Also on a positive note, one of the best days of 2005 was doing part 2 of Lord of the Rings Quest for the Ring of power, as I overcame my fear of wading through thigh deep water in the dark! Off to Hampshire next weekend to see my bro, and already have already told him I want to introduce him to geocaching - he already has a gps and is looking forward to it - so I can't disappoint him, can I?
  2. I seem to be logging DNF's far more often than finds at the moment. Maybe I am doing something wrong? It's not getting to the location, it's finding that plastic box once there! I have found a few, granted, but when I spend an hour looking under every root and going through every clump of grass with a stick, I wonder how can I possibly be missing it Any hints please? Or should I just go back to cross-stitch?
  3. Thank you - I have looked up the link to Missing Travel Bug and found the useful hint of using the copy tag and sending out another bug in the missing bug's stead. I will give my bug a few months then send out a replacement!
  4. Wow - use the copy tag or make a replacement tag - I never thought of that! I will have to try and find another little alligator to replace Cajun gator if she doesn't turn up in a few months. Good hints - thanks.
  5. Righty-ho then...I'll email them at respectable intervals. Am I right in thinking that if they had stuck it in a cache somewhere without logging it, then someone else fiding it will probably log the find, IF they take it to move on? I suppose a bug could take a while to be moved on in any case, so I shouldn't write it off for a long time yet. Ho-hum.
  6. Mental note to myself - don't put smelly candles in the loft. Or garage. Or caches.
  7. Okay,, thanks guys. I'll email them again and then just hope Cajun Gator turns up one day...
  8. my travel bug Cajun Gator set out on 31 May and apparently the Jungle Warriors now have had her since 5/06/05. I have already sent one email politely asking if she is moving on but have not had a reply. How much does one chase up one's travel bug? What should I do next? Rose Thorn
  9. That's great - well done. It really is worthwhile. I spent a long time looking for one cache on two occasions, and it was amazing how many bottles, plastic bags etc were in the undergrowth, so managed to fill a couple of carrier bags full and dispose of them properly. If only people could be educated not to drop it in the first place...!
  10. Hmmm - I have to say, I think cars are overused and relied upon too much by young people in particular. I would like to think that geocaching could be an environmentally friendly activity. I intend to use my bike and shank's pony as much as possible to reach caches, being a tree-hugging eco-friendly type person! I wouldn't mind being charged per road mile for my car if I thought it would help the envirnment. Nor would I mind being tracked, as I am not invovled in illegal activities and do not break the speed limit, being concerned to try and reduce death and injury on the roads. Well, those are my personal views and I don't expect many people to agree with my point of view. The system will probably never be introduced anyway as too many people will complain that it infringes their liberty and is against their human rights. The rights of other creatures on the planet and of people maimed and killed by car drivers are given no consideration except by those who are directly involved with the victims
  11. Having attempted cycling with my newly acquired gps round my neck, and having found the same to be problematic, I am already looking at the idea of a handlebar mount or a carry case with a velcro handlebar mount. This may seem like a daft question, but the carry cases I have looked at (online) have opaque coverings over where the arial is located - ermm, doesn't this affect the signal? I certainly found that my gps lost the signal when I had my cagoule zipped up over it in torrential rain. And if I went for a handlebar mount, with no case, would the gps withstand the inevitable Lakeland/Lancashire rain that I will no doubt encounter?
  12. I am a happy bunny now - I got an etrex legend for my birthday and have really enjoyed learning how to use it and having a go at finding things! When we went for a walk with my children and my nephew I entered waypoints for lots of land features and they had fun using the gps to find them. Just have to make sure I don't forget how to use map and compass now!
  13. Thanks very much, that will give me a start
  14. Hi, another question from a dumb newbie If this issue is already discussed in another thread please point me in the right direction as I have read through lots of posts but not quite found what I was looking for... If no, then my question is "how do you find who owns/manages a piece of land"? Do you find the nearest farm for example, and risk your ankles by going up and knocking on the door (sheepdogs, don't you just love'em!) as I did once trying to navigate a right of way over farmland (got told that the "Major's bulls were running in the field but go ahead" if I "wanted to take a chance"...I didn't.) Or ask the council? Or search the land registry which involves a fee? I have lots of ideas for placing caches but need to get permission first of course, so any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks Rose
  15. Hi - just looking to buy my first GPS and it will be second hand I think - how does the Magellan Explorist 300 compare with the Extrex Legend? Any thoughts please?
  16. That's a great idea. I will suggest that on the UK forum, and see what response it gets. Every little helps doesn't it?
  17. I'm a newbie and just finding my way around the forums - thank you to MarkandLynn for pointing me in the direction of the UK forum - here is a message I posted on the US Forum I think the CITO idea is a very good one. I plan to look for some litter to pick up every time I vist a cache. If everyone did this, we could try and keep our environment clean and safe. All it needs is a couple of strong plastic bags (recycled plastic?!) to put it in. I wonder if fellow Brits will commit to doing this? Where I live there is a disgraceful amount of litter - I think the kids round here (Lancashire) were never taught by their mums/moms to put litter into a bin, instead they just chuck it where they like.mad.gif Even in nature reserves you find beer and Coke cans lying in the trees, and plastic bags all along the river banks. I sincerely hope Geocachers would never be guilty of such a thing. So keep picking up the trash! Rose_Thorn

  19. Okay, thank you, I think I get it now
  20. Thanks very much folks. I will check out that web site.
  21. Hi - new to geocaching and wondering about benchmarks - I used to look for benchmarks years ago when I learned to read OS maps. I know a few in my area. Do people in the UK bother looking for them? Can they be logged on the geocaching site? I just find them quite interesting as I love all things to do with maps. Maybe I could just keep my own log? Any thoughts on the topic would be welcome.
  22. Hi, I only just started geocaching recently and was really excited by the travel bug idea. I have sussed out a lot about them by reading posts and stuff on the site, but please could someone explain what it means when someone refers to a "cemetery" cache? And what is the idea behind "grabbing"? I don't understand that one at all, sorry!
