    Can someone explain the different standards for location coordinates? I have come across multiple standards that are used in various parts of the world or for different applications. If I travel in Europe do I need to be aware of a different standard if I am looking at their maps? Hope that makes sense

    Cache Items

    Thanks! I am new (1 cache found) and I left a ping pong ball. Ok thats a bit cheap but I took a pair of cheap dice so I thought that was ok. I took along several items not knowing what to expect so I could cover all bases. ANyways I wanted to know what the etiquette was for cache items but also wanted to get some interesting info at the same time. Thanks again!

    What is the nicest thing you have taken from a cache?

    What is the worst thing you have seen in a cache?

     

    What would you consider is the norm as far as cost of an item that you would leave in a cache?

    Thanks for the info. Is there another GPS unit with onboard geocaching functionality that handles these issues better? ie downloading all of theinfo from the GPX files.

     

    I assume that the character limitations are also tied to the memory limitation of the unit itself. That being said, how much memory does each gpx or loc file use?

    looks like I may have gotten the answer to my question but perhaps some of you could comment further. The sales person at Radiocity said that the Garmin maps are much more detailed. At least this is the case with the North American maps. He went as far as to say that the MEgellan Mapsend maps did not even show town names. SO I amlooking for some input here as it will influence my decision on which GPS to buy....

    Yes that does help actually. So long as London is a part of that calculation!

     

    It would have been so simple to throw more mem in that unit. I wonder if they will ever offer a memory upgrade where you can take your 60C in and get a larger memcard put in.

     

    Does anyone else have this type of info for different area in the world? I am going to France in the not too distant future and would require Paris and west to the coast ncl Brittany and Loire Valley and Normandy. Would this fit in 56 Meg?

     

    Actually since the Garmin maps are divided into map 'chunks' it would be neat if there was a database that showed the file size of the various chunks.

    Still deciding on what GPS to get. I would also like to have downloadable maps. Which company produces the most thorough maps? Magellans MapSend series or Garmins City select? European maps are also of great interest (in fact more so than North America) Please feel free to take into cosideration the price as it seems the Garmin packages are twice the price as Magellan.

    Also as an additional note, how much memory do these maps take. FOr instance how much of France or the UK could you get on the Garmin 60CS? I think is has 56Meg mem

    Well I am hoping to have a GPS by then and if I do I will be there. It will probably be my first time actually geocaching as I do not expect to get a GPS until mid March! Hopefully that is ok.

    I guess my thoughts around the external antenna is more for when I use the GPS in a car for navigation using the Magellan mapping software. I just assumed that when the GPS is in the car it would have a difficult time keeping a lock. Of course if this is not true please let me know.

     

    Also what exactly is a re-radiating antenna. IF I had to guess I would say it takes GPS signal and retransmits the signal on an attached transmitter. Is this correct?

    *some* Explorist 600 Info

    Just called LeBaron's regarding the Explorist 600 and the Magellan Rep happened to be there. Now I am just getting into Geocaching and am planning on buying my first GPS soon. Since I travel a lot I would also like a unit that does mapping so the 600 sounds quite interesting. I need something portable, large map memory, and I would like Goecache functionality built in.

     

    According to the rep:

     

    - it will not be released until mid-March timeframe.

    - He believes you can use standard AA batteries as an alternative to the rechargeable battery pack

    - PAtch antenna (no mention if it is more sensitive than the other explorists).

    - no external antenna connection

     

    That being said he has not seen one yet so this info may not be completely correct. THe external antenna issue could sway me to another unit. How does the Explorist series perform in a car? Can the explorist connect top a PDA, laptop, or LCD monitor?

     

    I am also considering the Garmin 60CS.
