  1. What awfull news. We had the pleasure (and it really was a pleasure) of meeting Mark on two occasions. On the first he drove all the way down from the chilly north to run a fox hunt for us, he was completley happy to drive around Essex for the day having driven down to us for 9:00 in the morning. The second was on the children in need foxhunt where we sat and talked for a while and put the world to rights. He was a true gent who loved the game and spent an awfull lot of time and money trying to make it better. He will be sadly missed. Chris n Maria
  2. We have had a couple of ammo boxes let in water: The first was caused by a laminated "you've found it" sheet being trapped in the seals. The second was caused by the top of the box being sunbmerged under six inches or so of water and the box had been bent slightly so the seals didnt work. Always check the boxes you buy/use are not damaged around the seals. Chris
  3. Well done Peter - glad to see you getting out and about once in while. CnM
  4. for those of you stilll wondering why the Victorian postbox locationless cache was discontinued...I think I have an answer!!!. Strange. Chris
  5. Correct - its a well known fact that Java, PHP and all the other development technologies that are not produced by microsoft never run out of disk space - its a purly Microsoft problem...go figure. Chris
  6. i know of these: Country Walking Magazine TrackLogs Phils Walks and Walkweb Tracklogs seems the best IMHO. Chris
  7. Only legendary for logging more failed to finds than anyone ever felt possible Currently running at 46 not found logs - is this a new UK record ???
  8. For West coordinates you need to enter them as minus numbers. If you enter 52 17.064 -0 39.239 it calculates correctly - positive numbers are East. These are only really text in the listing, WW strips them out from a provided GPX file and will convert them to OS or if you view the cache on GC:UK site Teasle has created a filter that does the conversion on the fly - go to here and search for the cache then click on the waypoint...it should do the conversion there but its not working at the moment! Chris
  9. Change the GPS to Datum:- WGS84 and format:-H DDD MM.MMM and you should be able to enter them straight in. If you get a cable to connect to your PC you should be able to download using EasyGPS. Chris
  10. Strangly enough I found a cache in Penrith which had clear evidence of the tupperware box having been eaten by animals...no idea why as there was no food in it. Just thought I'd mention it as it doesn't really add anything to the argument either way. I suppose at the end of the day if the land-owner is happy for you to use plastic bags thats fine. Chris
  11. All Except the virts and those in Donegal. The only time we would not use ammo boxes is for Micros, as we still have quite a few ammo boxes left in the shed. Small Ammo cans arn't much different to tupperware in size just harder to get hold of. In my experience plastic bags seem to be more popular up north - but that could be just me. Chris
  12. It seems to me that condensation in the bags makes it much more likely for the cache to get wet. In my experience caches in bags are always damp and wet wheras those left out dry in hot weather. I've never know a box to pop open due to heat - I'm not sure Air expands that much ?? In practice most tupperware seems to remain perfectly watertight for a year or two (some degrades and becomes britle after a year or so) without placky bags which get holes in them really quickly. Generally we use Ammo boxes and have only had one wet cache which was a combination of a bent lid causing a busted seal and the cache being under 1 foot of water! HTH Chris
  13. Not all SSSIs are that fragile, we have a cache in a SSSI and the warden was very happy about it and was very surprised when we didn't bury it!! Managing many areas involves a lot of hacking and burning, for instance Epping Forest requires constant grazing to maintain the open areas, coppicing of trees, heavy equipment to dig out ponds and lay paths. Many other local SSSIs require similar. Management often means not "leave it as it is" more "hack it back to how it should be". In amongst all this slashing and burning an ammo box under a log is hardly going to damage things. local knowledge and getting permission is the way to go Chris
  14. Ahhh those were the days.... When 60 miles seemed like a new local cache...happy days
  15. Great Idea - I've just spent a productive lunchtime adding all our caches & adding the ratings link. Looks like a great resource. Chris
  16. In the past people got upset because the forum was filling up with loads of "come to my cache" type adverts which wernt very interesting if you lived nowhere near the cache. Eventually the moderators at the time decided on a no adverts rule. Generally people will see new caches on the weekly mail from GC.com - or you could advertise freely at GeocacheUK.com. There are now an awfull lot of caches planted every week, if each one had an advert topic there would be no room for all the "congrats on your 100" topics Chris
  17. You can get it here . Oh and it now imports mxf files as well Chris

  20. Statistically Rapes and murders are generally performed by someone known to the victiim so I recon you are better off staying in the woods away from your friends and family. The biggest risk is of an accident - so keep your phone handy and tell people where you are going. Chris
