  1. I don't like anyone- kids or none others standing in dog mess- there are diseases you can get fom it.

I wouldn't worry so much about that...I totally agree with you that getting any kind of poop on you is a less than pleasant experience but unless you eat it, poke it in your eye, or smear it onto an open wound, you're probably pretty safe.

It sounds like you're a responsible and concerned parent so I'm assuming your kids aren't the poop-eating types

I do get really irritated about dog poop, but at least a lot of owners are responsible on that. I have a much greater problem with horse poop....

  2. I'd wondered about that...I'd be interested to collect the sig cards but I wasn't sure if they were there to be taken, or supposed to be left in the cache. Any other thoughts on this?

  3. I'd be a definite possible, but I haven't camped in my life so would vote for a campsite with showers and toilets and stuff

I DO have a tent. I just don't quite know what to do with it

Can make pretty much any weekend, with notice, other than bank holidays!

  4. Okay...so now I'm looking at City Select Europe and it's in the region of £150...so I'm looking at however much for the GPS PLUS that for the mapping?

The idea of getting a GPS "on the cheap" might not work out after all :( I'd be looknig at around £400 for the full setup I guess?

I dunno....am I being too pessimistic here? For that money would I be better just to get a PDA and decent map software?? Could I make THAT navigate if I somehow connected it to the Etrex?

Thanks for the help so far....you're saving me from a potentially very expensive mistake :(

  5. Useful so far, thanks :(

I guess my main worry is how detailed the maps are, and how much extra I would have to pay to load a UK basemap into a US unit (if indeed I can).

Can't find anything about the Quest on garmin's website...am I being dim??

I'm now starting to think about sticking with my little yellow fella and upgrading my PDA so that I can put map software on it...

    All too confusing!

  6. Hi all....just found out my brother will be heading to the US in a couple of weeks. Seems like a good opportunity to get him to pick me up a new GPS unit for a reasonably good price, but I don't know what to go for.

At the moment I'm using a standard yellow etrex. I love it, however, in my perfect world I would like mapping, and possibly to be able to use it for in-car navigation.

I'm quite in love with the Garmin 60-C, however, I can't find much out about the maps available for it e.g. cost and detail...would I be able to stop carrying all these OS maps around with me?

How does it compare to the Magellan SporTrak which appears to be its equivalent?

And, getting more sensible on price, should I just get an Etrex Legend with maps? In which case, the same question comes up about the quality of the maps available.

I do a reasonable amount of my caching in Cornwall away from major roads and out in the wilds, so the maps are important to me :(

    Thanks for your help!

  7. I've been very interested reading this thread by how many people just say "don't put in copied CDs, it's illegal".

Now, I'm not going to argue with that - yep, it's illegal. But the strength of feeling in here that you shouldn't do it seems very different from the opinions/actions amongst my peers both in "real life" and other parts of the internet.

If I saw a CD in a cache it's probably the first thing I would take - copied or not. Similarly, I have put copied CDs in caches - not direct rips of albums but rather mixes of a certain style or a certain artist that I like. I'm hoping with that to introduce people to music that then if they like it, they might go out and buy. If they don't like it, they can pass the CD along.

Am I really alone in the geocaching world in thinking (strict legality aside) that this shouldn't be a big deal?

And to stay at least a little on topic - nothing wrong with putting in explicit lyrics but at least label the CD as such. Parents out caching with their kids should be responsible for what they pick up, if they consider it inappropriate, don't take it! :>

What does SV stand for? and yes I already did a search to no avail

I see you are new to these Forums, but since you are so aware of the search feature - this is not your first forum experience.

You have indicated that you did a 2 character search (SV). I am somewhat in disbelief, but very curious.

Normally I would have expected you would get this response from the GC Website to a sub 4 character search:

One or all of your search keywords were below 4 characters or you are searched for words which are not allowed, such as 'html', 'img', etc, please go back and increase the length of these search keywords or choose different keywords.

Only very recently did someone disclose this 3 character workaround to me:

Using # to allow a 3 Character Search

If you have found a workable 2 character search, please share.

Use % as the wildcard character to get it up to the required four?

    e.g. %sv%

  9. It's a jpeg, just under 1meg, and its name is less than 8 characters long. I'm using Win XP and Firefox as my browser. I don't THINK there should be anytihng screwy with it

Just running off to work now, but will try resizing it and uploading it again later....will keep you posted. Thanks for the help

  11. The last 24 hours I've been trying to upload a photo to go with one of my finds.

It takes forever, then I get a "server error" page which as far as I can tell is written in "geek"...anyone know what is going on?

It looks like a server error rather than that my picture is too big or anything like that, but is there a max size limit?

  12. I have a pretty old Casiopeia which I wasn't using for anything else. Last weekend I managed to do this:

    downloaded GSAK to my laptop

joined as a premium member and ran pocket queries, which I then opened in GSAK

    had GSAK export as HTML

copied these files over to my PDA

opened the files using Internet Explorer on the PDA as and when I needed them in the field!

I tried using isilo and spinner and I didn't find they got me anywhere  I'm not too technically minded. But the html output from GSAK gives you a nice menu, and you can search by name, waypoint, distance etc. Used the system for the first time on my last trip out, and it was much better than carrying reams of paper! :>

  13. Laser pointers are fun for cats... might even be useful for other things

They are annoying in movie theaters, concerts and sports games. I remember a concert I went to once were they stopped singing for a while because the lead singer kept having a laser pointer blind him. I have aslo watched a basketball game on TV were everytime they'd use a specific camera someone would shine a laser at it and render it useless... I'm sure they think its funny but its highly annoying for the rest of us. I can't even count the number of times I've seen them in movie theaters.

Personally the annoying out weighs the fun and useful in my opinion... I'd never leave one.

That's exactly what I wanted to say...I don't care if a kid is stupid enough to blind itself, but I'd rather not have laser pointers shone at me, or at something I'm trying to watch.

  14. My husband and I are usually too busy arguing about who will hold the GPS, or his reluctance to actually LOOK for a cache once we get to the site (he doesn't like "nature" apparently), or he's moaning about being too hot, or I'm moaning about him moaning....

Plus, we're in England. The thought of exposing any flesh in the great outdoors is a bit cold and damp sounding B)
