  1. How about a separate favorite point category for trackables?  Perhaps earn one favorite point for every five trackables you place in a cache. The favorite point could only be earned/placed when putting a trackable in a cache.

This would improve the geocaching experience and encourage making unique trackable items.

    Just food for thought…..

  2. I respectively disagree. There is no compelling reason NOT to bring back web cams, IMO. To your point, we should also disallow and delete all uploaded photos for existing web cams as well??  Ridiculous IMO. Let’s take a step further and disallow uploading any photos for any icon type and delete all existing photos while we are at it.

You can take each icon on geocaching.com and argue all day about pros and cons and likely end up with only traditional ones at the end of the day.

Further, if Web Cams are so evil why have they only discontinued publishing new ones while grandfathering existing ones? Should we not archive all existing ones including all uploaded photos due to privacy concerns??

  3. Now that it has been removed by a couple of Aliens, how about putting a web cam cache there so we can capture its return?  My Alien contact said it was just going “up” for a bit to get some much needed repairs.  Just got that confirmed independently by Ancient Aliens, look for it on their next episode.

  4. I wish Adventure Labs were better integrated into geocaching.com. It is surprising how many geocachers know almost nothing about them. I just published one in Houston and have for the most part relied on word of mouth to spread the word about it.

    Some of my gripes are:

There is no way to be notified via email when one is published.

AL are not included in such areas as the last caches viewed, last caches found, etc. on geocaching.com.

You cannot apply a favorite point to a AL.

You cannot view any prior logs.

Those come to mind right away, sure there are more.

Seems like Adventure Labs would be more effective and enjoyed more if they were integrated in the same basic manner of other icons (for example Multis) within geocaching.com.

Any way, just my view, so express yours too.....

  5. I have not done many webcams, but did enjoy doing them. They have different attributes which make them fun in my opinion.  Fond memories of each one, cannot say that about endless LPCs and endless micros. Web cams are rare and that is part of the challenge. That said, web cams are not necessarily for everyone so if you are a naysayer don’t find them!  Can say that about lab caches, virtuals, etc too. Bringing some more web cams into play would help keep the game fresh and more fun, the same effect lab caches and virtuals have had. Just my opinion anyway, for better or worse.

  6. It has been a while since I developed an earthcache, but I remember there being a list of things you cannot do. Can someone point me to that list?

Two Earthcaches I am thinking about developing but want to know before I start doing the research/write up:

    1.  Flood control. There is a creek that has year around water in it. During heavy rains it fills up some lakes in a nature preserve. Once the water gets to a certain level it backflows into the creek. Water levels change about 15+ feet during this process, which happens several times a year.

2.. drainage basins - there is a smaller one where I live in Texas. I think you cannot do that but am unsure.

    Thanks!

    Percentage of favorites.

    Variety of cache types.

    Variety of container types.

    Variety of cache sizes.

    Variety of D/T ratings.

Anyone scoring high on those is highly likely to hide great caches.  Should focus on positive accomplishments not subjective behavior (response to DNFs, etc.) Just my opinion.

Focus on positive things that are quantifiable and weight each item within each category.

All of this discussion about response times to logs, etc is stupid in my opinion. There is no perfectly behaved cache owner that can be ascertained via an algorithm in my opinion.

My stance is that hat if you use the basic categories I previously outlined I would expect pretty good results.

  9. Maybe the way virtuals were awarded last year was flawed? What about hiders requesting a virtual reward instead of gc.com awarding them. From that pool you could then do a limited amount of awards. Hence, you would have cachers that really want to creat quality virtuals. Perhaps if necessary further limit the pool by an algorithm that made sense, such as % of favorites for one’s hidden caches, etc.

  10. It is a game. As a CO it is your decision to delete a log or not. Just plainly say so on the web page. If I were a webcam CO and someone posted a selfie, was from out of town and could not get the webcam to work right for some reason or another I would accept the smiley log that had a selfie. Just my opinion, would state something to that effect on the cache page write up.

GS needs to show some flexibility. Remember when photos could be required on earthcaches by COs, now they are not. The game is always evolving somewhat, hopefully for the better and not for worse.

I just think getting more legalestic and more “pc” does the game harm.  Again, my opinion.
