  1. Can anyone advise me on the etiquette on for needs maintenance in caches? A friend told me it was common courtesy to not actually put it in the cache logs, because that was "calling out" the CO, so that is what I have followed because I wouldn't want it done to me. Instead if I found it, log it as found and then note the condition it was in if necessary and if it was just an issue of a full log, add more paper, etc to hold it over until the CO could get to it.

Last week a friend and I went out and I emailed two CO and both were receptive to my emails and responded in a positive manner. I later went out and found a cache which was strewn here and yonder and the container looked like it had been run over with a lawn mower. When I emailed the CO, I got a short response about not emailing them directly because it was "unsolicited" and to just log it and they'd get to it "eventually."

Honestly, I was a bit taken aback by this because I was trying to give them a head's up, but am I going about it the wrong way? Should I not be emailing the CO directly and instead just submit a log and be done with it? I've never had an issue where someone has responded negatively, but again, I'm still fairly new at the game. I just try to do as I would like to have done to me, and if something I put effort into getting out there needs fixed, I would want to know directly so I can get to it.

    Thanks folks!

Lot of different ways to play it. It's good that you're making an effort to alert the CO that there is an issue.

For myself, minor stuff I'll just include in the found log. More significant items, such as this busted container I'll usually file an NM. This is a courtesy not only for the CO but also for following cachers.

As for the CO's response...you can't please everybody, just try to do the right thing.

  2. I find all sorts of things offensive...but I don't feel I have a right to be protected from being offended. Such is life.

However, I do believe that family oriented activities ought to be able to remain family oriented and I also believe that certain 'things' are not appropriate for certain ages.

As for the cacher names in question, I can't comment without knowing the names. I might find some of the ones in question perfectly acceptable, in my subjective opinion.

  3. By the middle of page 4 I caught myself wishing for the very first time that I wish a thread would get locked...

    DL.jpg

and I thought the above after OP.

If the op has his way I am glad that I installed Better facebook. Doesn't anyone use ICQ anymore?

I prefer Alpacas to Llamas. It's because they don't remind me of Lorenzo Lamas.

  4. Do everyone a favor and DON'T take readings with an iphone!

I have used the last three models and they all work as accurately as my Oregon450 or my eTrex VistaHCx. The only difference I find is the refresh rate on the iPhone is slower than a handheld GPSr. I have placed at least ten caches with my iPhone3GS and I haven't had any complaints. I just keep using waypoint averaging for any cache I place.
Just because nobody's complained doesn't mean nobody's noticed. There's some hiders who I just expect the coords to be much further off than I'd expect to see from anyone else, and I just keep my mouth shut to keep the peace. I suspect if you were in my area, you'd be one of those people.

Since you think your phone works just fine because nobody's complained, maybe I should do cachers around here a favor and start fussing about lousy coords. When they come to me wondering what's up, I'll tell 'em to thank you. How's that sound?

I cache with an iPhone 4. My wife uses an iPhone 3gs.

I would NEVER use a 3gs to determine coordinates for a cache placement. I use an Oregon 450t.

  5. Dont you hate it when there are those one or two cachers that go out and place hundreds of geocaches, all IDENTICAL from the last? Here in Colorado Springs, there were lots of fantastic caches and lots of places to still be used for brilliant multis and puzzles to be placed, and now there are hardly any spaces available from a few cachers placing the typical "Camo Micro." Are there people that do this anywhere else? Does it annoy anyone else??

A few days ago I asked here why someone would want to place 100's of similar caches, as the log entries would be rather dull. The two best responses were that it was someone wanting to say they've placed XXX caches (numbers) and that people place what they like to find. I don't see the joy in placing 100's of identical caches as it seems the thrill would wear off after 20 or 30.

As for saturation, here are some comparable numbers:

Within 10 miles of Colorado Springs (on 5/26): 1846 caches

Within 10 miles of downtown Denver (6/15): 2412

Within 10 miles of my house (6/15): 2704

The highest density I'm aware of is a spot east of San Diego that has over 3000 caches within 10 miles.

  6. It wouldn't bother me a bit. My concern is the bored teenager playing with his new phone and loading a free geocaching app then deciding to grab or destroy that "cool thing" I placed by his house.

A basic member who can find a premium cache is not a bigger risk to my caches than a premium member.

Don't forget, I pay a price for my choice. I get less find notices because of the premium tag and I LIKE Finds on my caches.

It isn't a 'snob' thing, its just an unfortunate reality of placing 'cool' caches in my area.

  7. As I recall, you're the only cacher in your family. Which means family members could get bored waiting for you.

I'd suggest doing a cache on a route PQ that only shows caches within .2 miles of the highway, with no more than a 1.5\1.5 and have been found in the last seven days. You'll have near 100% success and won't keep family waiting. On a long trip you'll still have a large number of caches to choose from.

  8. Now I feel stupid, what if someone from my area comes on and sees my list of containers and me bragging about my cache?! :o :o

They'll think "Great!!, we finally got somebody new who puts out interesting caches instead of FC's under rocks!"

Puzzle cache freaks will be thrilled another another cacher is placing non-traditional caches. It's all good!

