  1. if you would to leave the hobby, we (the aged community) would only be able to 'Extract the Michael' out of Pid for some of the 'more interesting' aspects of the sport that you two have got up to. Take what Chis Packham said as a compliment - You're unique! Bob Team Tate Remember - if it's moving, it's not dead...
  2. Dan, Please don't take too serious an action. What you did was in all innocence and I'm sure by no means did you intend to cause any trouble. Please stay around coz we're all here for you!! Sarah Team Tate Remember - if it's moving, it's not dead...
  3. DJH has offered to be the Fox too. We do want to do it again, but do want to have a go at being chasers next time! So I suppose that everyone can fight amongst themselves over this one whilst we sit back & wait for the chase! I suppose it depends on who can get the technology sorted out and I know DJH would like a hand with that side of things, so perhaps you could get together? 4. We have been approached by a fellow cacher (who shall remain nameless at present!) about doing another Fox Hunt. We had great fun doing it last year and as far as we know no speed limits were broken - well not by us anyway , and I'm sure that people would be up for another one. Now got to speak nicely to The Cat about borrowing some equipment....... Sarah Team Tate Remember - if it's moving, it's not dead...
  5. Did you see the amount of beer Hornet drunk in the pub - well he had to relieve himself somewhere..... Team Tate Remember - if it's moving, it's not dead...
  6. Anyone wishing to place a cache on Forestry Commission controlled land (i.e. the New Forest) must first gain permission. This can be done by writing to them at their address in Lyndhurst (check the phone book!) They can tell you about the no-go areas relating to boundaries or time (due to ground-nesting birds, etc) I hope this clarifies the issue. In the meantime, check out some of the older posts in the UK forum. Bob Team Tate Remember - if it's moving, it's not dead...
  7. The opening shot showed Sarah's car for about two seconds (the red Suzuki Jeep). The producer liked the fact that it was a 4WD and would look better than my Omega. The car is quite small for four people and a dog, but we braved the 45 mile round trip for the sake of 'art'. However, they didn't show the part when we got out of the car and met Chris, which we filmed about three times because Chris kept fogetting his lines! In the end, they went with his close-up. On the second attempt to get the dog back into the car, she caught her foot on one of the seat runners, and subsequently had a limp from which she later recovered. O'mally (our Cache-Hound) was 'borrowed' from one of Sarahs friends. It was her first geocache! It was FREEZING! Beckie's gloves were borrowed from June (who was behind the camera with Tim and Kouros) Bob Team Tate Remember - if it's moving, it's not dead...
  8. Glad to see that we have already attracted a new member already! We're really pleased with how everyone was portrayed and must say a big Thank You to Kouros for throwing us in it. Incidentally, The dog, O'Mally, isn't ours, she belongs to a friend but we were asked to bring a dog along to add to the effect! Mind you, I now know how the famous feel as I was inundated with people in our work restaurant saying 'I saw you on the telly last night'! Sarah Team Tate Remember - if it's moving, it's not dead...
  9. I found this whilst on the BBC web page. It looks like it gets updated after each show: http://www.bbc.co.uk/insideout/south/ I dont know if our feature will be detailed, but it might be worth a look after tomorrow night. Team Tate Remember - if it's moving, it's not dead...
  10. This has been done on a smaller scale. Team Nia have a series of caches with The Bob the Builder theme & in each cache is a stamp which you can add to a card in order to collect the whole set around the country. But sounds like a good idea for other caches. Team Tate Remember - if it's moving, it's not dead...
  11. Just phoned to book the 4 of us in for lunch. The lady I spoke to said that she is now up to 29 people for our party! Does that tally with you Paul? Looks like we'll be keeping them busy! Sarah Team Tate Remember - if it's moving, it's not dead...
  12. Oh, thanks for the reminder. We had better go & check out Without A Paddle as that one is surrounded by water tho not a stream. Not sure where that water comes from but the land surrounding it is concrete so it doesn't drain well. On drier days it can still be interesting to get to! I think I might need a paddle to get to it this time! Sarah Team Tate Remember - if it's moving, it's not dead...
  13. Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas. Eat drink & get very merry (we intend to!) See you all in the New Year. Festive wishes from,Team Tate Bob, Sarah, Beckie & George (who is now impossible to control due to his excitement!) Team Tate Remember - if it's moving, it's not dead...
  14. I have looked into the possibility of trying to re-tune a (Sky Digital) satellite receiver for each of the BBC regions, which I have already done with ITV. Unfortunately, BBC 'regions' are not on satellite yet. This will be happening (apparently) some time during 2003. This was confirmed when I checked out the channel listing on the Astra-SES website. BBC London, Wales, NI and Scotland are the only choices! Ho Humm... (PS - Happy Christmas!) Team Tate Remember - if it's moving, it's not dead...
  15. If anyone is interested, the 'Inside Out' programme is to be broadcast on Monday 13th January at 19:30 on BBC South. Watch it at your discretion!! Team Tate Remember - if it's moving, it's not dead...
  16. Just wanted to say Congratulations to Steve, Sue & family on the arrival of the UK's youngest Geocacher. Best wishes from Bob, Sarah , Beckie & George. Team Tate Team Tate Remember - if it's moving, it's not dead...
