  1. One of my TB's was dropped into the event page for Geowoodstock 9. The Littlest Ninjas Kuji-kiri TB3M9BG. What happens to a TB once it goes into the pile at GW? Am I to assume that this TB has gone on to TB heaven and needs to be memorialized in Snoogan's TB Graveyard, or will it actually move on to its mission?

Oh speak to me wizened ones.

in an ideal world someone will have picked it up and will move to a new cache soon, correctly logging all movements....however this often doesnt happen. we had a bug went AWOL after being dropped in an in event in Minnesota. Many people 'discovered'it, but it was still in the itinery long after the event. I contacted the people who dropped it there, and they said someone must have taken it, as it wasnt left behind. it was a case of wait and see... But the happy ending is, that it has just turned up 4 months later. someone found it in another cache, and has kindly 'grabbed it'

so give it time. it may turn up somewhere. give it a year before you write it off forever!

  2. I know everyone is free to play the game in the way that they choose....but am I the only one who finds dipping thru 30, 40, 50 caches annoying? I will dip a bug thru a cache if I move it to another city, or help it achieve part of it's goal (visit state welcome centers, etc) but dipping it thru 25 micros on a power trail seems kinda silly to me and clutters up the log when you want to look at the travels of the bug. Just my opinion. Thoughts?

yep I agree! when you want to read the TB's log page...its just full of boring dips! cant see the point really. why not just dip it in the last one?

Its quite nice to dip a bug in a special kind of cache and take a foto of it there. that has more meaning and shows it was really there!

like the top of a mountain,or famous place or Icon etccc

  3. As in, everybody (or almost everybody!). That's just simply part of the game. If you really don't have the extra minute to sign the log then it's best to log a DNF as you haven't really "found" the cache.

But I did find it, there it is in my hands in the pic i uploaded

    Yes, you "found" it!

    So I did find it?

according to your definition so you can note in your notebook that it was a find, but the geocaching.com game is all about marking the log book. It's artificial, but the whole game is artificial.

Good job it's just a game then ... as you say.

I wouldn't be very happy if everyone logged my caches by saying that they couldn't be bothered to open the container, then compounded the insult by cluttering up my inbox with photos!

But ...but ... i take lovely picture!

Thing is, I have another life other than caching (as much as I wished I didn't)

And when I have say: 3 hours free to do a trail, but spend far longer than expected trying to find a cache (I don't like giving up you see, I like to 'FIND' them.)

Then i see I am quickly running out of time .... but i can't just jump back in the Jeep (because I'm half way round the trail) so I run to the next cache and on finding it (or not, according to you) I take a picture!

This is the way I play the game.

    I don't armchair cache,

    I don't log a find if I didn't find,

    I'm geocaching MY way!

Feel free to delete any of my logs if I didn't sign the log ... oh and delete my lovely pictures too

(If I'm ever round your way caching)

so these people dont have time to sign the log, but have time to photograph each one, upload the pictures, resize, and insert them in each log...?

  4. I'm planning to do this coin, funny and meaningful, that inspired me the world of geocoins, world that grows and develops like a living being, as a universe around us.

    thealembic.jpg

Maybe I will make two versions, one in Shiny Copper and one in Shiny Nickel, in pastel color, and the worlds/coins in various sizes and color.

    Opinions are welcome.

cute! and unusual, we like :)

  5. You can no longer place alternative logging requirements on geocaches. That means you can't require someone to wear a silly hat, sing show tunes to a passing muggle, etc. You can request that people do these things but they are under no obligation to comply.

Edit to add that restricting who can be FTF kinda cheapens the FTF for whoever gets it. It's like saying "I won the foot race!" when the other guy had his shoe laces tied together.

we kind of agree with this,,

we were the FTF of a restricted FTF cache. it was our very first, FTF.

we had all the excitement and adrenalin buzz of rushing to the site, finding the cache and signing the brand new log...and then it was kind of like... oh.. where is everyone else?? it seemed as if we had been given a head start in a race, and therefore not really a winner

  6. if you do come along to any of the social events we will buy you a beer!!

Cool! I'm up for a beer. :) About time we had event out East. I'll spread the word. When's it happening?? :D

sounds a good idea. any idea for a venue? a pub meet? or a BBQ in the park type of event?

  7. Hi, i've just moved to Auckland from the UK, i did caching there with my best friends foxmartspot and am finding that although i still enjoy it, it's not nearly as fun on my own..... any one wanting a caching partner??

look out for events that happen fairly regularly in Auckland or nearby cities. they're extremely sociable and you may hook up with others in the same situation.

  8. With all due respect M&J I DID NOT remove your logs. Why would I?

Anyway, I think this matter has gone on long enough. Maybe one day we will meet and have a laugh over this storm in a geocache container.

Well our logged find did disappear for sometime, but hey-ho as we said we are not bothered by things like this and if you do come along to any of the social events we will buy you a beer!!

It's a great idea if done properly, why don't you put it back but make it clear that it is a dummy? maybe crank up the difficulty, change the hint to not under a rock and make a card that clearly says you haven't found it?

  9.

So now after a couple of silly comments in the logs the cache owner has removed the dummy in order to try keep everyone happy.

What do you mean by this? which silly comments. None of them seem silly, detrimental or negative.

  10. So a few weeks ago a cache was published and as it turns out it made clever use of a dummy container. Now I see the dummy has been removed so I contacted the cache owner to ask why. Apparently a few people failed to see the sense of humour behind the idea of putting this little spin on what is now an average traditional cache.

