  1. I am sad to report that Rhode Island has lost its cherry. -WR
  2. While it may be correct to talk about Great Circle and geodesics and UTM, etc. But the real question is HOW DID THE HIDER FIGURE IT OUT. My guess: Unless they are known for doing something really funky with math, you could just average the two points and that's what they intended. Great point that MW makes. I have a cache that requires a midpoint to be solved. I used UTM calcs to hide the cache, but did not say that on the cache page. I provided enough of a spoiler that you could find the cache even if you averaged from the ddmm.mmm format. -WR
  3. Assuming you mean you can follow footprints, that doesn't work when going for FTF. This is from today's hunt, which took place during the storm the thread originator speaks of: The only tracks we could follow were from snowmobiles. -WR
  4. Gotta go with BS on this. If you simply and honestly describe your DNF, how can it be the WRONG thing to do? I once (or twice) searched long and hard trying for an FTF, only to find out that another experienced cacher tried and failed but didn't log his DNF. He emailed the owner instead, suggesting the coords might be wong. How rude! -WR

  6. I dunno. I have numbers smaller than 410. -WR
  7. Nice job on the speedup. -WR 2554 caches found. Avg. Difficulty = 1.86 Avg. Terrain = 1.82 Avg. Challenge = 2.11 618 hard caches found (24%)
  8. When trail running, we would often go 10-15 miles for NO cache. The woods were always full of other things for us to find. Sure, I now appreciate a cache at the end of a longish hike, but if there are no other stages, that leaves me free to explore willy-nilly. -WR
  9. I made Thanksgiving dinner YESTERDAY to acommodate some scheduling issues, so today we are off for some caching - on our way out the door right now!
  10. Fortunately, I've never had a wagon train hit one of my caches. In New England, we tend not to have the micro spew that attracts such types. I did recently have a couple of high-count out-of-region cachers log a couple of mine. Reputations being what they are, I will probably check to see if they both signed. If not, bye-bye online log. Simply, if I take the time to hide it, you take the time to sign it. -WR
  11. 1) Both, although my caches found outnumber my benchmarks found 2528 to 1010. 2) I log just with gc.com. -WR
  12. This summer I cruised from FL to the Bahamas with the kids. I managed to log six caches using a combination of taxis and feet. Here is the list: http://www.geocaching.com/bookmarks/view.a...80-eb5eba186951 As my teenagers are not big cachers, I didn't venture very far from downtown Nassau. -WR

  14. My ratio: 1270 / 2052 = 61.9% State, Country: Massachusetts, USA There are others in the area with HIGHER ratios than mine. -WR
  15. Just about a year ago, some drunk at a 4th of July party saw me dart into the woods. He called the cops and said I was trying to bomb the parade. He implicated some other stranger that had parked behind me. The SWAT team grabbed me as I returned to my car. I missed the fireworks while sitting in the town jail. -WR
  16. May I suggest you come to New England. As I TRIED to point out in a recent thread, my nearest 500 caches are 7% tradtional micros, and 27% multi's. We have puzzle caches galore, with some nasty ones to boot. The "average" cache takes you along a shaded forest trail, to a good-sized container. Plenty of opportunities to drop your yak in and paddle to the cache. Sure, it's mosquito and poison ivy season, but aren't you itchin' to find some cool caches? -WR
  17. Are you counting the kiss if it was only a picture? -WR
  18. Out-of-towners needing a quick drop can be crucial to keeping a bug hotel populated. Making yours a three-stage multi may be keeping many casual visitors away. -WR
  19. There is a cache here that required a waypoint projection, but your method wouldn't have worked . . . the distance was .85 miles. Why wouldn't his method have worked in your case? If .85 miles is too far to walk, you can drive. -WR
  20. The most dangerous part of geocaching is driving to the site. The most dangerous threat to your property is parking at the site. Don't let the media-hype over the rather rare stranger attacks in this country keep you from paying attention to the real threats. -WR
  21. Seeing as how my quotes around "lame" doesn't seem to having changed anyone's interpretation of the word, I'll rephrase. e.g. centered around downtown Harrisburg, we find: 205 traditional micros for a "tradmic" factor of 41% 68 multi's for a "multi" factor of 14% For the Pittsburgh area: 49 traditional micros for a "tradmic" factor of 10% 51 multi's for a "multi" factor of 10% -WR
  22. I first ran a pocket query to get the closest 500 caches. I then created a new query with its radius set to the distance out to cache #500. In that query, I set type to "traditional" and container type to "micro". I came up with thirty-five (35) caches, or about seven percent (7%). By comparison, there are one-hundred-thirty-five (135) multi's in that radius, for an anti-lame factor of twenty-seven percent (27%). Can't wait to hear about other locales. -WR
  23. No need to pass the GeoCoin my way. I have had SEVERAL of them pass through my hands already. Yes, they are the finest GeoCoins to have ever graced our fair planet, but geocaching is not about the swag, it is about the experience. By passing on each Team Fisur GeoCoin that I removed from a cache, I hope to have added the experience of handling one on to one or more additional cachers. I am the anti-collector. -WR