  17. I thought he looked more like a cross between Mick Fleetwood and Bill Bailey... Team Tate Remember - if it's moving, it's not dead...
  18. A Magellan Platinun which reported WAAS correction approx. 50% of the time during my drive home from London to Southampton, and a Garmin Vista which showed a differentially corrected accuracy about 30% of the time. The Garmin was reporting an accuracy of 2 meters! Team Tate Remember - if it's moving, it's not dead...
  19. We are planning a Christmas cache. As we have met so many lovely people through Geocaching, we are placing a cache full of little wrapped presents for everyone to find and making the presents only available on Xmas eve, Xmas day & Boxing day after which we plan to leave the cache in place for people to swab Xmas goodies. Just something to say Merry Christmas to all our Geocaching friends! Team Tate Remember - if it's moving, it's not dead...

  21. Team Tate have been actively involved in Geocaching for nearly a year. It has been an intersting year, finding a new hobby, meeting up with some really nice people and making the most of days we would otherwise have sat at home vegetating in front of the television. We became aware of the hobby through two places on the internet: The Garmin website, and another website of an individual who has done as much for the sport as he has done against it (RL). Had I not come across these two artcles, I would probably have never given it a go. I have made it quite clear on previous entries to these forums that I am pro-advertising. I make no bones about how I approach the hobby, and by following a simple set of guidlelines have had tremendous fun both finding and setting caches. As far as I am concerned, advertsing can only be good for the hobby as a whole. It is one of the few Internet based hobbies that does not rely on corporate advertsing to survive (e.g.no banners on ANY of the web pages), and any advertising that DOES exist is designed to benefit the sport (e.g. deals on equipment, etc.). I am not going to get into the debate of who is right, and who is wrong. I have my beliefs and others have their own. However, based on the views expressed by people that I meet, when I tell them I'm a Geocacher, it is usually met with intrigue and interest: They WANT to know more. They WANT to know how they can play. They WANT to know how they can get started. With all these questions, I am MORE than willing to let them know by directing them to the Geocaching website, and letting them find out more. In my own way, I am advertising. With regard to the issue of trashed caches, I have said this before, and I will say it again. If some idiot wants to pay £120 for a GPS, and then go out an trash caches, there is NOTHING you can do about it. Taking this to the extreme, if joy-riders were really worried about a jail term for their activities, would they continue to do it. If murderers of rapists were worried about the consequences of their actions, would it deter them. OK, now I am taking things to extremes, but the sames 'rules' apply in the form of laws that are designed to protect the well being of the 99.99% of the population that are not joy-riders, murders of rapists (or cache-trashers). If it is the mentality people to trash caches, they will. All we can do is follow the guidelines, hide caches in sensible areas, and seek landowner permission if in doubt of a location. With regard to the television article, we agreed to do it because the benefit to be gained by the sport (in our opinion) far outweighs any problems that could be caused. Having appreared on TV before, how many caches were trashed in the West Country thanks to our TV apprearance? How many people were introduced to the sport? If anyone knows the answers to these questions, it might, once and for all, put an end to these constant questions of what is (or is not) best for Geocaching. 22. I, personally, am a true Garmin-ite, but have recently had a chance to play with a Magellan Platinun and Mapsend. There isn't a great deal of difference between the two products, and the accuracy is the same - they use the SAME map database, which is produced by Navtech. The main thing that can cause problems with acuracy is getting the datums wrong between the GPS and the mapping program. This WILL induce errors. I must say, the the Magellan product (Mapsend) is probably a little more refined than Garmin's. One the best features if the height plot feature, which shows the altitude in profile, along any part of a downloaded track. Not very useful, but still very nice! 23. which is a bit more expensive, but 'ready to go'. Maplin sell a multi-channel opto-isolated input/output board for around £60, which controls up to twelve relays via the LPT port. It is sold as a kit but they will make it for you for an additional fee. The best thiing about the board is that it comes with software! The best thing to do before you purchase one, however, is ring their technical support line to ensure it will meet your needs. I used one of these at work to control a test board we were making. The quality of the build and components were excellent. OK, it's quite a lot more that 60p, but the electronics are proven which provides some comfort in the fact that you are not going to mess up your computer if you make a mistake. 24. We wouldn't be happy to find anything like that picture in a cache - try answering the question "Why is there a picture of a naked lady in there? from a 6 year old boy. Explanations could be quite difficult! Only yesterday I was asked what a virgin was by the 6 year old and the 9 year old went one better by asking what an intimate part of a female body was! We don't shelter them that much but what they do see & know about is monitored by us, something that could be quite difficult when they like to be the first to open a cache, which is all the fun of the game for them! 25. These debates go on and on. 1) If people want to Geocache - let them! The MORE the merrier as far as I am concerned. 2) If people want to trash caches - they will - there is nothing we can do about it. Just follow the guidelines when hiding your cache (no people around, remote areas, etc.) are make it as hard as possible. 3) Stop bickering. Enough of the 'he said/she said' mentality. Reading these forums is like a trip back to my old school playground. Team Tate Remember - if it's moving, it's not dead...
