What exciting things do your add to TFTC on a mindless LP hide?
Well, you could say "quick and easy grab" or something like that, plus TFTC. I don't expect a story, but a few words are nice. When I do lame P&G's I will write more if it was difficult to get due to muggles or just something acknowledging the cache. It is nice to have feedback on my caches and when they don't say anything except TFTC I assume they don't like to write, have done too many caches to write more than one word, or are just in it for numbers. I am in it for the adventures and will leave more than one word, no matter how lame. But that's just me

I find that really annoying as well. Someone did 4 of my caches yesterday and the log was all the same - it said "-wolfpack" yeah ok, so did you like the caches? Were they too boring for you? Did you take or leave anything? Anything? Hello? Not even TFTC. Whatever. I went to see other caches he did and he signed those logs the same way so I guess I shouldn't take it personally. There are some jackasses out there.

What's the fun in logging finds you didn't find? I find that kind of dumb, but hey, at least there are some of us that play by the rules. Today there was someone that says they found my cache but didn't post anything! Nothing! Not even a smiley face
Then I checked their other finds they logged in the same park as mine and they wrote comments. They also only have 8 finds, but even so, not make one stinking comment or TFTC? Makes me think they didn't find it at all.

Why are there still so many people who worries about what others do? As long as they don't destroy caches I'm ok with cheating

I am a Geocacher and I don't want to be associated with that kind of lowball standard - that's why I care.
Agreed. What is the sense in geocaching if you don't really find the caches? Makes no sense to me. I play by the rules and if I want "payment" for helping at an event, I'll take payment in words such as "thank you for your help."

I had a troll TB that went from NH to FL to Denmark, back to FL and back to Denmark a few times. It was last seen in Denmark but went missing not long ago. Although I know this happens, I enjoyed watching the trips it made. Unfortunately, I could not communicate with the last person that put it in a cache because they spoke no English

I try not to get annoyed when my TBs go mia, but I do because someone out there has them. They don't just disappear. Ok if you stop caching and still have them, be kind enough to put them in a nearby cache or send them to the owner. We all know life happens, but come on, be courteous enough to at least drop them in the mail or a cache. You can't tell me that there is not a few minutes that can not be spared to do this. Grrr...and yes, I know you can't do anything about it, but some of us enjoy seeing our TBs travel. That's the whole point, isn't it?

I usually give the one that placed my TB the benefit of the doubt and just send an email to see if perhaps they placed it in a different cache. They usually reply and it's not hostile by any means. I'm not upset or anything, but I just want to be sure to mark the item missing so no one else thinks they are finding a TB in that cache. I think it's fun to send out TBs to see where they go, and if they don't come back, well, that's just the way it is. No harm done (except for a cache being muggled of course).

Love the idea and will stock up on my swag to bring with me. I have only visited about 4 or 5 caches with good swag and all from the same cache owner; the rest is stuff I'd throw away if I found it in my house...one card from a deck,used McDonald's toy, used toy car, used pencils, leaves, used toys toys toys....all junk. I always bring decent items to trade but never trade because there is nothng I would want. Don't forget that us big kids like swag too! It makes it a little more fun

I too have noticed a severe lack of trackables in caches where they are supposed to be. I've begun posting a note on the TB/coin page to let the owner know it's missing from the cache. Some people mark the TB/coin missing and some people have actually thanked me for posting a note. That has led to some pleasant emailing back and forth so it was worth doing for that reason alone. After reading some other threads here, I think I will start noting that some TB's are missing on the cache page so maybe the cache owner will mark them missing if they clearly are. I had not known the cache owner could do that until I read it here.
I have had the same experience. I've emailed lots of TB owners about not seeing their TB in caches I've found and they were happy someone let them know. I have my own TBs out there and 3 are gone, missing in the world...one in Denmark. That's a bummer but one TB of mine I noticed hadn't been moved in almost 2 years, so I checked the cache that it was supposedly in. It was a Beanie Baby Glow Worm. I posted a note to ask if the next person to log the cache noticed it there. The owner quickly replied to me and told me his cache was a bison tube and no TB would fit in it. I was mad! I promptly emailed the cacher that dropped it there and he replied that the cache had been muggled he thought....I replied that the cache was a bison tube, way too small to fit my TB in....needless to say he never replied to me. I don't like it when people are thoughtless like that. So I followed up with releasing a new TB: a Sherlock Holmes Troll doll and its mission is to go out into the world to search for my missing TBs. Yes, that is just a little humor but what else could I do?

