  1. Hi. I have selected "hide conversation" on messages to users on my computer version of the messages center on www.geocaching.com

However, all the conversations still appear on my phone and my iPad in the messages section of the app.

Why do they not replicate the same behavior/ decision? How can I delete the conversations or hide them on my apps?

1.18. Can I Hide Conversations or Block Geocachers from Message Center in the app?

At this time, it is not possible to hide a conversation or block geocachers from the Message Center in the app. You can do so from the Message Center on Geocaching.com. Please note that if you hide a conversation or block another player on the web, those messages will still appear in the mobile app but you will not receive any further messages if another player has been blocked.

I want to delete a message. How do I do that?

We do not currently allow players to permanently delete a message. You can, however, "Hide Conversation" which will cause the message thread to disappear until the next time you start a conversation with that player.

  2. Every time I try and log this travel bug I picked up I can't it keeps giving me this error

"Sorry, your account has been listed as inactive. You will need to re-login to post a new log."

Even though I'm still currently logged in, I've even tried logging out and logging back in... Not sure what to do about it because I can't even drop this one off without it havn't a black hole of being missing :/

How are you logging your finds? (via a phone app or through the website) Your last recorded find was back in October.

Your account is inactive. Logging in and out won't change that.

You will need to contact Groundspeak to have this resolved.

  3. If all is well, you should post an "owner maintenance" log. If the cache listing continues to display the "needs maintenance" icon, it may be caught up in the sweep again.

4.19. Remove the “Needs Maintenance” icon

    http://support.Groundspeak.com/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=404

Get in the habit of posting "owner maintenance" logs. Keep your listings clear of unnecessary NM icons. A lack of communication from the cache owner is one of the reasons that caches get disabled, then archived, by the Reviewers.

  4. What do folks think about taking away the allowance for cache owners to be able to delete a log? as when you leave feedback on an ebay purchase it has to stand and cannot be deleted. just like a log you have written against a cache find should stand,i have just had a log deleted from last february,i just did not think this could happen, it is all sorted now as it was not my log that the owner wanted to delete, but after all that amount of time? it meant i had to renumber 1179 caches as i keep the front page printed out for all my cache finds with dates times and notes etc,the possible deletion could have caused me hours of work, especially as i had found the cache. a great caching merry christmas to you all. jeff=bones1.

It would be a very bad idea to take log deletion from the hands of the cache owner.

One would have to involve Groundspeak or a Reviewer to delete bogus logs, duplicate logs, etc. That is why Groundspeak has put the responsiblity of log deletions in the hands of the cache owners.

It's part of the cache owner's responsibility to maintain the listing, as well as the physical cache.

    Guidelines:

    https://www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx

Owner is responsible for geocache listing maintenance.

As the owner of your cache listing, your responsibility includes quality control of all posts to the cache listing. Delete any logs that appear to be bogus, counterfeit, off-topic or otherwise inappropriate.

    4.12. Log Deletion

    http://support.Groundspeak.com/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=204

It is one of your maintenance duties as the geocache owner to monitor quality control of posts to the geocache page. To this end, you have the power to delete logs.

  5. I was a premium member, but now my premium membership has expired and a new membership would not be a benefit for me.

Unfortunately I forgot to change my caches listing's visibility from only premium members to all members.

Hence, I can't see my own caches on the map anymore.

How can I change the visibility of my caches, so that I can see them again?

    Thanks

You need to contact a Reviewer or GS HQ:

4.22. Edit Premium member only status on a listing

    http://support.Groun...=kb.page&id=285

If a basic member owns a PMO cache

A basic member can own a PMO cache if the cache owner's Premium membership lapses or a basic member adopts a PMO cache.

As a basic member, you can

See cache pages for your PMO caches.

    Post logs.

    Edit the listing.

However, you cannot change the PMO status. To change the PMO status, contact a reviewer, or contact Geocaching HQ.

Be sure to send the email from the account that owns the listing and include the GC code.

Can't the OP just get a list of their caches from their profile page or from this URL: https://www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest.aspx?u=freddy2001

Then edit each one to remove the PMO status. No need to use the map for this.

The OP is a Basic Member, and as the Help Center article says, can no longer edit the PMO status. If he wants to see his owned caches on the map, they need to have the PMO status removed.

And only Groundspeak can do that now.

  6. Hi All

I've noticed on the Geocaching.com website and phone app (iPhone)that the 'sad face' icon isn't showing when I log the cache as 'did not find'. I'm sure it used to show the sad face or am I imagining that?

    Regards, Paul

I don't know anything about the app, but in my list of logs, the dnf's are marked by a blue sad face.

    https://coord.info/GLM5V8KD

DNF's don't show up on the geocaching map, if that's where you're looking.

  8. hello,

we just got our 8yr son an etrex 10. how do we put the cashes on it so he can geocache?

