  1. We had 15-20 people come out to Hanna Park here in Jacksonville to clean up. We all took off in different directions, along trails, roadways, and through the picnic areas. I'm not sure what the final haul was - we all came back to 'base camp' several times to empty or pick up new bags; one group even got a bunch of bags from some of the park's maintenance crew when their's were full. In the end though, we put a pretty good amount of trash in the dumpster that the park moved in for us. Some of the more interesting items: pop-top beer cans (imagine how old those were), a plastic vodka bottle, tiling from someone's bathroom, and something that looked like a cross between a garbage can and a jet engine - the land is right next to a navy base, so there's no telling what else could be out there... ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  2. My situation isn't on there either. I'm a year away from getting my doctorate in a professional program (most people view it as being equal to grad school.) Six years of college down, only one to go... never thought I'd see the light at the end of the tunnel. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  3. I contacted the Parks & Recreation Department here in Jacksonville via e-mail, telling them about geocaching, what the CITO day was about, and why we wanted to help. Since there are a lot of parks in town, I also asked for suggestions for parks that the department workers felt needed a good cleanup. I received a reply about a week later, with a list of several of the largest parks in town complete with park websites and e-mail addresses for the parks' managers. I then wrote one to the manager of a park that the local cachers really like, and explained everything again to her. She called me a couple of days later, ecstatic that we wanted to help. I gave her a few more details on what we wanted to do, and she was more than happy to make a few arrangements for us, including moving a dumpster into the central area of the section we'll be working on. She also asked for some more info on geocaching, and got really excited about it. She's coming in on a Saturday to see what all we're going to be doing, and to try her hand at geocaching. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.

That's what I've been calling it - the description has really gotten the attention of some people. And besides, when you really want to go caching, its almost like an itch, and the only way to satisfy the itch is to scratch it. Or perhaps rubbing a cream on it... ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  5. Alright, the page has been set up, and the city's Parks and Recreaction Department has come through with some suggestions. Here's the cache site - go take a look! ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  6. Sorry to hear about the flooding altree. The Jacksonville CITO is still in the planning stages, but is going to happen. The site for the event can be found here. Hope to see everyone there, and again in May at Oleno! ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  7. The idea for a northeastern Florida CITO for Earth Day event on April 26 was brought up by the federation a while back, and I wanted to try to get some Jacksonville-specific ideas going. I e-mailed the Parks and Recreation Department yesterday to give them some idea of what geocaching is about, why we would want to help clean up their parks, and to ask for some recommendations on parks that may need some cleaning. I haven't heard back yet, but hopefully I'll get some response soon. If anybody has some ideas for parks we could help clean, feel free to either e-mail me, or post them here. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  8. quote:Originally posted by the federation:the lazy cachers told me that suburban isles park on the southside was in dire need of cleanup. have not seen much activity on this post do we want to work or not jacksonville boldly going where others have gone before meadowmuffin and I are planning on helping out - just haven't been able to think of any parks that really need a cleaning. I haven't heard of suburban isles, but if that's what we all decide on (not that many jacksonville cachers post in the forums...) that's fine with me. Have you heard anything from the parks department? ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  9. Wow, sounds like someone had some serious aggression to work out against Mattel, or perhaps Barbie in general... Did you happen to take pictures, or the coordinates? ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  10. I doubt I'll see him, but I'll be on the lookout. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  11. Where in Florida? ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  12. The Riverfest idea sounds pretty good, but I think the federation was referring to Cache In Trash Out for Earth Day, as proposed by Jeremy. I may go help out with the river cleanup now that I know about it though - I like free t-shirts. One idea that I've seen a couple of people mention for their areas is to contact the state park system for ideas on areas that need cleaning. We could help the parks and ourselves if we did such a thing - they get a cleaned up park, and we help geocaching make/keep a good name for the activity. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  13. I don't think there would be a problem with having a container there, so long as you kept everything "tasteful." I wouldn't hide it right on top of someone's grave, but perhaps in vegetation in or surrounding the cemetary itself. The multicache idea that the federation mentioned is also a good way to do it - cachers could still enjoy the cemetary, and see all the old headstones, but not have to disturb anything while they were there. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  14. How about Westside Regional? I haven't been out there in a while, so it may not need trashing out, but its a nice spot for caching and get-togethers. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  15. quote:Originally posted by EraSeek:I think somebody got home and pushed a button. I'm getting all my stuff now. Me too - I saw the logs on five of my caches last night, but didn't get the e-mail notifications until about 11 o'clock this morning. At least they did get sent though. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  16. I'm not sure about your first question, but in regards to the second, I'd say he was trying to post a note, but didn't click on the "make a note" radio button. The type of information that the owner gave in those two logs sounds like updates/maintenance reports, which are usually logged as notes. Whether the owner just forgot to make them notes, didn't know about that option, etc, that would be my guess as to what happened. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  17. Ah, okay. That makes sense. I hadn't even thought of that being a possibility. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  18. I noticed that too, and the only difference I saw was the use of caps - "MOPAR" versus "Mopar." I didn't realize that usernames were case sensitive, but perhaps they are... ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  19. Glad to hear your trip went well, and that all of the advice was helpful. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  20. "A strawberry milkshake would be good right now... maybe some fries, too." ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  21. Looks pretty good infosponge! If I'm ever heading down to Tampa, I'll have to remember to check it out before I go. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  22. 'Captain, I'm detecting alien life forms 125 decimeters to our right." ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  23. I named a website! Cool! ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  24. quote:Originally posted by Natureboy1376:the "Strached Cd Micro" !!!! That was your microcache?! I hate to say it, but I ran that over about a week and a half ago... There wasn't much I could do - the rush of air from the car in front of me flipped it up and into my path, and the next thing I heard was the sound of your 'Scratched CD Micro' becoming the 'CD Crushed into 500 Pieces Micro'. I'm sure sorry about damaging the cache... guess you'd better update the name of it. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
  25. Alright! You're Gainesville bound! For the Gainesville area, one of the nicest places to cache (in my opinion) is Paynes Prarie, which currently is home to two caches. The Federation's little cache on the prarie is a pretty good one, as is Rocky Shoals' Kache-N-Karry. The prarie itself is part of a state park (you can find more info from the link I gave earlier), and is home to quite a bit of wildlife. On a hike in the park a couple of months ago, I saw a large flock of turkey and three white tail deer within five minutes of stepping out of my car. I also have to plug my own Where's Adam West? cache. Its a virtual, but you'll probably never see anything else like it. Plus you might see some alligators nearby. ---- When in doubt, poke it with a stick.
