  1. I have a handful of those pins left. You can either get one that I placed in this cache a few days ago; Stone Sentinel (GCHK6K), or take the more difficult approach of contacting me with your address and I'll mail you a few! Regarding WiFi Spots, a GPX file would be sweet! However, before you make that information public you might also want to score some credit for your research by placing them in the Waymarking.com Category - "WiFi HotSpots". Cheers, PassingWind
  2. I have the same problem with my #1000 Finds Geocoin, I only have the option to "Write Note" or "Discovered It". Cannot move to another location......what's up with that? Help. PW
  3. What Makes A Coin Geocaching Related I believe basic Mendelian Genetics should provide the answer as to why and how they may be related. Genetic fingerprinting could just be the answer. The basic premise would be to access a unique sequence of base pairs from a coin and a geocaching related item or topic. As you may know reproduction brings the DNA of both items together randomly to create a unique combination of genetic material into a new coin, so the genetic material of a coin is derived from the genetic material of those two items. This genetic material is known as the nuclear genome of the coin, because it is found in the base metal. Comparing the DNA sequence of a coin to that of a geocaching related item or topic can show if one of them was derived, or related, from the other or not. Specific sequences are usually looked at to see if they were copied verbatim from one of the geocaching items or topics to a coin. If that was the case, then this proves that the genetic material from a coin was derived from that of a genuine geocaching related item or topic. Simple really. PassingWind

  11. As an example; here are some Guidelines for Geocaching in Minnesota When geocaching in Minnesota please familiarize yourself with the guidelines that some park systems have established: Anoka County Parks Physical geocaches are not permitted in Anoka County Parks. Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness Physical geocaches are not permitted in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Carver County Parks All geocaches in Carver County parks must be registered with the county. City of Champlin Parks All geocaches in the City of Champlin parks must be registered with the Parks and Public Works Department. City of Detroit Lakes Parks Geocaches are only permitted in GAR Park, Beaton park, and Long Lake Park. City of Duluth Parks You must notify the Duluth Parks and Recreation Department when you place a geocache in one of their parks. Minnesota DNR Controlled Lands Geocaching is prohibited on all Minnesota DNR land including, but not limited to: State Parks, Aquatic Management Areas, Scientific Natural Areas, and Wildlife Management Areas. National Parks Geocaching is prohibited in all National Parks. Ramsey County Parks All geocaches in Ramsey County parks must be registered with the county and there are limits on how many geocaches may be placed in each park. Superior National Forest Physical geocaches are allowed in the Superior National Forest but they must be registered at a Forest Service District Office before being placed. Three Rivers Park District All geocaches in Three Rivers Park District parks must be registered with their main office. Most city parks and all state parks, so where do you hold an event where you can place GC "legal" caches? Hence the movement towards "temp" caches at these MidWest events. To be honest with you the effort and quality of some of these temp caches probably outshines many GC caches! So imagine no cache placements in San Diego City Parks, County Parks, State Parks, etc. How would the SoCal cache density look then? Now I can understand why they drink so much beer up there !!! Maybe we need to start a Geocacher exchange program. PW
  12. I think the issues are being well debated in this thread. I like the analogy of someone trying to log every waypoint in a multi-cache but even that analogy fails when you consider that the waypoints in a multi also have to go thru a review process. Unfortunately, I just don't think the practice will end as long as the web site allows it. It should be the cache / event owners decision how they want to monitor multiple logs base on waypoints or "temp" event caches. Just like virtuals you must follow the owners requirements for logging to get one or more smiley's. Examples: Borrego Backcountry Linked Caches Borrego Backcountry Linked Caches Part 2
  13. I believe a lot of us are missing the big issue here. I'm going to have to agree with what the Midwest cachers are doing. Many of the Midwest states have severe restrictions on cache placements based on local and state laws (no cache placements in state parks, local parks, etc) along with organizational guidelines that assist in implementing proper geocaching etiquette. "Temporary" event cache placements are common and are sometimes the only caches found during a typical event, we're just lucky to have the access we have here in San Diego! Does geocaching.com have cacher rankings? NO, because it's a family oriented sport that isn't concerned about the #'s, but the experience!! For those of you who are obsessed with the numbers and find it necessary to beat your stats and "rules" down upon other cachers or organizations I suggest you might want to re-evaluate the reasons why you geocache and how your actions reflect upon yourself and how the community at a whole views you. If this is really about logging your "find", temporary or not, why can't someone log an event multiple times to record their "experience" for each of the unique caches that someone took time to place? With that questioned posed we have cachers spinning out a 50 to 100 cache find days and then precede to cut-and-paste the same comment into each cache they find, in my opinion I find this insulting to the cache owner. However, they have every right to log a find or their experiance however they see fit, that's what makes geocaching.com so interesting, each find is an individuals experiance recorded at that moment in time, some are better reading than others. As others have said, "San Diego has a great group of cachers" so lets work to keep it that way and not tarnish our image due to insignificant issues that truly come down to personal views. PW here are a couple of emails I go from the Wisconsin cachers --This message was sent through http://www.geocaching.com -- Hughescrew, In Wisconsin the way events are done are that there are many "temporary" caches created for the event. These caches are just as challenging, some more so, than regular caches. Some states establish temporary cahces and then tell you to log them on a regualr traditional cahce page. Each state handles events differently, and just like religion, there is no wrong answer. Your profile didn't say where you are from but I see that you have cached most recently in California; things may be done differently in CA than in Wisconsin, just as in other states. Keep in mind, this is a hobby and people play it different and for different reasons. Again -- there are no right or wrong answers. --This message was sent through http://www.geocaching.com -- I was at the event in Kewaskum and it took all day to find very cleverly hidden caches that were located in various locations throughout the town. Why do you care what my numbers or anyone else's are? We found these caches just like any others and I don't understand how that is "cheating" please explain your logic. Thank you. --This message was sent through http://www.geocaching.com -- They are logging the temp caches that were placed. Thats why you see so many people logging this.
  14. Put them ALL into one large ammo can and hike it up to the top of a mountain.....the new cache will be a "need a coin, take a coin, have a coin, leave a coin" cache. PassingWind

  17. JANKY (adjective) inferior quality; held in low social regard; old and delapidated; refers almost exclusively to inanimate material objects, not to people. We tried to pick up on these girls waiting for the bus, but I was holding a janky [ insert geocoin here] so we just got clowned instead.

  19. COOL! Congrats Just to clarify, I thought it stated that "Preference will be given to CITO event organizers and team leaders rather than individuals" and that all entrants must be "Representatives of a team or an organization with three or more members".

  22. WOW!! How cool! I just found out about this yesterday so in my hast I sent off an e-mail to them. I had a CITO event scheduled for Earth Day put because of the lack of volunteers I had to push it back to the 29th, maybe this offer will draw them in!! I just wish I would have found out about this earlier so I could have really put some thought into my message. Our upcoming CITO event will be our 4th event in the last year , so far we've worked with the National Forest Service and California Department of Transportation. I have my trash picker-uppers crossed! PassingWind The Great 78 CITO Attempt 1.5 - NOT Earth Day
