  1. Help us other dummies out here.... how did you get it to work? Configure the COM1 port properly?
  2. Now THAT's what I was looking for! Guess you gotta look around the program when you download it. I searched the pitiful Google Earth Help and found nothing about that. Was that always there? Or was it part af an update....?? Thanks Bill!!!!!
  3. Click Here ->> About Google Earth KML Lower right corner of your Accounts page. Edit to add pic.
  4. I forgot about FizzyCalc which used to come with GPSBabel called GeoCalc (I think). Anyway, since Google Earth accepts copy/pasted GC coordinates for a "fly to" going the other way for me it's just easier to do the math. Fewer steps, less clutter.
  5. I haven't found a way to change the format in google earth to match GC. Somebody might chime in with one. Or, maybe a mass e-mail to the programmers from all geocachers! Conversion is rather simple tho. GE to GC GE - 41° 09' 43.95" Just use the Microsoft calculator (or any protable one) and divide the 43.95 seconds by 60 to get 0.7325 which you round up to .733 - the coordinates for GC are then 41° 09.733' GC to GE GC - 41° 09.733' Calculator again only this time is multiply the .733 decimal by 60 to get GE 41° 09' 43.98" Google Earth does accept the GC format N 41 09.733 W 080 44.493 for input and it will fly to those coordinates, but down below it will show the 09'43.98 if you put the cursor on the point.
  6. If you mean can the "Board of Trade" have an account, by all means! The best way to do that is to create an account (it's free unless you need premium) and have someone volunteeer to be the "contact" person for the group. I would guess that would be you. You would just need to create an account with the username the name of the board (maybe Bay of Fundy) and use "the contact person's" e-mail address for the account. Elsewise, use your current account (but I don't think the "Board" will be finding any caches?). Either way, follow briansnat's post for how to list....
  7. If your boots are giving you blisters, they are not fitted properly. In most cases the blisters are caused from friction that is created when your foot is slipping in the boot, having wet feet (from cotton sox) can also cuase blisters. No, any and all boots do that. I hate boots. It's the way I walk + the weird configuration of my feet and that's not gonna change. I would have to pay to have custom boots made. I have broken both feet (navicular bones) and have "duck feet" according to my podiatrist. edit for typo and embellishment
  8. Lots of links. Shift Click on each below to open a new window and read. Welcome to the madness. Geocaching University Pocket PC GPX Sonar
  9. Though I am with you about boots as they give me blisters on my ankles and shins plus I don't like the feel, I add to the emphasis that you need to try on whatever you plan to buy. Here's my story: I wore Merrell high tops (not boots, just 3/4 style) because they fit like my own skin. Nothing better. Grip. You could "feel" the terrain which lessened your chances of slippage. Waterproof. Then, while riding my quad on the Black Trails at Hatfield McCoy's in WV, what you see in the picture happened. I had to ride three hours in the roughest country at Hatfields back to the truck. Doctor said "minimal displacement" and it was casted for six weeks. BUT! After that "minimal displacement" Merrell shoes no longer fit like they used to. Just that minimal change in my foot geometry displaced my pinkie metatarsal and the Merrel's gave be a big honking painful callous at the base of my pinkie. I tried all sorts of remedies, grinding it off, cutting it off with a razor, pumice stone.... nothing worked. One day with the Merrells and it was back with a vengeance. Off I limped to Mikey's Army navy who I know had a good selection and where I had bought all my Merrells. Tried on 20 hitops.... When I put on a Hi-tec 44100 it was heaven. Been happy since. O, and I wear full blown AlpineStar motocross boots now on the quad. They are like wearing a cast, but you are not hiking per se... and I sure won't miss 6 weeks of action again....
  10. I was at the Harbor Freight store yesterday and found these (click here & here). Pretty good for the price, but only if you have a store near you. Do an eBay search for Geocaching -> Click here
  11. eBay on a budget.... Stick one Stick Two
  12. I neglected to mention that I'm running a Dell Axim x5 with Windows 2003. If your axim has only Windows 2002 you can get the upgrade to 2003 on eBay (Click here) for two bucks. edit for typo
  13. By all means go. Not all cachers are like Vinny & Sue or briansnat..... actually just a few of them. And those are anit-social so they won't be there anyway! Will Rogers said once: I haven't yet met a cacher I don't like.... (or something like that).