Back in 2005 my husband mentioned he heard about geocaching and tried to explain it to me. We only did 5 caches that year...guess we didn't get hooked at that point. In fact we didn't cache again until 4 years later! Shame on us.
For the past 2 years we've gone a lot more and look forward to caching hikes, trails, rr tracks, p&g's, and everything in between. -
how is anyone going to find it?!
Someday a Geocacher will stop their car behind yours at a traffic light, and your Bug will get logged. Or they'll spot it at a park, and know there's another cacher around. Your car may not get a lot of Travel Bug "discovers", but it's a fun way to let people know about your hobby, and you may even interest new people in it.
I have a magnet TB on the back of my car. Only 2 people have discovered it so far. I have thought about taking it off but maybe one of these days someone will discover it (maybe at a geocaching event?). I'll leave it for now.

I feel your pain!!!! I had one of those travel bugs - his name was Jeffrey, named after my brother, and he was a wishnik (troll). Jeffrey traveled from NH to FL, then went to Sweden, over 13,000 miles from home! He traveled across the Atlantic a couple times. Just recently it was reported in a cache that he was missing. I am so bummed!
He was the best TB I had. Unfortunately I can't post anything to the cache he was supposed to be in because it's all in Swedish language. So I know how you feel. And I can tell you that many caches are muggled and people take TB's, never to be seen again Just keep on putting TB's out. I'm getting a new wishnik soon to travel again. Don't give up. -
We have some ammo cans out off trails. One is hidden in a rock wall. My favorite one I hid I saw this flat rock and it was kind of like a cave. I've seen some in between rocks or under large rocks too.

Just a quick question - suppose I'm going to place a cache and I have the area picked out. I hide it and it gets published. What if there's a mystery cache (that I haven't done, so I don't know the coordinates) that is almost next to my hide? Does the reviewer know this? What happens in these cases when we are not aware of this? Do we just move it if someone should let us know?

I actually won't be placing the new cache right where the archived one was, so I think I'm good there. There is another cache that has not been found in a long time but not archived yet. That one I think I'll keep the .1 distance and hide it really well.

Easy after you've done a bunch. I don't mind them because sometimes we're out of town and you can always count on one at Walmart no matter where you are. If my daughter is with us we quietly figure out which post it's at and race to see who gets it first. I wonder if anyone has witnessed our crazy antics

I get a bit annoyed when I see "TFTC" or "TNLN TFTC" on my ammo cans I work hard on - I always put good swag in each ammo can. I always have a story; even for those lame caches. But I appreciate the cachers that take a little time and effort to write a little something. It is exciting to read their story on how they got to it or what happened during their search, but if I only see copy & pasted logs I just delete the emails that notify me and don't bother reading on.
All I can say is, thank you to all those cachers that place excellent hides/larger than nano hides and put effort & quality in caches, and thank you to the cachers that write more than an acronym

Looking at the gps every 10 seconds to make sure I was in the right spot, never realizing that caches are usually up to 25 feet away from that spot.
When I first started I would continuously stare at the numbers while walking, not taking in any scenery or observing my surrounding. That's probably why I fell so many times

I find that really annoying! Sometimes I'll see on some of my hides "catching up on logs" and that's all they say! Well, geez, thank you for even finding my cache - hope you liked it
If I didn't log my finds the same day as I found them, I'd tend to forget the story of how I found it and I probably wouldn't care. That's why I log them as soon as I get home from caching. To me, logging it in is part of the fun. Why bother if it's been many months!

Happy New Year to all! My question is, is there a rule about placing a cache where (near) a cache was archived or not in service? There has been a cache that was archived where I was thinking of placing a new one, but there is also another cache close by that has been placed as temporarily unavailable...so there are 2 caches in the same area that have not been maintained for a good amount of time. I emailed the cache owners over 3 months ago to ask if they would mind if I placed caches there, but there has not been a reply. I would love to place 2 caches in this area soon. Any cacher that knows my caches knows that I maintain my caches very well. What are thoughts on this?

For the actual log you write in at cache site, I generally write a few things so I don't take up a lot of space in their log. But when I get home, my husband says I write a book sometimes, but I write a lot more than "TFTC" or "Found it" like some people do. I put a lot of thought into what I want to write and I always find positive things to say or sometimes a funny thing that happened while going for the cache. I like it when other cachers post stories for my caches and not just 2 or 3 words. My husband thinks I'm being annoying by posting a "story" but I believe people (hopefully) enjoy reading them.

When I hide a cache, I know the name I am giving it and write that on it, but not the GC code. However, when I go back to check on the cache as regular maintenance, I then write the GC code on it.

