  1. Terms of Use

    Effective date: April 7, 2023

    https://www.geocaching.com/policies/en/terms-of-use

    Quote

3.6    Inactive or abandoned geocaches. One of our goals as a company is to keep the world free of abandoned and/or unmaintained geocaches. As a geocache owner, you give us permission to allow other individuals to remove and/or dispose of your physical geocache(s) if any one or more of the following situations are met:
3.6.1    We have a reasonable belief that you are no longer active in the game.
3.6.2   You fail to respond to a communication from us that relates to a complaint from a landowner or law enforcement official within a reasonable period of time.
3.6.3   We have a reasonable belief that the geocache has been abandoned (e.g. it’s not actively being maintained or your geocache listing has been archived but the physical container is still in place).
3.6.4   We believe the removal of the geocache container is in the best interest of the geocaching game and/or community. If possible under the circumstances, we will make a reasonable attempt to contact you before we take any of the actions above. In the event that your geocache is removed and/or disposed of pursuant to this section, you agree to hold harmless and release from all claims both Groundspeak and any person who has adopted, removed, and/or disposed of your geocache. Learn more about how we address unmaintained caches in our Help Center.

  2. I assumed the OP was a new player because of this question.  However, OP has been playing for 9 years, so now I'm guessing that there is a back-story to this question.

Groundspeak will back up cache owners who delete logs because the log book hasn't been signed, no?

If they don't like to sign logbooks, I can't see how they would be interested in doing the required work to properly log an Earthcache.

Is signing the log absolutely a requirement? My wife and I like to hunt for caches but are not interested in signing the logs. Are there any rules covering this?

Are you posting "found it" on the cache page?  If you are, you should be prepared to have your online log deleted if your signature does not appear on the physical log in the cache.

I will check the physical against online "found it" claims.  I've deleted any that haven't actually signed the log.

In the olden days, people used to actually write stories in the log books.

    Found it

You can log caches online as "Found" after you visited the coordinates and signed the logbook. You can also add a photo or a Favorite point to your online log.

Please take time to write at least a few sentences when you log your find — this is how you say “thank you” to the cache owner for creating and placing the geocache.

I kinda agree.  I sorta have the feeling that if you participate in this hobby, knowing you're playing with others, everything's fair game.

    But the gallery is different.

If I had small kids (or just recently divorced, had a stalker...) it seems like I should be able to keep the gallery removed from view if I wanted.

     - Anyone can join, and no one's looking at member's real life/criminal history...

We can now pretty-much keep others from seeing anything we do in this hobby.  So just asking about your gallery is a bit odd (to me) too.

Sounds like Facebook, where people post photos of their kids, and every bit of their "private" life.

I very often depend on the photos posted to decide whether or not to bother searching for a cache. I've got loads of gpx files saved that the cache is archived/gone, but want to visit that location any way. Seeing photos is a big part of geocaching for us.

People can choose wisely what photos they post to cache pages or in their galleries.  Shouldn't be a problem when the photos should relate to a cache.

My GPS has stopped working. Just wondering what people are using now and what programme for geocaching

Just wondering...why not consider getting new gps?

We are not "app" people, and Basic Members, so if our gps died, we would be shopping for a new one.

  6. Just went through this...."team name" abbreviation signed in the log, but each team member logged paste & copy logs online using their own accounts. And, yes, one of them got the description of the location mixed up with another location.

That's better than the "tftc" that logged the cache online, but didn't sign the actual paper log in the cache.  Tempted to delete that one.

  7. If possible, move your special caches a short distance.  And re-hide more deviously, if possible.  Increase the Difficulty rating if necessary.  That should remove them from search results for Basic Members using the app, I think.

Then definitely make them Premium Member Only.

So sad to hear that creative caches are being stolen.  At least I can now understand why people hide micros.

Good luck, and don't lose hope.  Keep coming up with those creative caches!

  8. There's a series of puzzles not very far from where I live. I would really like to solve these puzzles, but their Dropbox links are broken (since Dropbox made changes to file access earlier this year). I sent a message to the CO to check if they were aware of this, and they replied the issue would be addressed.

