Things > Benchmarks
Similar to UK Trigpoints this would cover traditional Triangulation pillars and OS markers (not GPS stations) as used on the island of Ireland by both OSNI and OSI.
The waypoints would require logging verification involving a photo of the marker and a GPS.
A full list of primary and secondary Trigs are available online giving Irish Grid coords so a photo is definitely required.

I'm confused
Are we able to add new categories or not?
I don't see the point in proposing a category if the process isn't up and running yet
-
It may just be me but...
I keep seeing Children in Need adverts on the BBC and they keep reminding me of the man whos dedication perminantly linked the event with fox hunts in my mind.
I am of course talking about Mark (The Cat) who did so much for caching in this country.
His legacy lives on in GC:UK and for that I think we all have a lot to than him for.
I haven't been around GC that long so I have no idea who you are on about. Can anyone give a little bit of detail on this obviously very well respected man and the "Fox Hunt" thing

SpoilerSync looks for the text 'spoiler' in the photo description.
Only photos with that text are download for use on a PDA.
You can disable that setting so that it downloads all photos.
I'm not sure if that includes photos in logs though?

As far as I am aware I have not let a Holiday Cache fly free in Ireland for some time, and if one has crept past it needs addressing.
One got through and you've sorted it so thanks.

My pleasure....glad to hear it worked
Just be careful that you don't run up a huge mobile bill when you're playing around with your new geeky toy
-
Two great links but have you seen their postage costs!!!!!!!
£5 in the UK is bad enough but £10.57 for NI is taking the piss!
-
...like many other geocachers in this area I have simply placed the caches into Camo Bags, works a treat and saves so much time.
I've never seen the Camo bags as they tend not to be used over here. What kind of material are they made from? I assume they're not waterproof or else we're back to the placcie bags arguement again
-
I like the idea that when there is more than 3 of somthing, boomarks or TB for a cache, that it provides a link to a new page.
Agreed, much neater and tidier now

Saw a similar one recently
out: the emergency wistlein: nothing, sorry
It's obvious the cacher knew they were doing the wrong thing and I can't see what attraction the whistle held. I'm sure most people carry cash on them. It's a bit of a lame swap (unless they're either substantial or unusual) but better than a sorry!
Feel sorry for folks with demanding kids but why go out caching unprepared for swaps. That's not fair either on the kids or the cache owner.

Wow, didn't expect so many responses. I think I'll try the duct tape option next time and maybe the primer/sanding preparation technique before painting on another and see which is best ie. fastest
Cheers guys

I've tried a couple of different techniques to paint plastic boxes but I'm looking for a few pointers. So far I have:
1. Painted the box with standard hard gloss and varnished over the GC.com sticky label. This has worked well but it's messy and time-consuming. Also the paint takes ages to dry.
2. Sprayed the box with spray paint designed for spraying cars (in a small touch-up can from a car spares shop). Looks great, dries quickly and it's speedy. Only thing is it has a tendency to flake off and I've no idea how well it'll last "in the wild".
Anybody got any tips they've developed?

The old "Make yourself so obvious that nobody sees you" trick. Works a treat

Give Orange a ring
Or try here first. Info for the UK is so much easier to find online than for Ireland
-
Try this link. I used that as a starting point to get my iPAQ 3870 working with a Sony Ericsson mobile. I did have to contact Vodafone for the correct parameters to use when connecting via GPRS though.
Give Orange a ring and they should be able to give you the following info:
Number to dial (make sure it's for GPRS)
Username
Password
Also ask them if a specific APN is required
It's not as difficult as it seems. Once you have the correct info. I found it more difficult to set up the Bluetooth connection

Apologies - I was referring to the averaging of the GPS readings - not quite the same. How do you do an average with coords? So was I. What other readings should we be averaging?
I'm getting confused now. I think it's time I went to bed
-
Thanks. I've never been able to get a straight answer to that before so I thought it was a lot more complicated. At least I know now (and can stop farting!)
-
I think the problem for some cache setters is severalfold:.......... failure to average;
I repeat my query from above. How do you do an average with coords?
Or is it just a simple add them up and divide by the number of coords?
-
Taking a straightforward average of all 74 valid logs made by the geocaching community
I've seen this mentioned a few times and heard people talk about it loads of times but nobody has been able to give me a straight answer. So, here goes again
How do you obtain an average when using coords? A worked example would be great
-
Not sure if this is what you mean but I output a file from GSAK as a .gpx file and then point Spoiler Sync at that. I don't automate it but instead use it to harvest any spoiler photos for specific hunts.
-
Wasn't there some kind of security warning to do with Greasemonkey a while back? I don't use it myself but it rings a bell?
-
ok that iz good too
B.
OK another master class is needed
how do you do that?
Its an animated gif which is just a fancy way of saying an image that moves. Deego probably saw it somewhere on the net, saved it to his own PC and linked to it in the usual way.
It's a lot more simple than it looks
-
Make sure they are formatted correctly though. I tried this a while back and it took a bit of fiddling.
Category Proposal: Passive Gps Stations Ireland
in Recruitment and Category Proposals Archive (Read-Only)
Posted
Things > Benchmarks
Similar to my earlier proposal this category would cover Passive GPS Stations which are not Trig points as these are already covered.
Once again a full list is available online so photographic verification would be required to create and log a waymark.
