  1. How do you navigate to the map from the main www.geocaching.com page?
  2. After looking in the GPS units topic forum here and getting some advice, I've completely changed my mind. I'm going to trade in my Etrex Vista for a Garmin Quest. I'm an occasional geocacher with 3yr and 5yr old sons joining me so a 20 hr rechargable lithium battery is fine. Plus I've yet to see any topographical software in the UK that I can load onto a GPS for geocaching so for the most part I rely on the compass heading and "go to" in order to find a cache - which the Quest can do. So I'll give the Quest a try as it seems to be very good for the car, and not as delicate as the TomTom Go. If it's no good for geocaching then I'll buy a second GPS, probably an Etrex VistaC. In any case I'll let this forum know how I get on. Thanks for all the help. Mark
  3. Once again, thanks everyone for your advice. I'm going to trade in my Etrex Vista for a Quest and see how it goes using it for both car navigation and occasional geocaching. I'll let you know how well, or not, I get on with it. I'm not sure if the Groundspeak reply email thing is working as I haven't received any emails - so VisionQuest220 thanks for posting your reply here as well. Mark
  4. VisionQuest220 - Hey, thanks very much for posting on the Garmin Quest. Is it a beast to carry around? Do you have a lanyard or belt clip or something to carry it with, do you have to unfold the antenna thing to use it when geocaching? With 3yr and 5yr old boys I don't exactly climb mountains and we're occasional geocachers, but we do love geocaching - I'm just uncertain as to whether I need 2 different GPS units or can get by with a Garmin Quest. You mentioned thanks to SergZak you have new screens to switch to? What do you mean by that? One thing I'd thought about was whether I should load up the streetmaps on a Quest and the recreational maps on something different. How did you solve that dilemma? Is it possible to switch mapsets once you get out of the car and have to walk to the cache location... Sorry for all the questions - final one, are you happy with how it works in the car? Mark
  5. has anyone used the Garmin Quest for Geocaching yet? I want to upgrade my Etrex Vista for a VistaC or a Quest to use in both the car and for geocaching. Anyone have any good or bad experiences with the Quest?
  6. hmmm....any offers for my etrex vista with a Garmin belt holster and a copy of my European Mapsource CD? I still have the box, manual and PC cable. £150 or near offer? I'll also check out the part ex price.
  7. Thanks for the advice. I think I'll get a TomTom Go for the car. But I would like to upgrade my Garmin Etrex Vista for the new VistaC. Anyone know if/where I can part exchange it? Or where is the best place to sell my Garmin Etrex Vista? It's in excellent condition. Mark
  8. I use a Garmin Etrex Vista for Geocaching. I've had it for about 3 years now. I'm thinking about buying a GPS for my car to use when driving north of the Watford Gap and in France. Does anyone have any experience or advice on whether I should/could sell my Vista and buy a single GPS for car use and geocaching when I get to a location? (and which one people would recommend) Any advice gratefully received! Thanks, Mark
  9. Thanks for the heads-up...updating my Vista now.... Mark, Matthew & Christopher We'll get there eventually....
  10. Unless I mis-read the cache and it's logs, I don't think anyone had to pay to join the VW event. I don't have a problem with the VW event, at the end of the day it's a game and if more people get involved so much the better. I personally think that people here are still a tad oversensitive as a result of the clearly commercial caches over a year ago in the UK where every other posting on the site and cache hidden had links to that person's GPS software and business. 11. In the last few years I've been using the over-the-counter Beconase nasal spray. No side effects and one bottle usually lasts the season. Did some caching yesterday in New Hampshire before returning home Monday - my jeans from the knee down were virtually yellow with pine pollen from the ferns etc.... but only one sneeze. 12. Thanks Dan - that did it. Apologies for the newbie question. Mark, Matthew & Christopher We'll get there eventually....
  13. I placed my first cache today and duly submitted the appropriate form. The Geo-bot sent me an email saying the form had been received and I should click the URL to add photos and edit the cache. I clicked the URL, and it seems that my cache isn't there (not even in a holding pen), do I have to wait for it to be approved to add a photo of the cache, the location and details of the travel bug I left in it? Sorry if I'm jumping the gun, but the instructions weren't clear and I'm a tad excited to be hiding my first cache in what I think is a great place. Thanks. 14. RocketMan - I'm going to use your travel bug label, it looks very professional. Thanks for posting and sharing it. Mark Mark, Matthew & Christopher We'll get there eventually....

  17. Geostars - I second that sentiment. If you don't vote - you have absolutely no right to complain about the results of the election or how the country is run etc etc.... Wasn't the right to vote one of the reasons the American revolution occurred (no taxation without representation)? Voting should be a duty and a periodic way of thanking the soldiers of today and the past for protecting this basic democratic right over the past century or so. Just look at what happened in France due to voter apathy! Len Pen isn't far from being a fascist. In the UK there is a huge effort being made to increase voting percentages - introducing postal ballots, phone voting, mobile phone SMS voting, internet voting etc. Gone are the days when people have time to visit their local library or high school to vote, perhaps new technology will involve me people in the voting process. Just my 2 cents worth. Mark, Matthew & Christopher We'll get there eventually....

  19. I considered the Navman too....but went with an ETrex Vista as the ETrex floats in water and is waterproof. I'd be gutted if my Ipaq died on me because of a little rain whilst geocaching. Mark, Matthew & Christopher We'll get there eventually....

  21. Well done everyone! What incredible teamwork. Will this be called "UK Bench Marking" when it's published or something else? Mark, Matthew & Christopher We'll get there eventually....

  23. I recall someone pointing out that lighters were a particularly bad idea in caches, particularly in the summer months as an ammo box or even a tupperware container could really heat up in sun and lighters could potentially turn into mini-bombs as a result. It sounded like a good reason not to include them. Mark, Matthew & Christopher We'll get there eventually....