Then nothing happened, even though at least one of the puzzles has since received a WN log (from another geocacher) also stating the issue with the unavailable puzzle(s). Would it be appropriate to post a NM log, even though the issue isn't with the actual cache, or is there a better approach?

Cache owners are responsible for the maintenance of the cache listing, as well as the cache itself.

A "needs maintenance" log is appropriate for this situation.

The Co should have been aware that Dropbox was changing its policies, and should have changed the cache listings as necessary as soon as possible, or temporarily disabled the listings until the fixes were complete.

  9. If it was me, I would mark it as "missing" and lock the page, so it doesn't continue to get all those fake logs.

It's not been logged as actually, physically being moved for years now. What you have now are pages and pages of fake "discoveries". People actually have the gall to state quite clearly that they never saw your tb, but just got the code off a list.

It's been way too long since this tb got highjacked to do anything about it. Years and years of fake logs...I'm not even sure your tb actually still exists.

Sorry about all the fakers and cheaters out there, but I think your tb is a lost cause.

  10. This seems to be much ado about nothing.

Coords on cache (and not changed):

    N 48 27.328 W 123 24.302

    Coords posted by lacky:

    N 48 27.324 W 123 24.301

Distance between the two according to FizzyCalc:

    24.65 feet (7.52 meters)

I think this is well within the normal error range.

You missed a crucial part of the Lackey's log:

I marked a WP while there, but the numbers weren't as different as they should have been.

...as well as a few other data points:

    Highlands_Guy

    Found it

Found despite the incorrect coordinates. The actual location is 15-meters at 160 degrees true from the posted coordinates.

    ...

I just did some quick measuring on some aerial imagery based on my recollection of where the cache really is, and the coordinates are off by about 17 metres (~55 feet), give or take a few metres.

    ...

This is the note I was sent:

thanks for the note on Gingers Walk #1.the coords were correct for were I wanted you to arrive, then you have to read the hint to finish the search for the cache.can you please go back and deleate the other cords you have posted, other wise its just way to easy a find if you don't have to think about it.thank you very much for you help on this. cache for two

So, in summary, the CO used intentionally incorrect coordinates that are off by approximately 16 metres. That's what's being discussed here.

Sounds like the wrong cache type, as well as intentionally "soft coordinates".

    Guidelines

    https://www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx

    Traditional Caches

A traditional cache consists of at least a container and logbook and is located at the posted coordinates.

  11. Good grief. Is this gang up on the forum newbie day?

That's nothing. Wait til you see the cache log Notes, six months from now. :yikes:

It's been found over 20 times now. I can safely say there's a ton of puzzles in my area that are even harder than this.

It uses guitar tabs. The first three notes from both sets of lyrics is the answer, excluding zeros.

Well, the 2017 "finds" were the people you explained the puzzle to, gave them the coordinates and then escorted them to the location.

I think that reduced the "difficulty" to a 1 for that group, no?

I don't think the hint "email me" is much use.I guess if I planned ahead and knew to do that beforehand, then it might help. But hints are usually meant to be helpful in the field, during the search.

I guess in this day and age where everyone has a cell phone, I'm a dinosaur.

  12. Using your find of https://coord.info/GC45A6P Haggis Highway: Killoch Burn Korner as an example:

There are 5 bookmark lists on the cache page. Click on the link "view all 5 bookmark lists".

you can run a pq of an other person's bookmark list.

    B.

  13. We are heading to Europe and the computer I am bringing does not let me download the coordinates to my Garmin GPSmap 60 so I am using my home computer to pre-load the coordinates. First I deleted everything from my Garmin to make room for the additional information. The downloads appear to be successful but when I go to find them on the Garmin GPS unit nothing is showing up. So, are they actually loaded but not showing up due to the distance? Will they magically appear once I am within a closer proximity? Thanks for your response.

The old 60 doens't have the limitiations on distance. So it should right away offer you about every waypoint you have been putting onto the device regardless where in the world it is. I just remember that the device only stores waypoints and no further info. And it also comes with ~115MB of free space so you're VERY limited in installing maps.

