  1. Don't expect the GPS to take you to exactly the right place. When the display says zero, in reality you're probably within 30 feet and so it's best to put away the GPS and start looking and thinking. "Where would I hide something around here" is a good thought to keep in your head.
  2. You could place the name of the cypher required onto the cache page or hide it in the HTML code but real puzzle hounds will quickly try the usual suspects anyway.
  3. Changing the file format isn't going to help. Your problem is that the original .loc file contains only the minimal information required to find a cache. To download fully formatted gpx files containing the fulll cache description, hints, most recent logs etc you need to become a premium member.
  4. I have a puzzle cache that relies on this information not being readily available, time to archive I think. Thanks a bunch.
  5. This is not a social networking site. The friends feature is disabled by default so that those members who are unaware of or do not wish to use the facility are not placed in the position of having to choose between giving offence by rejecting an unwelcome friend request or accepting an unwelcome friend request in order not to give offence.
  6. The location of the main post office was used as the reference for road sign distances. Ok a few years ago but if the old central post office has closed and replaced by one in a less than central supermarket you may have a problem.
  7. Locating the empty place where a cache is going to be is no different to locating the empty place where a cache once was. Neither of them are finds due to the small matter of the log not being signed. The last "F" in "FTF" does after all stand for "Find" and your buddy didn't get one.
  8. Hmm, Fife labelled as banana republic, maybe not so wrong after all
  9. I don't think Scotland has 500 active cachers but that didn't stop the mega there achieving an attendance of 1300. Hold it and they will come.

There have been plenty of suggestions for "friends" functionality but none of them ever seem to get implemented. Perhaps we'll have to accept that the display of inaccurate find/hide counts is as good as it's going to get.
  11. In an area well populated with caches, if you find yourself saying "I can't believe there's not a cache there already", remember the following 1. The landowner may have already refused permission. 2. There may be a multi stage or final there already 3. There may be a puzzle there already Before investing any time in cache development, contact the local reviewer and ask them to confirm if the area is really available.
  12. How about adopting a policy of routinely locking this type of thread and pointing users to a sticky thread that explains why.
  13. It would make sense for the TB "pick up" and "drop off" processes to be symmetrical. BTW, it's best not to get too fond of trackables since they are usually destined to "dissappear" without trace.
  14. ...in which to keep the cash to pay for it.
  15. Clipboard, high visibility jacket, confident attitude, no one will pay any attention.
  16. "someone honestly equated not signing the log with commiting murder" Caching is not a matter of life and death, it's far more important than that.
  17. Unforunately some GPS units don't ignore the new data but instead consider it to be a format error. Users of those devices need to use the older format option.
  18. The has got to be one of the most family oriented activities I have ever come across so keep calm, don't react and record everything. If there's one thing judges hate it's other people trying to do their job for them.
  19. It's happened before, and the best thing to do is keep quiet since they only do this to it take pleasure from your reaction.
  20. You could create a new travel bug and log it in and out of a cache near your home (a.k.a "dipping") and then take it on holiday and leave it in a cache there. Doing this gets some nice mileage onto the bug right from the start. You could also give it the mission to come home. If you can it's worth checking the mission for any bugs that you pick up while you are still there because some don't want to be taken out of their home country.
  21. I'm a bit confused by this "Theory of Geocaching Evolution", I thought it came about by intelligent design.
  22. On any caches that you own the "A cache by xxxxx" text will still show your old name but you can edit it. If you own a large number of caches it can be a bit of a pain.
