  1. This would be a wonderful category for documenting some wonderful old places of worship. Those still in use and those who's use has long gone by.
  2. Use Haversines. Convert to radians first. Bx = cos(lat2).cos(Δlong) By = cos(lat2).sin(Δlong) lat3 = atan2(sin(lat1) + sin(lat2), √((cos(lat1)+Bx)² + By²)) lon3 = lon1 + atan2(By, cos(lat1)+Bx) Δlong is the difference between the two longitudes Or you can just punch in the coordinates here: http://www.movable-type.co.uk/scripts/LatLong.html and hit the "Calculate Midpoint" button about 1/3 the way down the page.
  3. Then please be so kind to fire off a letter or email to someone back home to maintain your cache. Or temporarily disable your caches before being shipped out. There are solutions that do not involve abandoning caches just because you're shipped out. Maintenance is maintenance after all.
  4. May I suggest a second category for you, Treasure_Hunter? Infamous Graves. Graves of gangsters, Criminals, Dictators, Some Bad Actors, and Most Politicians (Louisiana's own Huey Long, for example).
  5. Category Proposal: Large Sculpture, "Yeah, But What Is It?" Statuary comes in all forms, people, things, dieties, and so on are all quite recognizable. However, sometimes you're just staring at something and you can't help but ask "Yeah, it's art, but what is it?" This category would be for those sculptures that defy description. The bigger the better. Given the preponderance of bizarre lawn art in the fronts of businesses, homes and other estates, I'm restricting this category to sculpture higher than 10 feet tall or larger than 30 feet across. I want to know that a major effort was put into place by some person or persons to set up something that defies description. Required Descriptors: Name (if applicable) Photos GPS location City, State location Accompanying text (if applicable, it will be on a nearby plaque or marker) Artist or Organization Date of Construction or Dedication Material Used (Bronze, cement, wood, mixed media, etc) What the locals call it (locals often have names that have nothing to do with what the artist intended) What you think it looks like (if you can answer this, it may not belong in this category )
  6. Category Proposal: Statues of Civil War Generals This may actually be best done as two sub-categories under a larger heading of Things>Statues>Civil War. As a resident of the great state of Louisiana, I would like to manage this category with the assistance of the a management group that is currently soliciting membership (four members so far). If it is decided that this could be done as two categories, I would like to head the managment of "Statues of Confederate Generals. I would then recommend that the management of the second group,"Statues of Union Generals", go to someone living in one of the original Northern states. However, if it is decided that one group manage statues from both sides of the war, then so be it; I volunteer as co-manager in my group. Category Specifics: Union or Confederate Name of General Dates of Service Participation in significant battles Born/Died dates and any additional biographical information Text on statue Date statue erected Who erected the statue (state or historical society, etc) GPS location of statue Street, City, State location Public or Private land (is it available for public viewing) Web info (if available)
  7. Category Proposal: Southern Antebellum Plantations I am currently putting together a mangagement group for this category. (four members in the group so far) These were the large landowner homes in pre-Civil War South. Situated on large tracts of agricultural land, all that remains now are a diminishing number of these once magnificent homes. Some of these homes have been maintained and even fully restored while others are sadly slipping into oblivion. It is my intent to document all known and little known Antebellum (pre-Civil War) plantations as Waymarks. Category Waymark information sought: GPS Location of the Plantation. City, State Location Name of Plantation Year Built (if available) Photo of Plantation and any nearby historical markers/plaques Name of any historical society managing the plantation Notes of any historical significance or notoriety (if available) Web link (if available)
  8. I asked for this category and it has been assigned to me as category manager. It is almost ready for release -- I just have to finish populating one of the drop down variables with the 64 parishes of Louisiana. I hope to finish this evening or tomorrow and then we are good to go! With the new group management feature that will be released soon, I would love to have "managment" help. Just drop me a line if interested... LSUMonica Yes, I'm very interested. Firing off email now...
