  1. I found a hiking patch for the trail over the "divide". It's called the Divide Traverse Trail Patch. I bought one for my pack.

Anybody know of any other cool patches like this? If so, where?

I found this one when I was doing a search for the Continental Divide and the Mummy range.

  3. icon_rolleyes.gif Hey! Thanks! I was thinking about trading in my meri-plat for the meri-color but I really like the 3-axis compass and the thermometer and barometer. I just re-orient the compass for magnetic north and it works well. We had a storm roll thru the other night and I watched the pressure drop. Pretty interesting stuff. I'll think I will keep the meri-plat.

    Thanks again y'all!

  4. icon_wink.gif I have to agree with DUANT. I have had alot of gps units and the Meridian series is very adaptable because of the SD card. Although the Garmin handhelds are small, The Meridians aren't that much bigger and the screen is larger and easy to read. You can load different maps on SD cards and just switch them instead of downloading each time.

Also as another plug for Magellan, I tried to upload the ver 4.06 OS Software and hosed up my flash memory (I have done this before and I became careless) So I had to send it back to Magellan. The customer service rep was great and the I got the unit back after Two days!--Great turnaround. Plus the sent me a canvass carring case,an extra data cable,a new manual and another cd of the manual. I didn't need them but it was a very pleasant surprise.

I also put a screen protector on and that has been very useful.

  5. icon_smile.gifI like the Magellan Meridian Series. I have a platinum and really like it. I have had a garmin etrex, a magellan 310, a lowrance globalmap 100, a magellan meridian green and the platinum. I almost got a sportrak but i heard they are having a problem with the casing cracking. Plus the expandable memory, the electronic compass and the barometer on the platinum are fun.
  6. I really like my magellan meridian platinum. I've tried garmin etrex, lowrance globalmap 100, magellan 310, and a magellan meridian. I find that the Meridian is not as bulky as the as the globalmap 100 (although a fine unit) and easier to operate than the Garmin etrex (buttons on the side are hard to operate with gloves) and more accurate than the Magellan 310 because neither of the above gps units have WAAS except for the Meridian Series.

Also the SD card slot enables you to load different maps onto the card(s) and plug them into the Meridian Without much hassle. They say it floats but I won't willingly take them up on it. For my money, it's the Meridian series. icon_rolleyes.gif

  7. I bought a Meridian GPS from buydesigns7 on e-bay for a great price. I've tried Lowrance, Garmin and Magellan. My low end Magellan (310) aquired a lock and stayed with it better than my Lowrance globalmap 100. My Garmin was fickle. The Magellan Meridian works just great and with more accuracy than my old standby 310. I got the Mapsend software and I'm diggin it!

  8. I just bought a meridian from Cristo & Co. on ebay under the name of buydesign7. I got for $139.00 and I am really impressed. I noticed the sport trak series had a different design. I also found out that Magellan is discontinuing the sportrak (not the Pro or the Map) and discontinuing the Meridian (not the platnium, gold, etc) because it duplicates some of the other models..at least that is what two distributers told me...anyway look for deals.

  9. I always carry a compass when I'm in the woods and espically in unfamiliar territory. Once in Glacier National it kept my head together because what I thought was north wasn't and it was getting dark. Also you have to watch out because even though the GPSr's are fun, they will make you stupid......everyone should know how to use a compass.

  10. I started with a Magellan 310 and then moved on to a GlobalMap100. The GM100 is more accurate (it has one more digit place) but the 310 is so light and only uses two AA batteries, I still use it alot. Plus the 310 locks in pretty quickly and stays locked under tree cover where the GM100 loses lock and has to re-aquire. I believe that Magellan got it right with the 310. It's a great little unit and has the basics that work well for geocaching (if you round up or down). The GM100 has a ton of neat features. I use the map features and the cursor trail quite a bit. I am heading out to Estes Park soon and I can't wait to give it a real baptisim in Rocky Mountain National (if it's still there). I was going to sell the 310, but I'm having touble parting with it. Since I live on the plains of Kansas, I figure that both units have an equal chance for sat lock. -Sorry I blab so much-
