  1. Before I knew about geocaching.... I was walking back to my car in the Walmart parking lot and I heard a faint but desperate whisper coming from, of all places, the underside of a lightpole skirt. Lifting the skirt I saw a dirty film canister. It began whispering to me again, telling me of a cool hobby called geocaching. To my amazement, I found that I could communicate with the canister simply by gently whispering. It told me tales of mountain peaks and deep canyons. Cold rivers flowing through gorges. Desolate deserts and golden sunsets. Oceans lapping at sandy beaches. I was quite struck by all of this and when it asked if I could dry out his soggy logbook I could only nod in approval. As I was placing it back under the dusty skirt it declared "You are the Whisperer." When I got home I went to geocaching.com to register an account. The rest is history.
  2. The camping events I've attended included lots of sharing of food (BEER), potluck style. I always try to bring one thing to share thats unusual(BEER). Once it was boiled crawfish (with BEER), another time it was sushi (and BEER). Don't forget the ice (BEER).
  3. The simplest solution has already been eluded to. Use a simple fm transmitter from walmart, radio shack etc etc. They are low power, fcc sanctioned and pretty reliable. Connect it to am mp3 player or cd player and you can repeat an mp3 file (that you recorded) to provide coords in a multi. Most have a range good enough to drive to and receive the signal. I've done one and my Pops has one thats been live for years without problems. Pretty basic stuff and you don't have any regulatory crap to worry about.
  4. Most excellent post. You are awarded 15 Caching Karma points.
  5. Luna... You cannot trade travelbugs for geocoins. Period.
  6. As Paul Harvey would say.... "And now, the REST of the story" I noticed that the OP has a new cache that was archived due to a rules violation. Specifically, cache was hidden in a cemetery without permission. I also find it ironic that the cache page is a rant about too many rules. Pot, meet Kettle. Kettle meet Pot. Heres the cache in question
  7. Probably because there hasn't been a canopy large enough to cover the hundreds of square miles that compose area 51.
  8. It's impossibly to have a thread about "Non Christians" without it turning into a train wreck. Thats why it belongs in Off Topic. Perhaps if the focus from the beginning was something non religious it may fare better. By titling the thread "non-Christian", you are already baiting the hook and alienating "2.1 billion" people.
  9. My dad bought a Magellan explorist XL. The screen is much larger than any other handheld and it's easy to use. He loves it and has over 1300 finds. Pay no attention to the (soon to post) Garmin holding naysayers when they moan about Magellan products (most have never used a maggy). They are just as accurate and easy to use than Garmins are...if not more so.
  10. Actually..... Boobytrapped grow operations are quite rare. The El Dorado california sheriffs office posts that fewer than 1 in 200 grow operations have some sort of boobytrap. Unless you are seriously bushwhacking, it's not likely that you'll encounter a grow operation of any kind as they are usually well hidden and off the beaten track. You're probably in more danger from getting mugged in the woods....or stabbing yourself with a banned penknife in an ammocan.
  11. You call that a knife? I've always considered something like that as a fingernail grooming aid. I once cut my finger on an arrowhead in a cache. I suppose since arrowheads have a long history as deadly weapons, they should also be excluded from caches. Pencils are another dangerous cache item. They are considered weapons by most prisons and are a major cause of injury to children. A kid in my 4th grade class actually lost an eye due to a throw pencil in class. I also see assorted rocks in caches on occasion. In some countries, rocks are used to execute criminals. There should be a prohibition on rocks that are small enough to be thrown.
  12. My take is that they want to design a coin with a message that identifies their non Christian values instead of a religion free generic design. I'm not sure why Christian values were singled out. Would this leave Islamic, Wiccan, Buddhist and other religious themes in the mix for design consideration? If so, a pictorial collage of these alternate religions would be a fine design. To place a positive non Christian phrase on the coin would be difficult as the "do unto others" analogy pointed out. Is there a recognized graphic representing positive non Christian values that could be placed on the coin? Each religion has their own symbols but I don't know if there is one for "non Christian" folks other than maybe a cross with a red circle/line over it.
  13. El D is correct. The nekkid smokeout in the mudbaths is scheduled for the friday night meet and greet.
  14. Being somewhat of a vigilante, my response to stumbling upon an outdoor grow operation depends on the maturity of the suspect plants. Early in the season I'd mark a waypoint and continue on my caching adventure. In the fall, I'd snip off the tops of the plants thereby rendering them useless to the grower. Then I'd CITO the clippings. Problem solved without wasting tax dollars......
  15. An electrician for the city would say the same for electrical box caches and LPC's City groundskeepers would say the same for sprinkler caches. DOT employees would say the same for guardrail caches. I can do this all day........
  16. The process is not bypassed! As I understand it, reviewers routinely use the pocket queries, or something like it, to monitor the caches in his/her area. It can be a daunting task to try to monitor thousands of caches. It is likely that many are overlooked. Posting an SBA log only notifies the area's reviewers that their MAY be a problem with the cache. No process is bypassed. Posting an SBA log notifies the reviewer that a cache has serious problems above and beyond wet logs or a string of dnf's and the situation requires the cache to be archived. I can only think of very few problems that would warrant such a log. such issues include... Property owner stops you while you're searching and informs you that the cache was placed on private property without permission and has been removed. Cache is in a location that has been closed by legal authority. Posting a NM log indicates to the cache owner and the reviewer that a cache needs attention (the appropriate action). Once the reviewer looks into it they may or may not post a reviewer note and may or may not take further action depending on the owners response (or lack of response). Once a reviewer sees a NM log, they put it on a watchlist (or should) The process is most definitely bypassed by armchair reviewers. By taking it on upon yourself to cruise listings looking for problems, then taking aggressive action on that listing, you are acting as if you were a Groundspeak volunteer.
  17. My objection to armchair reviewers has nothing to do with my willingness (or unwillingness) to follow the rules, but is more an objection to wannabe reviewers taking things into their own hands. Groundspeak goes through their own process of identifying and vetting their volunteers, weeding out the wannabes and unqualified in the process. By practicing armchair reviewing, this process is bypassed. Like all undesirable aspects of the game, this practice should be discouraged before it becomes a tool for cache maggots and vengeful cachers. If not, the usefullness of valid SBA's become nil.
  18. If it isn't your cache and you've never tried to find it...Why would you stick your NOSE into someone else's BUSINESS. Cache cops. They remind me of hall monitors.....
  19. Additional logging requirements have long been known to SSA in my local area. I usually log them with a simple DPM and move on. IMO these caches should not be approved by TPTB unless they are listed as puzzle caches. Any other policy would lead to POG's. If you want to add an additional logging requirement to a traditional cache, you should PYHOYA and post it as a terracache or something. Then again, I could just be TOMA.
