  1. Hi Everyone,

I am going camping in the Indian Cove campground at Joshua Tree this Saturday night Nov 19th. I will be leaving early (7am) on Saturday. I will be returning with plenty of time to join Princess Toadstool and her hiking/caching/moonwatching crowd.

The weather is supposed to be in the 70's during the day and the 40's at night. I have one space reserved which can hold 6 people.....not sure how many tents....but there are still some sites available if you would like to have your own space.

My main goal is to get to # 200 find and do some 4WD.

Please let me know if you want to come along on this quick journey.

I was just up there last weekend at JTNP. I made the mistake of trying to find a campsite on a 3 day weekend. No luck- all the sites were taken. We ended up camping about ten miles away at Joshua Tree Lake campground. The owner of the campsite had a large group of unsuccessful JTNP campers.

I'm not aware of the kind of rig you're driving but I highly suggest the Brooklyn Mine trail in the Old Dale Mine District area in the eastern part of the park. I have the tracks if you'd like. We did about half of it as a night run. It's a nice mountainous ledge trail with a few rocks and washed out sections that make for a moderate challenge. I wish there were more caches in the area- it is out of the park in that area. There was a cache called "Humbug" but it was too dark and I didn't want to stop the group.

    Dave

Thanks for the offer of your tracks. I have done the Brooklyn Mine.....crawled into the Mine...still old ore cart lines on the ground. I have a reservation so that I wont be stuck without accommadations. I have a jeep and it does pretty well. I am going to try and see if I can get anywhere close to the Carlyle mine.

It is a grand area that is for sure.

  3. For those of you going out, it would be nice if you took along a new coffee can, or even an ammo can for a cache--unless it has been recently replaced. When we went out, the can was getting pretty bad. This is a great cache that everyone has enjoyed and will hopefully be around for a long time to come.

Would a regular size ammo can suffice? I have one I can take out there. By the way, which 'trail head' to meet at? I don't want to miss meeting so many cachers? :D My kids are excited about meeting 'oldtimer' cachers!

So is the trail head here?

    Trailhead #1

    or

    Trailhead #2

    or ?

    Thanks,

    Adelos

Definitely #2 as when I look at google earth and see the elevation change from #1 to cache start it looks like a bit of climbing up and down.

May as well start easy until we see what we're in for

Bad news is I don't think moon rises until 8:48 p.m that night so be sure and bring your headlamps!

    Hi Princess Toadstool,

I will see you Sunday evening at 6pm with a lamp for my head!!!! Should be a nice night.

  4. With this time change cutting into our geocaching after work, we might have to take a loooooonnnnnnnnnggggggg lunch today.   It's just too beautiful outside to be stuck in a lab.

What lab would that be? There seem to be quite a few lab-rat cachers around here!

I'm at the Burnham institute, and Eric (wise-guy) is at Scripps, then Jess sells us stuff, and Mrs LLOT used to work at Scripps, and PassingWind works at Diversa...any more?? The DAK Girls must be at UCSD somewhere, how else would they know all those nooks and crannies? (Mind you, they must work for CalTrans and SD County drains too, given their other hides!)

There are a few cachers who work in the cardiac cath LAB.....at one of the Scripps.Does that count?? HAHA Many many labs out there!!!

  5. In case you all are wondering...No Harmon is not the Tin Man...But he does have these suckers implanted in him:

Yeah...rapamycin (Sirolimus) is some pretty good stuff.  Definitely one of the better cell-cycle blockers out there.  Glad to see someone who has benefited from this wonder drug delivery system.

    BTW....

I got a jar full of hundreds of spent stents on my desk.  Just think Harmon...they could be your new Chotchkie calling card.

    --TT--

I look at these things every day at work.......we throw them into our guests of honor........and now I look at them on here.......YIKES. I do geocaching to get away.......WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMING TO :) HA :)

  6.

