This is Guinness a 7 year old Border Collie Qualified Lowland Search Dog and Scrumpy a 3month old Collie Springer Cross (Will be a qualified Lowland Search Dog When he is older!)

Re-log them with your new name mentioning your old name.
I was hoping that someone might say that!
Any other views?

I have changed my username from darylt to Berklshire SAR Dogs
I have only found 16 or so Caches....
...is it acceptable to relog these caches with a note about changing my username
or
...hard cheese, go find em again
or
...don't worry about it, after all its only 16!

I am looking to set a few caches in my area....
...I have found the locations, and am writing the clues and additional information as we speak.
I have taken a reading from 2 different GPS
The weather was clear and accuracy was good...
How many other readings to people take before publishing?
I have seen that it is suggested to take an average of the readings - Is this purely the middle figure between each reading?
Any other suggestions are welcomed!!

I must say that I am very disappointed by many of the comments in this topic. I would like to think that these cases are issolated incidents. It appears that Nick has done everything correctly, and quite rightly the dogs should be reported and dealt with appropriately.
Personally I feel that should a dog bite a person the owner should be put down, this is mainly because if a dog bites it tends to be poor controll or lack of training. However should the dog be threatened or provoked the provokee should be put down!
I have to keep deleting my text from here on as I am finding it difficult to say something without possibly offending some of the dog detesters on here. Please remember that there are a lot of good dogs out there with very responsible dog owners, we only tend to hear the worst from the "sick bad news culture" that we now live in.

Someone in the GPS forum has been trying to help me with this with no luck
Does anyone know of a UK supplier of a Serial to USB lead that definately works with Garmin GPS?

I'm sorry about that - I don't know what went wrong there. I've now made you a full member manually.

I don't believe you can Assign the USB adaptor a com port, the computer and operating system do that. I wouldn't change it from what it gets assigned, it may interefere with something else.
try this... unplug it from the computer (both of them) and go to device manager, if it is still shown... delete it. restart the computer, plug it back in, see what com port it is assigned, don't change it, try to use it where it is.
As someone else said, GSAK should use it regardless of which port (though you may have to tell GSAK which port to use)
While windows does let you reassign stuff, sometimes it doesn't play well with items after you have done it. of course sometimes it doesn't play well with them anyway... but that is beyond this.
I decided to start again, I re instsalled the lead to a new USB port, it is assigned COM 3, I downloaded GSAK, set up the GPS to the correct COM port etc.
Now I get an error message - Can't init COM3

Many thanks to barryhunter who has now managed to identify the likely source and access mechanism of the recent problems on the GAGB website. These have been dealt with so it should be safe to visit again.

What do people leave as their signature item?
I am looking for ideas for one for me!
Your avatar is crying out to be made into a Geocoin. Maybe you could get ones made out of wood which might be less expensive?
Nigel.
Do you know of anyone that does this other than geocoins.net ?
I have sent them an email

USB adaptors are not always assigned a specific com port, you need to see what comport it was assigned within Device Manager. Plugging into a different USB port often will get it assigned a different Com Port number as well. I've heard some people having their adapter getting assigned Com port 11! So, you need to determine if your adaptor was really assigned to Com 1 or not first.
Hmm, I have assigned it port 1....
On my desktop it got signed 17!
On here I think it was originally 3 but as I have changed it I can't be sure
-
I have made sure that everything is set to COM 1
I have made sure that Activ Sync dosent have the COM Settings enabled, and if it does its set to COM 3 anyway.
I have tried EasyGPS, GPSU and Garmin Web Updater.
Still no luck!

sounds like a jolly good idea to me
would love to learn about html, would be useful to pep up my profile page a bit
see you there all being well
I could definately be persuaded to come home for the day!!!
It may even be my first event!
Unless something local comes up between now and then

I had seen another post that said if you go to the device manager and look under either Ports (COM & LPT) or under Universal Serial Bus controllers, one of those areas will show you the com port assigned to your adapter. And then you also may need to match the baud rate settings between the foretrex and usb serial port.
Since you know it works serial on the desktop, try with the USB adapter on the desktop.
Tried matching the baud rate on both PCs, still No luck!!

I have just recieved a Garmin Foretrex 101, I have connected it to my PC using the Garmin lead and a Serial to USB Adapter.
I have run the .exe file that came with the cable, I have tried to reinstall the driver from device manager, I have tried COM1 - COM5
I have trieds tried firmwear updates, but the Garmin software can not find the GPS
I have tried GPS Utility, but the port times out.
Can anyone help please?
Update
I have managed to connect to my desktop PC using the serial lead only, I dont have a serial port on my laptop hence the nead for the Serial to USB lead.
The device manager says that it is working correctly on the laptop
Any ideas?

I leave a carabinier with a small compass and torch built in which is £1 from the £1 shop!
I leave them at chaches I really enjoyed, or occasionally use them as swaps.
I like that idea too!
-
I leave a Golem - but only if it's an exceptional cache
apologies for the huge picture...
Now that is cool!
-
I tried printing from Google Maps with no luck on the hybrid map, however the Microsoft Live site worked like a dream!
-
I leave wooden tokens from geocoins.net
http://geocoins.net/catalog/index.php?cPath=21_22
I've used three of their designs in the past and I really like them - plus its something different.
Ian
I saw one of these today, they do look very good!
-
I leave Packs of World Cup playing cards.
Well you wouldn't want to keep them thats for sure!!
-
Its up to the individual weather to use the hint or not. We try to find it without and in lots of times we do if not we use the clue if there is one.
Do it your way!! Kevin.
Thats what we did today, only used the Clue if we had trouble finding the Cache, or if people writing logs says it is difficult to find!
