  1. Well at least we agree on something, ;)  I however can't see any difference.

Not looking to prolong this arguement but I really dislike not having the last word :P

I can see that you don't like what's been done in this thread but I don't see too many people rushing to agree with you.

If you want the last say then work away cos I don't think we'll ever agree on this one :P

  2. Why did farmers start wrapping the hay ,or is it straw ,in black poly ?

It's silage that they wrap in plastic (well here in Ireland anyway) and I assume it makes the bales easier to store (no need for a silage pit) and more portable. In Ireland it's a common sight to see them stored in the corner of a field usually with interesting slogans and designs painted on them to help deter theft....similar to spraying sheep ;)

  3. Does proper disposal not mean recycling?

A common fallacy among those who know no better is that all plastics are recyclable.

Coming from a Science background that label doesn't apply to me ;)

However, I was under the assumption that all silage wrap was recyclable. I was watching a farming report just this week that was bemoaning the fact that plastic collection from farms in Ireland had fallen drastically behind as the only company recycling the material has gotten itself into financial difficulties. Is it not possible that there is a recyclable alternative out there?

  4. Whatever....life's too short to worry about things discussed on the forum. As I said before the mods didn't get involved so I don't see why you feel the need to.

Thanks for publicising my cache. I would be miffed if the coords were published but if thats the way someone wants to find the coords then thats their problem. I'd just change the cache location. Its only a game after all

  5. Funny you should say that!  Just last night I lit a bonfire of well over three tonnes of silage wrap and other plastic sacking material such as a few hundred 1-tonne bags which fertiliser comes in and several thousand square feet of silage clamp tarp material.  The stuff is a menace if not properly disposed of, but it's a vital part of modern farming practice at our latitudes.

Does proper disposal not mean recycling? You wouldn't get away with that here in Ireland and I thought we were behind the times

We're not allowed to burn anything in our backyards anymore....doesn't always stop it happening though :P:laughing:

  6. I took a photo and would like to share it here on the forums, I have tried a few time but cant get it to work. Please can some tell me how to do it.

Have you uploaded it to the internet at all? If you haven't then you need to. This site will allow you to do that if you don't have any personal webspace.

Once you upload the photo copy the URL that the site supplies you with and put it into the body of a post as follows:

    Make a new post

Click the IMG button above where you type your post

Paste the URL that you copied earlier

    Write whatever caption you want

Click submit to post (or preview to see what it looks like before you commit)

If that's too much for you in terms of technology then email me and I will give you an email address to send the photo to and I'll do it for you

  7. I think this thread has quite openly gave the answer to someones cache!!

Perhaps people should edit their logs to hide the obvious answers. Imagine it was your cache that the answers where advertised too, I don't think many of you would be happy??

Ah come on...it's hardly a difficult one to solve being a riddle that most schoolkids could solve. Chill out and relax

Lost It & Skippy and Pingu, I think your jokes are uncalled for on an open forum.

Jokes like that are best kept within private company, not for a site that has all types of people looking at it.

Don't get me wrong, I have told my fair share of sick jokes in my time, but I have always chosen the company in which I share them.

As I said chill out.....I hardly think they were offensive. If they were the moderators would have been on the case pretty quickly and they haven't.

They give me a bit of a giggle and I can think of no better way to honour a comedian than making a joke about them

  8. I think I can guess which logs the Jolly Green Giants have seen recently which may have prompted this thread.  I have my theories about this person, but of course I am far too polite to post them here!

I wish someone would put me out of my misery and point me in the direction of said log

  9. The topic is not due to receiving negative feed back on my own logs. -

I have been tracking other logs and have found that occasionally, their logs have had an unpleasant undertone in the way they were written.

Okay...I was wondering how you could be upset by what those logs had said

  10. Why do people have to use the logs to be rude about The cachers hiding places?

Which log are you talking about? I've just been scanning the most recent logs on your caches and don't see anything rude. Some slightly sarky comments about the trail to the cache but if you think they're rude you need to grow a thicker skin

  11. You should also bear in mind that the version of GPX Sonar that works with Spoiler Sync only runs on Pocket PC 2003. Worth checking if you are buying second hand.

    Good point. :P

I seem to remember a discussion a while ago about purchasing a CD upgrade to 2003 a few months ago and IIRC the cost was about $35 approx. Still worth bearing in mind though as it all adds to the cost.

  12. I've just obtained permission from a landowner to place my first cache. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions as to what to put in it (1 litre).

Raid your local pound shop/bargain store and pick a selection of interesting items. It's always worth putting in fun stuff for kids which are usually nice and cheap :P

The best advice is probably to put in stuff that you have found/spotted in other caches and liked.

When placing a cache I always like to put in a FTF certificate and a special FTF prize. I've used official GC.com merchandise, mini-Maglites, GC.com mini-caches and unactivated TBs as FTF prizes but not everyone is prepared to spend that kind of cash.

It's also worthwhile leaving space in the cache. If you stuff it full then finders may not be able to put in bigger swaps than you have or have space for TBs.

  13. If you have the landowner's permission and follow the GC.com guidelines (and check out the GAGB guidelines) then your cache should be approved no problem.

Even if it isn't approved straight away for some reason, then the approvers will usually email you to check/change something and once you do that then it'll get approved.

Unlike planning permission it's not just a blunt NO! that you get :P

  14. GASK works on your PC and yes GPX Sonar is for a PDA.

GPX Sonar only runs on a PDA using Windows Mobile (otherwise known as a Pocket PC).

Active Sync is a program that sits on your PC and allows the Pocket PC to synchronise with the PC and backup/update your email/calander/task list/etc.

If you intend to purchase a Palm OS PDA then I think Cachemate is the alternative to GPXSonar.

  15. How many caches do you come acrosss that actually have spoiler photos? Around me, I don't know of any.

I've only had to resort to a spoiler photo once and of course I didn't have it downloaded and was in an area where it was impossible to get mobile reception to retrieve it. I had to log a DNF and that cache has bugged me ever since. I have it on my watchlist and it's been found loads of times since :P

Of course it's 213km from home so I can't go and try again too easily :P

  16. I think this part of the post says different to your opinion.

destroyed evidence after he gave up. When we got home we found out that the cache had gone so are logging our photo as a find.

So to sum up, They GAVE UP, went home and found it was MISSING and are logging the PHOTO as their FIND.

    Missed that bit so apologies.

Did actually see the other log and then decided to read the cache page and spotted what SP noted above.

Some day I'll learn to look before I leap (especially when out geocaching)

  17. I read that as they did find the cache but took ages logging it as they had lost the photo. When they got home they found out that the cache had gone *after* their visit.

As to the photo IMO it was good thinking to avoid having to climb back down again to read the clue (see mobiles are a good idea). The photo is a spoiler but she says that in the log and you don't have to click and see the photo. Don't see the problem myself :P

  18. Is the getting there the point, it looks like it requires a boat! If every cache was judged by what the ground is like at the cache site; then most would not reach beyond 3 stars.

I understand the ratings as follows:

Difficulty - finding the actual cache once you've reached the location

Terrain - getting to the general cache location.

For example a cache placed at the top of a mountain under the summit cairn would be a Difficulty 1* and a Terrain 5* possibly. That's what I meant when I said the 3* was okay (difficulty) but the 4* should be a 5* (terrain) as it requires a boat and a difficult landing.

  19. Being pedantic I'd say the 3* is correct, but maybe the 4* should be a 5*.

After all getting there is the very difficult part whereas the cache is probably fairly easy to find.

If the cache is as difficult as a 3* to find I think I'd be massively disappointed to get there and then have to log a DNF !!! :)