  14. I like GPX Sonar because of its Field Notes feature and the automatic "Time Stamp" feature and grab & drop TBs. Even though I don't use GSAK, one can export the notes to GSAK. I use a Magellan and can export Magellan Meridian waypoints to SD cards when I go caching with my Team who also have Magellans. It's here: http://home.comcast.net/~fabienroyer/
  15. Ummm, call me Howard Hughes (or Howie Mandel for that matter) but I ALWAYS have a pen with me. I don't use the pen at the drugstore to sign the waiver, I use my own. How many sick people have stopped by there to get drugs? I also press the keys on ATM's with it, and press the buttons at the checkout DEBIT swiper with it. I really HATE stores (like Target) that force you to use their pen to sign off on credit or even debit. I use my own pen to sign credit slips at the restaurant. I've always got at least one pen with me at all times geocaching or not. Mostly it's a mini G2 Gel pen (4 for $4 at WallyWorld). Short, writes great, clicker so you can push buttons with it retracted, fits in your pocket real nice. But, no, I'm not OCD or anything like that - I ride quads, geocache, canoe, fish - lots of stuff that gets you dirty. My wife gets 2-3 colds a year. I MIGHT get one. I think it works. 16. In the upper LEFT corner of this forum screen you will see: "Logged in as: obnoxiousblue (log out)". Click on obnoxiousblue and you'll go right to it. Or, set up your Favorites to have a link to http://www.geocaching.com/my/ , log in and click on your stats rectangle upper right.
  17. +1 on Dell Axim. I've dropped my x5 a few times & no problems. Very bright screen. Runs GPXsonar or GPXView just fine. That's all I need. If you have an iPod and you are interested in getting into this real cheap, I have written a few Windows XP scripts to help with GeoCaching. One will take a GPX file and convert it to iPod Notes. A few other bonuses in the Zip file. One is a COMPARE script that will compare up to ten GPX files and create a GPX file of only the waypoints that ALL of the GPX files have or just at least a pair of waypoints. This is useful if you want to go caching in a group and want to narrow down the search to caches that everyone (or at least two) in the group has NOT found yet. Just click below. http://www.rattlebars.com/GC_2iPod/ http://www.rattlebars.com/GC_2iPod/GC_2iPod.zip
  18. Does your GPS have a GOTO WAYPOINT NEAREST function? Or maybe I'm missing that you need the detailed maps for driving and your GPS doesn't have them. After finding a cache, I always just hit the GOTO button and sort the possible user waypoint destinations by NEAREST TO CURRENT POSTITION.
  19. For quickies.... easy to grab, always ready. For longer days our team uses these. Plenty of storage + water as shown. We found backpacks to be cumbersome.
  20. If you are not seeing the view below, then there may not be a bug on the page. In this list I have clicked "caches from your home coordinates (filter out finds)" so there are no checkmarks, but bugs show and premium only caches show with a little guy. On maps, caches you have found show with a smiley, ones you own show with a star and others show with a "cache box." I do not believe I have ever seen bugs or checkmarks on the maps, only on the list as shown. NOTE: Many things on the GC website are not written with the best clarity. At the top of the list of poorly written items are the "Guidelines" and I suspect these to which you refer are as well. The main advantages of Premium are Pocket Queries, Caches along a route, and Notifications. Others will correct me if I'm wrong and that's ok.
  21. Under the map on the web page are "links" that will change the view of the map. You may or may not get what you like, but you can zoom in pretty good to get street names etc.
  22. +1 on the pride angle (Vietnam vet here). Next time tell him I'm with him 100% Seems to me like you met a real sweet cacher.... creepy. For us, we often use these "fisherman's vests" to keep things separated, but sometimes rather than rooting through a bunch of stuff in one place, with these, you might forget what's in which pocket! Choose your poison.
  23. Ahh... give a man a fish and feed him for one day. Teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime. On your "acccounts" page upper right.
  24. You didn't really say how old the kids are. My grandson goes with me for setting and getting caches from time to time, but I only get to see him a coupla times a month. I have set up an account for him and have logged most of his "back" caches. He's logged his own since. However, right now he's more interested in being on You Tube -> <- I would suggest they have their own account if they are at least in grade school.