  9. From the logs:

Well done young Jacob, this was a most interesting cache, coordinates were perfect, containers were varied, lay out was good. You deserve a favorite point for this one.

Congratulations Jacob! I'm glad to see you haven't given up!

  10. The problem, as I see it, is not with premium only caches or premium memberships. It's with the elitist attitude that sometimes gets expressed.

I can't say I've ever noticed an elitist attitude I could attribute to a Premium membership. From those with more or different kind of experience? Sure.

It's all "Premium Envy" anyway. :-)

  11. How far away from the boundary do I need to be.

Sounds like you're asking the wrong people. That's a local question probably best directed to the area reviewer.

    On the subject...

Things have gotten a bit dicey for cache owners near Denver International Airport the last few months as well. This event happened in April.

Denver Police, three officers in SUV's, asked me to log a very important message for all cachers around the DIA area. After being detained, fingers laced behind head, legs spread, frisked, and ID checked, I explained geocaching to them; they said what with terrorists it isn't wise to be doing this kind of suspicious looking activity around an airport. They seemed particularly concerned about Irondale Rd (88th), 96th Ave, Quency, 112th Ave, and 114th Ave, so I will post this message on those caches on those roads. Also they wanted me to log that trespassing on DIA property is against the law. Live Wire 77 and I out finding 44 caches in the rural area north of DIA. My appreciation for the officers doing their job in a professional manner. Mice have made their home in and around the container, do not handle with bare hands. tftc sl

Since that event several caches that border the Airport property, but aren't on it, have been archived. I should note that the cache mentioned here was NOT on DIA property and that was confirmed.

Since DIA encompasses 54 square miles, that a lot of frontage road where it's unwise to place caches. Also, last year some (once county) roads near the airport got huge "Do Not Trespass" signs causing some caches to be archived as well.

  12. One question the OP asked still hasn't been addressed: The nice, small state of Florida has 4 Reviewers. Why in Gaia's name does a state the size of Texas only have one? It can't be for lack of willing bodies. There's not a week goes by when someone mentions they'd like the job. It can't be because Groundspeak thinks one is enough. How many Texas Reviewer complaints do we see in here as opposed to Georgia complaints, Montana complaints, etc? Can't help but wonder what the real reason is. Does PR have Signal's cousin locked away in a cellar somewhere, with threats to cook his legs if another Reviewer shows up? I know some frogs are territorial, but are Reviewers the same way? Inquiring minds want to know.

I saw in a thread once where a Texas reviewer threatened to quit if another reviewer was allowed in the State. I just thought that was a joke, but now I question it. You know that reviewer has to be in the "inner circle" of Groundspeak. From the looks of his reviewer page I would dare to guess that he is the Cult Leader of the Frogs. :anitongue:

As I recall, the last time the Texas Reviewer came up Keystone took at look at his 'backlog' and noted it was in line with other areas that have more reviewers.

I suspect much of the kvetching is little more than idle gossip that gets passed back and forth among a small group of vocal cachers.

  14. According to one poster upthread I don't cache enough, so it shouldn't be a problem.

If I follow your logic, that 'poster' (which you called a 'stalker' earlier) is me. My point was that you grab two caches a month and facebook integration saves you all of about 2 minutes of month. It seems a bit overblown, to put it mildly, to get so upset over something that has such little impact on your life. Same can be said about an iPad version of the Groundspeak app.

Regarding the Geocaching app...my theory, based on nothing but hope, is that the new database structure is a first step in allowing moving cache maps in a future app, ala Zillow. (The old database wasn't conducive to this feature.) If that is the case, then Groundspeak would be foolish to rebuild an app for the iPad when those resources could go toward developing the new version of the app.

If if my hope (pipe dream) isn't true, Groundspeak is making major changes coming such as an additional size option, and the addition of favorites in the PQ's. The official app will need to be adjusted for the new features, so development is continuing, but we won't see the results until August (based on the current announced schedule).

FWIW, based on your comments and usage I don't think you benefit much from a Premium membership or a paid app.

  15. Geocaching has made it abundantly clear, in the past, that once the APE Cache container has disappeared, the cache must be archived. To replace this one would be the ultimate hypocrisy.

Moun10bike is the cache owner. If he wishes to replace the cache, I believe he should have the option of replacing the cache...just as any other cacher would have.

Personally, I hope Moun10Bike chooses to replace the cache container. This is a historic cache that deserves to remain active. (Now if he replaces the container with a film canister, we reserve the right to kick his behind.) :)

  16. You've grabbed 11 caches in the last six months and Facebook integration is your primary concern?

    Stalk much?

    Deflect much?

I found your rather strong reaction to the lack of Facebook integration to be a bit odd. To better understand, I looked to see what about your caching would prompt that response. I was more puzzled after I looked as your two cache a month habit.

Since it takes less than a minute to post a link in Facebook, I'm a bit perplexed by the angst. A link would save you less than two minutes a month even if you posted every find. That is far less time than you've spent complaining about the lack of integration. It's probably less time than you spent writing your first post on the subject.

Frankly, Facebook integration seems rather immaterial at your level of usage...it isn't exactly a lifechanger.
