This is correct. Searching in the region using Groundspeak's iPhone, Android, or Windows Phone 7 Geocaching app will result in the granting of a souvenir if a souvenir is active in that region at that time. State and country souvenirs remain active from the day they are activated, but Mega Event souvenirs are only active for the duration of the event.

Finding a cache in a state does award the souvenir for that state. The reason some cachers are getting souvenirs for states they haven't been to is because they have logged traveling caches that are presently in that state. This is a known issue that we will be correcting. Placing a cache does not grant souvenirs, only finding them.

Version 4.2.1 has been released to address some issues users were experiencing. Bug Fixes: * Fixed an issue that was causing the map to target the coast of Africa. * Fixed an issue that was causing cache attributes to not show up properly.

The Project APE Cache souvenir is presently only awarded for logging the Tunnel of Light APE Cache.

I'm happy to announce that the souvenirs for Massachusetts, Maryland, and Brandenburg have been released and retroactively granted!

New Features: * Added brand new full translations for German, French, Dutch, Japanese, and Czech. * Implemented full support for device’s locale. This ensures dates, times, and numbers respect the locale set for the device. * Support for iPhone 4’s retinal display. Most graphics have high-res versions used for iPhone 4. * When opening a Geocaching.com webpage within the app, you are now logged in automatically. * Set up fitting modes on map to track your position as you move. Bug Fixes: * Fixed the formatting of HTML descriptions so that images appear at the right size and the description fits on the screen well. * Fixed a few bugs in the pocket query system caused by various anomalies in GPX files. * Fixed a bug that prevented coord.info links from opening properly on all devices.

The opt-out functionality is not presently implemented.

There was a bug that released two souvenirs to people who hadn't earned them. When we fixed the issue, we removed the souvenirs that had been granted to people who hadn't earned them. They are still out there though, so you can find them in your travels!