These stories are great! Ok, here's mine:
Last year while out caching, we picked up a geocoin from a cache. Generally we only hold onto them for a short time. I usually keep them in one place but since this was our first coin, we kept admiring it. I remember showing it to the kids and then I put it on the counter (normally I put them in our geocaching backpack). Bad move on my part.
The next weekend we went caching and planned to drop this coin in one of the caches. OMG! Where is the coin?! I blamed the kids first and they swore they didn't touch it and I was the last one seen holding it. Then I blamed my husband but he said he never saw it in the first place after we left the cache we retrieved it from. This was not good.
I was terrified of the thought of emailing the owner of this coin that I lost it. Should I buy a new one for him? Should I lie and drop it in a cache? No, that is just wrong. We tore the house apart looking for this thing to no avail. I decided to just keep looking for it and hopefully find it before long.
Four months went by and it was still bothering me....I should really clear my conscience but dang, I know I put it on the counter! Another month went by and I decided that after I bring up the Christmas decorations from the basement, I'll email the coin owner.
I went to the basement to start bringing the plastic bins up and had to move boxes out of the way that were on the floor in front of the racks with the Christmas decorations. What? What's this on the floor? OMG! It's the COIN!!! Holy cow! How did it get down here behind boxes?!
It was our cat, Tiva. She steals everything and plays with them. She will grab something (like the geocoin in its plastic sleeve) and run off in the house with it. I picked up the coin, which was still in the plastic sleeve, and examined it. There were two little bite marks where she had it in her mouth.
So she had taken it to the basement, batted it around down there for awhile until it got wedged under a box!
I immediately ran upstairs yelling I found it! I found it! Jim! After a good laugh and sigh of relief, we went to a cache and dropped it off.
Yes, I emailed the coin owner and told him the story and we both had a good laugh.
* Note to self: just put the TBs in the caching bag so the cat doesn't steal them.

My wife and I have been geocaching for a few months now. We generally look for the bigger caches, because micros just aren't as fun. But it seems like the longer a cache stands, the more people just leave absolute junk in the place of cool things. It's really frustrating to see caches full of water bottle caps, rubber bands, pennies, etc when you can tell from logs and the initial cache contents listing that these were not the types of items originally left. One of the rules of geocaching is to leave something of equal or greater value and I know this isn't the case. We didn't spend very much money coming up with a decent sized goodie bag of prizes to leave in geocaches, so it really is just a matter of sheer laziness. It's like people are just grabbing junk from their floorboards to put in caches. We've found ourselves lately just cleaning out the junk in caches and throwing it away and replacing it with good stuff for the next finders, but I hope it's not in vein. I hope we can get a few more people interested in "CIJO" Cache-In, Junk Out. We only have two caches set up right now, but I plan on periodically checking in on all my caches and removing stuff that doesn't belong. I might get sick of doing this constantly, but it really isn't fair for everyone else. </endrant>
I totally agree with you. That is one of my pet peeves too. We've been caching since 2005 and have noticed the same thing. We find so many ammo cans with junk....I mean, something nobody would want...but unfortunately there is nothing you can do about it. When we go caching now, we don't bring anything to trade because we know we'll find McDonald's toys or total junk. We just sign the log and that's it. However, there are a couple cachers I know that have cool caches with decent swag. We know to bring something cool to swap if we know it's our friend's cache. Also, when we put out caches, we put in quality swag, and our last ammo can we placed, we made it a rule to please not put any junk in our cache.
We remove junk from our ammo cans but unfortunately we can't stop it. I have also found that almost nobody trades items in our quality caches! We put some decent stuff (not expensive) in our caches and hardly anything has been touched. We, like yourself, want quality caches. But some will say it's not about what's in them; it's about the hunt. Yes, half true, but good swag would make the hunt even better.

I sprained my ankle while caching...hubby and I were at Margaritas a couple summers ago having a margarita. No plans to cache that day. On the way home we decided to do a few caches. Parked the jeep in the parking area and walked up this grassy hill towards the cache (a freakin micro in a tree branch no less). I decided that I'd wait in the car because the mosquitoes were bad, so I started to walk down the grassy hill, in my sandals. Slipped on the grass and my ankle turned and went under me and down I went. Hurt like heck and couldn't walk. Laughed about it and after hubby helped me into the jeep it was worse. He wanted to do another cache after. I didn't. He ended up taking me to the hospital for xrays.
Never go caching in sandals if you've had a margarita. Lesson learned.
I've also fallen while walking through the woods....not in sandals, but my shoelace caught a stick and I went down and couldn't get back up. Only to hear "wait, stay there, I have to take a picture!" Thanks, hubby
Always keep your laces tight.
