  1. Thought it might be interesting to see if people have bits of equipment they always take caching with them. I try never to be without a trekking Pole as I find it almost indispensable when caching from helping me get up slippery slopes to prodding about in the undergrowth.

Does anyone else have a piece of kit they can’t cache without???

  2. Let us know how you get on with the GPS.

The weeekend before last I dropped my Etrex Summit and it has since kept switching itself off every few minutes. I sent it to their service dept last tuesday and havn't heard anything yet.

In the mean time I had a full weekend of caching in Wilthshere planned so I "had" to buy a basic Etrex that a chap I work with wanted. Once I get my summit back i'll sell him the etrex - second hand.

  4. I've been spending quite a lot of time looking at the OS site lately and read some very dull publications with huge formulas in them. The conclusion I have come to is that you won't find a map based on WGS84 of the UK....I could be wrong but here is what I think I have worked out.

A map is only an abstraction of the world, any map involves the conversion of 3d lumpy curved surface to a flat 2d surface. Now as the world isn't a completly flat sphere, map makers have to choose a curve to base their calculations from (technically known as an elipsoide). OS use an elipsode that matches the curve of the earth round the UK where as WGS84 uses slices that are more generalised for the whole of the earth.

Heights add another level of complexity as they are relative to a complex mathematical shape known as the Geoid for WGS84 but OS was originally based against Mean Sea level in Newlyn at cornwall. Aparentley sea level round the UK is below sea level - Go figure!

Conversion between the 2 systems is a non-trivial operation which in the case of OS to WGS84 involves Guessing the co-ords and iterating till it gets to the right answer.

So the upshot of all this is that a map made to WGS84 will look subtily different to one made to OS refs. I kind of think it unlikely that someone would remap the entire country, just for us GPS users.

Of course I could be wrong. If any surveyours are reading this - please be gentle.

I think this is the relevant bit...

The best surprise in the cache was to find a log from the park rangers saying that someone had picked up the cache and turned it in. The Ranger decided it was fine to be in the park and replaced it. Way to go BLM! They even put a free pass to visit the park and a t-shirt in as prizes. What more can we ask?! We'd have to rate this a great caching experience and we were glad to make it our centennial cache. Thanks for the hunt, Joedohn!

  7. We were up there today and had a bit of a domestic icon_wink.gif I thought we should take the camera and develop the pictures on to the web & send the originals to the cache owner by snail mail as the camera ran out over 3 months ago. But Maria pointed out that it was a bit rude to do so without checking with cache owner first..

So as "a mans place is in the wrong" we left it there erring on the side of caution.

    Alex,

Yup that is right - I wasn't sure whether to do this as a lot of them can be reached from more than one tube. Be grateful for opinions.

I was up amersham way today and noticed some more caches that can go on the map if you like a long walk. So I might redo the map with Green caches for close to station, yellow for within 2 miles and red for "I wouldn't walk that far but people do you know" soes that sound sensible?

  11. I use the Excel spreadsheet I have developed which allows me to lat/long (all formats) and convert to OSGB or vice versa. I can then key these in to easygps (a future version will do this automatically) and download them. Also it links to the OS site so you can print out a 1:50000 map of the area.

Mail me if you would like a copy (it's free).