BTW. I did some power hiking in Yosemite on Friday.....a total of 21 miles from Happy Isles on the Yosemite Canyon floor to Tuolumne Meadows in a little under 10 hours and ~6000ft of elevation change......ouch!!  :(  I did take "some" time to do some cool virtuals and photo's  :(

Man, you make me tired just reading what you wrote! The Cedar Creek hike was hard enough for us wimps.:(

YOu two did great on the Cedar Falls trail!!!!!

  7. Hey! I'm headed up to Yosemite for some power hiking, I going from the valley floor to Half-dome and then on to Tuolumne Meadows. There's also plans to tackle Mt. Whitney in a day if the weather looks good. I'll be taking the 395 back down to San Diego. I haven't run any PQ's yet but any recommendations along the routes?

I just came down the 395 last month and agree with Mirage on the Manzanar virtuals. Also the Mt Whitney Fish Hatchery is great to see.......neat old building. I did enjoy the side trip to Randsburg. There are many caches along the way if you want the drive to last forever.

At Lee Vining are a couple of neat virtuals.

    Have a great trip

  8. In case you truly don't know what PW is talking about, we started another thread in the Southwest region creating a coin buyers club. We started out just sharing notes, and buying coins. Now, we have progressed, thanks in great part to Mrs. PW, to creating our own coin to represent our region.

The coin looks great!!! Thanks for designing it.

  9. Hi everyone,

I am training for the Honolulu Marathon with the Leukemia Team in Training. This is # 5 for me. I am doing it in memory of my sis in law who passed away from Lymphoma. If you would like to donate please go to http://www.active.com/donate/tntsdh/tntsdhpbroadw or send a check made out to the Leukemia/Lymphoma society to Pat Broadway

    6508 Bradford St

    San Diego, Ca 92115

I do these so someone else won't have to suffer. If possible please respond by Oct 11th. I may get to go to New Orleans so need to get on top of this fundraising. Will also see what geocaches survived out there if I get to go.

Thanks a bunch for considering to support the Leukemia Society.

  10. All this terrible news from the path of Katrina. I wonder how many NEW ORLEANS cache container victims there have been? When I see the flooding news photos, I am looking for floating tupperware and ammo boxes! One piece of good news, Fats Domino has been found. Good luck to the area. Maybe a few CITO events after the water gets drained out!

I may be leaving for New Orleans today.... I have put a lot of the caches in my GPSr, but I don't think I will have time for caching as I am going out as part of the relief effort. I will let y'all know what I find out if I can find my way to a computer with power. Otherwise, it may be two weeks till I talk to ya.

    KEEP SAFE

  11. I had a great trip down the 395 from Reno a little over a month ago. I found some cool caches, some interesting Virtuals, a very emotional Virtual at Manzanar, and saw the Mono Lake Earthcache.

I still had 432 "unfound" caches in my database when I got home . . . :anitongue:

    I was hoping to take a camping trip up that way again . . . but with gas prices where they are . . .  I don't know . . . <_<

That's great!! Now if we could just pull together everyone's recommended finds along the 395 that have been found by each of you and maybe some notes we might find someone in this forum that would be willing to make a nice little bookmark list for all of us that want to make that journey north !:o:o:o

Let me know when you want the list and I will give you the ones I found that were great....I second the Manzanar one.......especially the water reservoir virtual by Team Gecko. Had no idea it was there. Also the Mt Whitney fish hatchery was grand........and a few more.......so let me know.

  12. I came across these helpful bookmarks of I-75 caches. Has anyone thought of pulling some lists/bookmarks together for recommended caches along I-15, I-8, or the 395?

I just came down the 395 and got several along there. Did not take me too long to find several to go look at. Sure help me make my 100 quicker.

Took forever to get down the 395 but I found things I never knew was there or if I knew had no idea of the beauty or the history. Was a grand trip

  13. Congrats smilinglady13 on your century.

BTW have you done your Hawaii marathon? Or is that coming up?

Thank you for the congrats. The Honolulu marathon is in Dec. Thank goodness. Not sure if I could take heat right now!!!! HAHAAHA