The hint was,"It's NOT under the rock." At GZ there was a suspicious looking rock so naturally you turn it over and sure enough there's a container. "That was easy..." Open it up to find a note saying something along the lines of,"Told you it's NOT under the rock... but you're close." A few meters away is where the true cache is hidden.

To me, I liked the idea and it put a new spin on things but at the same time it got me thinking. Are there any rules on "Dummy" containers and what are other people's opinions on them???

we found this cache a few weeks ago. listed as a regular. the clue actually said 'dont let this one rock you' which made us think it was either under, or disguised as a rock. and sure enough, at the givne coordinates , under a rock we found an official geo cache container.inside was what seemed to be a muggle info sheet folded up and no log book. we signed the paper, and mentioned this in out log later. the owner then deleted our log, saying we hadnt found the real cache and the 'joke was on us'. sorry we didnt even notice there was a joke.(and neither did some other cachers) we were just out to find regular caches that day.

we wondered about cache saturation, as the 'real' cache was hidden just a few meters away apparantly?.

anyway- it wasnt clear to us at all that we hadnt found the real cache. maybe the owner should have written on it 'not an offcial geo cache' or made it clear on a tag inside that we had to find the next one. other decoy caches mention in the description 'make sure you sign the real log' etc..so the joke was lost on us Im afraid!

Time to add my penny's worth as the cache owner. The cache was listed as regular. Which it was. The clue was "Don't let this one rock you." This was designed to guide you away from the rock, but I guessed that most searchers would look there first. About a metre away from GZ (who is that accurate anyway?) there was a rock. Under it was a cache container. Inside the container was a sheet, which M&J did not read, which stated

    "Actually - I’m sorry - you haven’t found Gosford 01.

    Remember the clue was:-

“Don’t be rocked by this one.”

    But you are close!!! :)

Please put this back and cover it so the next geocacher can join in the fun."

This took up about one third of an A4 page. M&J signed the back of the sheet, as did one other Geocacher. I am completely mystified why / how they did not read / see my note.

Previous Geocachers did, and enjoyed my SOH.

Also, as a matter of interest, I don't think cache saturation comes in to it - what they found was not an official Geocache.

And, notwithstanding what M&J said above, I have not deleted their log - well not on here anyway. And I did not say the joke was on them - I did make a comment that they did not share my sense of humour. When I took the dummy cache away I took my note as well, which they had signed. I still have it if they want to see it : they could take up my offer I made some time ago to meet for a cup of coffee.

    Keep on Caching On.

just to clarify, for the record- we dont have problems with decoy caches, we just didnt realise this WAS one! it was listed as a traditional, 1.5 star difficulty, found at the given coords, under the hinted rock, in an official geocaching container, the large A4 sized paper was folded so that the only bit you could see said "Congratulations you have found it" followed by the normal muggle sheet spiel - why would you bother unfolding and reading the rest? Maybe it was the way someone else put it back but there was absolutely nothing to indicate that this wasn't the cache.

and YOU DID originally delete ours and another's log, and wrote your log explaining why you had done this. (these have now been reinstated since you removed your decoy). we then E mailed you asking for an explanation, and your reply ended (copy & pasted from your e mail)...

"As you will see from earlier posts other finders have appreciated my little joke. Sorry if it has backfired with you."

we were going to go back and complete the finding of the 'real cache',to get the smiley face, but then you reinstated our find, so was no need.

Decoy caches can be fun. we just missed that this was one. maybe if the container was marked 'NOT an official geo cache', and contained a small plain card (instead of a multi folded large piece of paper)saying so- and maybe if the clue had said 'NOT under a rock' and listed as a harder difficulty- etc..etc..we would have got the "joke".

At the end of the day we weren't that bothered, we certainly didn't ask for the dummy to be removed just suggested maybe it was made clearer that it wasn't actually the cache when found.

  12. Hey Guys,

I have a few people who want to start caching, but i would really like to take them to some other caches around which really have the wow factor..

Does anyone know of any, or know of anyone who plants some real goodones, that i maybe able to look at.

    Cheers

    Furbies..

if you do a search for the area in Auckland you are interested in, the list of geocaches comes up with a favourite rating. if people have voted for it its probably a good un! do you want quirky camo'd caches? or clever hides? or interesting/beautiful views?

WackyB or A N D Y has done some great caches just off the top of my head.. and here are some our personal favourites in Auk

    and kiwifamily

purchased not long ago from trademe.

local company at Onehunga site here http://www.dangerousmagnets.co.nz/

They had been good and the magnets are very good.

seem to be same company. got a pack from trade me and theyre on thier way to us now!..

thnaks for the info.... just need a job lot of Eclipse tins now, and a magnetising-we-wil-go!!

    ;)

  14. Lee Valley Tools <leevalley.com> in various locations in Canada, handle 'rare earth magnets' in a variety of sizes and shapes. I believe they ship internationally; but if you can wait until Feb 6th, We'll be in Auckland, and would consider bringing them to you - over a pint of 'whatever'. We'll be on an 18 day tour of NZ, and have already planned what geocaches to seek, near the various hotels and sites we're booked into. Sure looking forward to the trip, and a few caches.

    hey. that would be cool!

where are you planning on touring?

  15. So when I get an email that my T.B's have been picked up I've been sending a message to the user thanking them for picking it up. I know some geocachers don't like to move bugs so I really am appreciative when other's pick them up

thats nice! i also appreciate when some one moves and correctly logs any of my TB's, so now i include on the bugs webpage, in its description, a "thankyou to anyone who moves this bug along" message

  16. i just love their individuality. like they have thier own personalites. its great fun looking up the website and learning about their adventures, and then be able to participate.

we released our first one yesterday, and its already been picked up from the new cache, so we eagerly await the next update so see where its gone...