In this special case I would more suggest using a smartphone, sorry to say that!

When I have caches loaded into the 60 that are more than 50 miles away (I think it is), then I have to search for them by name, or wait until I'm closer physically to use the "nearest caches" option.

As for maps, use the microsd card to load the maps onto.

    B.

  14. I feel so silly but I've spent the last hour trying to find out if there is some way I can get a list of all caches in a Series. I am new to this and have done a few random caches and noticed that some of them are listed as ".... Series" surely there is an easier way to find these than just scrolling through a map? I would appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction, I'm heading off on holiday next week and don't expect much internet access so trying to plan ahead.

You could do a search by using the filter "Geocache Name Contains ..."

Then create a bookmark list of those caches you want to seek.

Then run a pq of that bookmark list.

Another way to find particular caches in a series is to check out any bookmark lists posted to the cache page.

    B.

  15. I found a traditional cache yesterday and found the coordinates were wrong. Many previous logs also referenced the posted coordinates took then to the wrong location.

In my log I posted the correct coordinates, but the CO contacted me requesting me to remove the correct coordinates as it makes it too easy to find.

What are your thought on this>

    https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC349CC_gingers-walk-1

I would post a NM log. "Maintenance" involves the cache page as well as the physical container.

"soft" coordinates are against the Guidelines.

I would also email the Reviewer and send him/her a copy of that CO's communication.

Sounds like someone should have posted an NA a long time ago. Like maybe a Lackey.

  16. i have never myself ever done a pocket query, but have some organised for gsak all done for me by another clever cacher, i would like some click by click instructions on how to do it and then get the result loaded on a garmin montana. jeff=bones1. :)

It took a bit of doing, but I finally found the pocket query instructions in the recently re-vamped Help Center:

    https://www.geocaching.com/help/index.php?pg=kb.chapter&id=7&pgid=118

    https://www.geocaching.com/help/index.php?pg=kb.chapter&id=7&pgid=261

Much easier to find is Markwell's pq page:

  17. The loss of vital tools like bookmarks and pq's just made things worse. Those are the primary reason we have returned to being PM.

Huh? Bookmarks (https://www.geocaching.com/account/lists) and pocket queries (https://www.geocaching.com/pocket/default.aspx) are still there, and are listed on the dashboard.

Both of which are available to premium members but not to basic, which is why PP apparently returned to premium membership to get them back.

That's what I meant. Not being a PM meant the loss of the bookmarks and pq's, and was the ultimate reason why we paid up finally. Caching without them is a ridiculously painful and frustrating experience.

The search function as a Basic Member is abysmal.

Maybe when we get some sort of mobile phone (soon), we might search out the various free non-GS apps. What I've read here on the forums about the GS app is not encouraging.

Free should not equal useless, and we might very well be Basic Members again soon.

    B.

  18. We don't use the app, but the recent changes have made it difficult to search for caches when one is a Basic Member. Very frustrating.

Even the newly-revamped GS newsletter is favoured towards PM's, as the Basic Member newsletter does not give a link to "new caches near you", as is provided in the PM newsletter.

The loss of vital tools like bookmarks and pq's just made things worse. Those are the primary reason we have returned to being PM.

    B.

  19. How far away from my home location can I place a cache? I spend a lot of time 50-70 miles from home...camping caching.

One of our caches is 66 kms from our "home location". Before placing it, we had a lot of finds in the area, proving that we spent a lot of time there.

    B.

  20. Triforce informed me of this message thread.. letting me know that in certain cases a cache could be removed from the queue if there are questions or concerns about it. And when this occurs it is futile to post reviewers notes on the page because the reviewer will not see them.

Just in case that is the reason why my new cache is still awaiting review - and since there's been no word from the reviewer since I submitted it last week on Tuesday - I'm writing here to see if someone could take a peek and see if something similar is fouling my submission.

The GC code for my cache is GC75R4V.

    Thanks in advance! icon_smile_approve.gif

As a suggestion to all, if you post a reviewer note and do not get a response in a week, try e-mail and or use the messaging system. Please include the name and GC# in these correspondences.
