  1. You will gain the ability to never be lost while driving again. Caching in unfamiliar areas is a breeze. We use a Map60C. Find > geocache > PICK IT > Go To > Follow roads > Quickest route/ Fastest Route > It calculates the driving directions and off we go. When we get there we switch to off road mode. Adding mapping ability is the best way to get the most out of your GPS. ImpalaBob
  2. Garmin's compatability chart says No to City Select ..... you need Metroguide. If you have never used the unlock codes with your product .... then you could easily re-sell it and buy the right program. If your computer is a laptop ..... you can download nRoute from Garmin for free, hook the legend up to the laptop (it becomes your Sat antenna), and .... you have City Select fully functional with voice prompts for autorouting. ImpalaBob
  3. Any time Garmin has replaced a unit under warranty they gave me a new unlock code. I consider $100 a real bargain for the City Select maps and POI base. A good US map set is $20 and its crap compared to what you get in City Select. I got nRoute for free from Garmin .... what a bargain. I'm thinking I got a great deal myself! ImpalaBob
  4. A gpx file may contain 1 cache or 500 caches or whatever. Run the convert and transfer the file. Just remember to give each gpx file a unique name if you save multiple single gpx files from the web site. ps .... you can do 5 pocket queries each day. We definitly do a new querey right before going out the door if we can so we avoid disabled or archived caches. ImpalaBob
  5. There is an option for saving the unit unlock codes for back-up and retrival. Use this option and copy the file to your 2nd computer. Install the software on your 2nd computer and use the option to restore your unlock codes from your saved file. It's really easy. All this negativity! Every time I have talked with a Garmin rep they have been extremely helpful and courteous. If they owe you something they are glad to give it to you. They are eager to make things right for you. I've been given some nice freebies for my time and effort in debugging some hardware issues on a 60C that I had (I'm a circuit engineer). ImpalaBob
  6. Yes ... and if you want wireless ..... this adapter will power the unit and enable bluetooth communication between the GPS and a Bluetooth enabled laptop or PDA. I've got to get one of these! ImpalaBob
  7. Here is the link that I found. I also found that they have one for the pPlug so that I could use it with my 60C pPlug version link. Way cool since I just got a laptop with Bluetooth and WIFI. One less wire to connect. ImpalaBob
  8. So then, on top of getting the City Select maps, I would have to buy a cable and Enroute? nRoute is a free download from Garmin's web page. Cable is your normal USB connection cable. ImpalaBob
  9. E-mailing the cache owner to verify the coordinates is my first step. Begging for a hint is the second. Having done over 700 caches this past year with Koikeeper ..... I'm still surprised at how clever cachers can be at hiding objects. We've gotten a lot better at finding them also ..... but still have problems once in a while. I missed one (a nano) recently because I did not have my flashlight with me. Went back with flashlight and had it in a few minutes. ImpalaBob
  10. If you use the wireless access geocaching.com page it will give you a much abbreviated page for saving. Hold ALT and hit PrintScreen. Open Paint program and Hold CTRL and hit V (to paste) .... let it resize. Save as .jpg type and use free Palm VD viewer ....below post..... to look at it. ImpalaBob
  11. Another thread says: "Palm Tungsten T3, and an AA battery backup external palm keyboard Data cable between the Palm and the GPS Pathaway software to upload custom maps, once you find a source." So I'll revise my NO .... with a maybe! The PDA must be able to run certain software to interface with the GPS. Cable source possibly here! ImpalaBob
  12. We have 2 Map 60C units and City Select N/A. We use autorouting all the time and love it. We just got a new laptop and are going to interface using nRoute so we have voice prompts. I've used the autoroute feature driving solo and had no problems with the beep prompts. ImpalaBob
  13. Simply ..... NO. You've got to have a computer between them! ImpalaBob
  14. I got our City Select and the autokit from ProVantage. ImpalaBob
  15. I bought 3 and I can read all the tracking numbers. When the US mint makes mistakes on coins they become real valuable. I'm hoping for the same! ImpalaBob
  16. The new Garmin "X" series have a new more sensitive chip set. Reports are that it gets sats faster and hold them better. Otherwise get a model that will take an external antenna .... like a Gilsson .... that will boost sat reception at the cost of slightly less battery time. ImpalaBob
  17. Let me try and clarify a few things. I'm not assuming you are doing anything wrong .... just trying to help. Taping the power button is how you quickly set/change the level. Enter or quit gets the slider off the screen when done. Correct Setup lets you select day, night or auto ...... brightness level ..... and how long it stays on. If in auto ..... when after GPS internal clock says dusk is (based on correct clock and calander settings) .... backlight comes on when you hit any key for time specified. If in day .... backlight does not work. If in night ..... backlight comes on when you hit any key for specified time. YES .... This should repeat as many times as you hit any key. External power turns backlight on constantly in auto after dusk, or when in night mode. If you understand this, and it is not operating correctly You should contact Garmin for a repair. We have 2 60C units and the backlighting has never failed us. ImpalaBob
  18. I've got City Select N/A maps on my 60C and it shows airports ..... well not every grass strip .... but I'd say every one with a lighted runway capable of landing a twin on. I'll have to take a closer look at this! By regulation you have to have your charts, and the 60C will tell you where your at on the chart. The 60C should also be pretty good at calculating ETA. With Ximage you could do custom symbols for airports and VORs and create your own waypoint database. gpx files and loc files are only text files and one could easily edit in a lot of custom aviation waypoints using mapsource and a text editor. I'm also a pilot and I can think of a lot of ways to make my 60C useful while flying. I'm sure Neo_Geo did do a lot of work! ImpalaBob
  19. Since Koikeeper and I post all our finds under her account .... my account looks pretty poor compared to my forum posts. We've done 700 finds in our 1st year. I'm a computer hardware engineer so I enjoy the forums .... especially the units and software section. ImpalaBob
  20. Yes ..... The GPS is acting as the antenna ..... but as said the autorouting can only be as good as the level of maps you have loaded in the laptop. ImpalaBob
  21. Make sure the screen you want to copy is the active screen. Hold down the "Alt" key and hit the "PrintScreen " key. This copies the screen image to your clipboard. Now open an image editor > Start>Programs>Accessories>Paint ...... Hold down the "Ctrl" key and hit "V" ..... say ok to resize ..... save as a .jpg type. Hope this helps. ImpalaBob
  22. If you would like to take pictures and post them under your personal profile section .... that would be OK. Otherwise it is considered bad form to post any pictures on the cache page that give away any more information than the owner of the cache wants disclosed. When a cache owner wants to get really evil they may often post pictures that have no relationship to the actual cache to throw you completely off track ..... true spoilers! ImpalaBob
  23. Hey Sputnik ..... Maybe I should have zipped them the code. ImpalaBob
  24. Autorouting is only as good as the maps .... so another purchase of detailed mapping software is required as the base maps are only the larger highways. ImpalaBob 60C with City Select Maps. Soon we will be hooking up the 60C to a new laptop with Garmin's nRoute and it will then give voice prompts for the turns!