The first thing I would suggest is to download the full owner's manual and study it:

    http://static.garmin.com/pumac/eTrex_10-20-30_OM_EN.pdf

Assuming that only your account is the Premium Membership one, you can use pocket queries and bookmark lists to get caches into the gps.

  9. When we were looking for a spot for hide we noticed two red circles on the Geocaching planning website that don't have caches within the circle. We've solved most of the local puzzles and multi's but the finals wouldn't show up on the map anyway.

What would cause a "red" circle on the map when there's no cache within the zones? (I've even searched archived caches )

The question is more out of curiosity than anything else, so please be kind.

Archived caches have been removed from the map, and don't come into play with saturation issues.

  10. I was unpleasantly surprised by the new look of icons. It is for me a very chaotic and confusing.

I can recognize PM and NON PM cache. Wherigo icon is probably the same as Unknown cache.

    And what about you?

I'm guessing that posting this in the "Design" subforum was an error?

  11. Hello all,

I'm a muggle and always have been! I've just recently dipped my toe into the world of geocaching and I must say the water feels nice! I haven't had a find yet, but I plan to soon.

I'm a bit hampered though. I'm currently away from home in a country with only a solitary cache. I plan to find it soon, and intend to leave a travel bug to see if it follows me home. I think finding out about geocaching in a place with only one cache is bittersweet. It's bad because I am limited to what I can find, but good as I can leave a lasting impression by doubling the cache count if I leave my own cache.

You don't have any trackables owned or in your possession. Are you confusing trackables and caches?

This leads me to a dilemma, is it good geocaching form to hide a cache and then leave the country? Essentially leaving it to fend for itself? What's your opinion? I really want to leave a cache here as I will never be here again and I have a great idea about a cache. But if my legacy will just be muggled or the such like, is it worth it?

Anyway I'm rambling on. Just thought I would say hi and introduce myself and ask whether it's cool to just leave a geocache to fend for itself when I leave the country for good?

    No, it's not "cool".

You really should read the Guidelines before placing a cache anywhere. If you leave something there, and it's not published, have you left geolitter? Not a good impression.

There's a lot to learn before placing a geocache, and submitting it for review. Are you aware of any local laws that would prohibit placing a geocache? Just because there is already one there doesn't mean that it is okay.

But the primary problem is placing a cache in a place where you never intend to return. The cache owner is responsible for the physical container and continuing maintenance.

    Guidelines:

    https://www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx

    In particular:

Owner is responsible for visits to the physical location.

You are responsible for occasional visits to your cache to ensure it is in proper working order, especially when someone reports a problem with the cache (missing, damaged, wet, etc.), or posts a Needs Maintenance log. Temporarily disable your cache to let others know not to search for it until you have addressed the problem. You are permitted a reasonable amount of time – generally up to 4 weeks – in which to check on your cache. If a cache is not being maintained, or has been temporarily disabled for an unreasonable length of time, we may archive the listing.

The region in which a cacher is considered able to maintain caches responsibly will vary from person to person. A cacher who has previously logged caches within a wide range of their home may be considered able to maintain a geocache 200 miles (322 km) away. However, someone whose geocaching activities have primarily been within 25 miles (40 km) of home may not be able to maintain a geocache this far from home. This factor is determined at the discretion of the cache reviewer or Groundspeak.

Because of the effort required to maintain a geocache, please place physical caches in your usual caching area and not while traveling. Caches placed during travel will likely not be published unless you are able to provide an acceptable maintenance plan. This plan must allow for a quick response to reported problems, and might include the username of a local cacher who will handle maintenance issues in your absence. Alternatively you might train a local person to maintain the cache. Document your maintenance plan in a Note to Reviewer on your cache listing. This should include contact information of the maintainer. The note will auto-delete on publication.

  12. I know I'm nitpicking here, but other souvenirs are listed on my profile with the date based on when I found the geocache (even if that predated the existence of the souvenir), but the Puerto Rico one is listed as having been acquired yesterday, despite it being based on a 2007 find. Will this fix itself, or am I going to twitch a little bit when I check my souvenirs?

It's not going to fix itself.

You need to report it to Groundspeak.

There's always glitches when they do these rollouts, and they need to know about them.

    B.

  13. I went to my souvenir tab today to see my new РОССИЯ souvi but to my horror a bunch of "31 Days of Geocaching souvenirs" suddenly showed up. I went out of my way to log my finds in July or September that year to avoid all that ugly clutter.

Yes I know about the "Hide this" option but I can still see them they are just ghosted out.

You should contact Groundspeak and report this very weird bug. You posted no finds in the month of August 2013 and you have those souvenirs show up? Must be something to do with the new souvenirs released. I think something like that happened one other time a new country souvenir was released.
