I am planning an orienteering event this June (hopefully 5th).

I was wondering if I plot the controls/checkpoints with my GPS would people be interested in doing the course by waypoint with or without a map instead of the traditional style of orienteering?

This event in the recreational catagory allows competitors to use GPS to find the checkpoints. You find as many as possible on foot in a 24 or 12 hour period. The event is in Nova Scotia Canada. The following is the email I received with more details of the event.

Outdoor Enthusiasts:

 

While we continue to enjoy our Nova Scotia winter, spring is not far away and the 6th annual Eco-Endurance Challenge (E2C 2005).

 

For past E2C participants, by now your feet have healed, and the fatigue of 24-hours fighting through the bush is forgotten.  You are probably even thinking, "hey, that was a lot of fun".  In 2004, 64 teams took to the woods for a day of fun.  The Search and Rescue Team 'Lost Again' took the highest point score of all categories with Team 'Element' taking the highest point score for the 24-hour public competitive category.

 

For those individuals who have never taken part in a ROGAINE or are thinking of entering an adventure race, the E2C is the perfect way to get your feet wet into the sport.  For seasoned adventure racers, the E2C is the first race of the season and a chance to get out and test out the new equipment and prepare for the summer adventure racing season. 

 

The E2C is a major fundraiser for Halifax Regional Search and Rescue allowing it to continue to provide emergency assistance to outdoor enthusiasts 365 days of the year. This year we have expanded the E2C to include a pledge/sponsorship route for participants.  Teams wishing to get sponsored by donations and raise a minimum of $150 per person will have their registration fees waived ($75 per person) and have a chance to win a shopping spree at a local sports store.  Charitable receipts will be issued for all donations $10 and over.  The winning team will be the team who visits at least 10 checkpoints and raises the most funds per person.  Pledge sheets can be obtained by contacting Kelvin King, Meet Director.

March 1st, 2005 - early registration ends

 

April 1st, 2005 - registration ends

 

April 30 - May 1, 2005 - two days of fun (E2C 2005)

Search and Rescue - 8 and 24 hour (2 to 5 members)

 

Public Competitive - 8 and 24 hour (2 members)

 

Recreational - 8 and 24 hour (2 to 5 members)