  9. function MARKWELL( Thread of type Question) { return MARKWELL(Thread); }
  10. My head hurts... So if the universe is not infinite, but finite, it has boundaries and takes up space. What space is it taking up and wouldn't THAT be part of the universe? OW! OW! OW! OW! OW! OW! OW! OW! OW! OW! OW! OW! OW!
  11. If the cache is legally placed and cachers can get to and from the cache from two legal directions then what's the problem?
  12. Ok, I'm putting the group together now. I've sent out invitations to several prospective members. How do we get a charter?
  13. You won't see it now, but on the Waymarking Forums index, it lists the most recent posts and what I saw made me wonder: Had me wondering just what kind of Locationless category would have us hunting down Special Ed students.
  14. NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT! I'm refering this to the Minister of silly walks I can't seem to find the picture! Not that one, the one where they shake each other's ankles
  15. What do you mean expand? Non-rural. This little cemetery is nearly impossible to get to unless you're extreemly lost or you have business on the 2-block stretch of suburban street. Nobody I know knows this cemetery is there. Maybe a separate "Hidden Cemeteries" category would be needed.
  16. Question: Will poaching be allowed on category management? Example: Suppose the Hawaii Historical Marker category is open. I propose the category but I'm not in Hawaii. Then someone actually IN Hawaii proposes the same category. Who should get it?
  17. And what's that starburst covering? Hmmm... Near as I can tell, the plastic bag illustrates the different cuts of meat you get from cattle. The star is over a drawing of a side of beef. What we see is the inside of the bag, or the back of the front of the bag, if you will. Thus the lettering is backwards. I can make out "BEEF" easy enough. Other than that, I can make out "Tear Here" on the bag. The bag appears to be a plastic shopping bag of the sort you get at your grocery in the meat department. That's all I got.
  18. I cannot seem to search by nearest Earthcache to my house. At GC.com, I did it using a Pocket Query. How do I do it here? The search function seems to be far far FAR less than intuitive. (to me at least) editting to add: Let me add that I figured out that there is a "within 100 miles" feature on the search, however, that result is zero. So how do I find the nearest? Do I start filtering on zipcodes in other areas?
  19. I'm all for this one. However, would you like to expand on this? There's a teeny little cemetery in the middle of town, under an overpass, about which very few people know. I wonder who remembers anyone buried there?
  20. NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT! I'm refering this to the Minister of silly walks I can't seem to find the picture!
  21. Thanks, Geo. I didn't see Louisiana on the list of Historical Marker categories. I hope I did this right. I use two LHMs in my Earthcache and a third is used to validate a visit to the cache. It's a sneaky validation because the back of the marker is different than the front and it's not spelled out on any web page (according to Google).
  22. Ok, here's how it goes: 1) Approach each other with right hands outstretched in the traditional handshake fashion.(*see note below) 2) Plant your right foot within 24-inches of your fellow's right foot. This will be to the INSIDE of each other's right feet. 3) Tip forward extending your right hand past your fellow while extending your left leg out behind you. 4) Keep your left leg and back in a straight line as you pivot on your right hip socket only. 5) Just before you fall over completely, catch the outstretched left ankle of your fellow as he/she will undoubtedly will catch yours. 6) Shake each other's ankles vigorously. 7) Release is a simple matter of pushing off each other's ankles simultaneously. Sniffing during the shake is considered impolite. (*Note: Just before initiating stage 2, above, if your fellow is reaching for your hand, a muggle-style hand-shake will ensue)
  23. As a native Louisianian and current resident of the great state of Louisiana, I'd be proud to manage this category. Editting for Category Text: Louisiana's Historical Markers provide an educational experience to all passersby. Take a moment to capture a marker which commemorates our history as a French or Spanish colony, a famous plantation, a Native American or Cajun heritage site, or the location of some obscure fact that will enrich our experience as Lousianians.
