  1. Use a morsecode generator that can put it into a MIDI file (like NAT Radio), it'd be smaller than any of those cypher-JPEG's used for other puzzle caches. And set the speed around 15-20 WPM at least (I was trained to 36+ via Koch method and have a hard time listening to anything below 10 - it doesn't trigger the reflexes). Jan
  2. And there are people who claim dog's aren't much use for geocaching ;-) Jan
  3. Just started geocaching ... so I don't know how it's like without snow Jan
  4. Yeah, the Windows screensaver version is wasting more of the CPU than using it to search. A 667MHz P3 (Coppermine CPU) is chewing down a work unit in 10 hours ... using Linux or FreeBSD. Jan
  5. I usually have 3-4 computers running SETI. It's the only one I found so far that supports anything other than Windoze (all my test systems run FreeBSD). They all use the same account. Added: And no, I will not transfer my points from the PostgreSQL team to any Geocaching team. Jan
  6. Look at this baby: MPIO FY400 I have the 1GB version, and it's not only a great MP3 player plus voice recorder, with the retractable USB2 it's also the jump drive that you most likely have on you when you just need it. Plus, it runs for about 10 hours on one NiMH AAA 750 mAh (which isn't used when operating as jump drive), so power consumption of memory can't be a problem here. It costs maybe $100 more than your average MP3 player though. Conclusion: Memory capacity in small form factors is available. Putting 1GB into a GPS unit might increase the street price by $100 ... but who cares if that means that you can load entire North America? Jan
  7. I am planning to upgrade from a Legend to a 60CS later this year (after the new Magellan units caused the price drop). What I'm worried about a bit is that it'll just get harder to "override" whatever the autorouting thinks is a good route. To make it clearer, I currently use MetroGuide v4 to plan my routes on the PC. And I usually fine-tune the generated route a bit. So I use "insert route section" until the route looks how I want it. Is this route-fine-tuning (on PC) possible with City Select & 60CS too? Jan
  8. Our first ever attempt to cache was Copperas Pond (GC6E82) during our Xmas-Escape. Even if we didn't find it, the hike was well worth it (wonderfull pond) and it was a perfect test for our new strap-on-spikes. Jan
  9. IMHO the Battery issue is a killer. Any device having a custom battery pack (replaceable with spare or not) reduces the ability to chose the best battery for the current job. And don't think that LiIon lasts forever. They do degrade, and they do so faster when running hot. They drain faster when cold and they simply stop working altogether at about -20C (-4F). Here's a good read about batteries: http://www.batteryuniversity.com/partone.htm Jan
  10. Here's another one (international): http://www.travelgis.com/geocode/Default.aspx Jan
  11. Modified version of Cache In Trash Out, called Move Trash Into Cache. Jan
  12. There is a difference between making jokes about what happened and making jokes about silly reactions to what happened. Nothing funny about an airplane crashing into a building, but asking tourists if they plan terrorist activities ... wait a second ... actually that's not funny either, considering that those guy's who think that's worth asking are the ones in charge for security. Jan
  13. Good thing I didn't have a GPS with me! The airports where one usually waits for his wife don't require a GPS to find them ... they have localizers, ADF's and all other sort's of well known radio signals one can use for homing in. Jan
  14. Do the darn title and sig work yet?
  15. My "jumpdrive" also plays and records MP3's, so I would have the option to "record" my log entry on the way back to the car ... unless it's a drive-through-cache Jan
  16. Hmmm, all eTrex Firmware versions I've seen have two digits after the decimal point, so you got 3.70? When did you purchase your unit? However, my Legend is about as old as the original posters. I have done several Firmware updates and never had any trouble other than when going from 2.5x to 3.something I lost all the custom settings (as promised in the release notes). The updates are IMHO worth the trouble. I forgot which version actually fixed my Legends map upload problems (threw comm-errors in full speed) or when they added that nifty battery type selector so that fresh charged NiMH's don't show up half-empty (or is that half-full?). Just make sure that you have a fresh set of batteries in the unit. An interrupted Firmware upload can seriously confuse it. Also, if you have MetroGuide, get that update as well. They finally fixed this annoying "route hides highway numbers" feature. Jan
